China Unicom Orders High-End SIMs
-----------------------------------------------------------
China’s No. 2 mobile network operator, China Unicom, intends to ramp up its CDMA network that uses subscriber identity module smart cards this year, hoping to reach 20 million subscribers by the end of 2003, according to a SIM card vendor. Unicom, which also runs a network using GSM wireless technology, has ordered 7.5 million high-end SIMs from French-based Oberthur Card Systems, the vendor announced today. Some of the SIMs will be used for the operator’s CDMA network customers and others for GSM customers. The fast-growing operator has a total of 64 million mobile phone customers, most on its GSM network, says Oberthur. But, since launching its network using CDMA wireless technology a year ago, the operator has signed up 7 million customers. Using a SIM card in their phones–called an UIM or user identity module–these CDMA customers can sign on or roam to GSM networks in China or other Asian countries, as well as in Europe and North and South America. They can also use their phones when in South Korea, which uses CDMA technology. And, plans call for allowing them to roam to CDMA networks in other countries. The 7.5 million SIM cards are to be delivered during the first half of 2003 and all will carry 32-kilobytes of electrically erasable programmable read-only memory. High-end SIMs like these have been uncommon in China. They will allow Unicom to offer several value-added services to GSM and CDMA customers issued the cards.
