 I want to thank everyone for resonding to my post and allaying some of my fears. I think JeffG has it right that we can get so nervous about this because we see so few people (or, more likely, no one)with braces of any kind, let alone with more obvious ones.

I'm leaning toward metal now that I've been reassured about their positives (cheaper, possibly smaller and more comfortable, maybe shorter treatment time, fun with colors, etc.) I probably will go for another consultation or two before moving forward. I may actually wait until after New Year's because I've realized that it might be a smart idea to fund a pre-tax health reimbursement account to pay for this.
