I'm not a dentist but I have done a lot of research on dentistry and also on how to become a dentist. I've learned a lot about the application process.

Admissions counselors like it when applicants have a lot of shadowing experience. I've read prospective students who have over two hundred hours of experience.

You should speak to local dentists and set up something to shadow them. I think they like it when you shadow several different dentists.

Also, never mention a specialty when you're going in for your interviews. From what I understand, this is like a kiss of death. Most dental schools are interested in training general practitioners--they don't really care about your specialty.

Volunteer work is very good. They like people willing to volunteer.

Having your orthodontist send in a letter may send a bad impression, especially if that's the school you're applying to. They may think that you're trying to "intimidate" them. However, it could also look very good. Regardless, I doubt your ortho would write one, anyway, as he doesn't know you very well.

Are you applying for next year? I certainly hope you've already submitted your application through AADSAS. Getting your application in early is very important.

I don't know what year you're in, but it's also important that you check the entrance requirements of all the schools you intend to apply to. They periodically change. Also, I believe it's suggested that you apply to 5-15 schools.

I believe the schools receive a list of all of the schools you have applied to, so it may be a bad idea to apply to all 55 schools. :>

Here's an excellent forum where you can find A LOT of extra information about the application process, the DAT, pre-dental coursework, dental school requirements, expectations and course work, et cetera: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/forumdisplay.php?f=55

Good luck.
