ERG said the system rollout is scheduled for September 2002 with full implementation to be completed by January 2003. The contract was awarded by Vasttrafik AB, the entity responsible for public transport in the county of Vastra Gotaland. Vastra Gotaland comprises 49 local authorities, including Gothenburg, with a total population of 1.5 million. The Vasttrafik System manages 600,000 trips each day on 1,500 buses, 220 trams, 50 trains and 32 ferries. ERG said under its system, cardholders will be able to use their cards on all forms of transport including buses, trains, trams and ferries. "It is expected that 500,000 multi-application contact/contactless smart cards will be issued in the first three years of operation and that more than one million cards will be issued as the system expands," it said. The system will also be designed to enable further smart card applications to be added to the initial transit application as the contract includes an option for the Proton e-cash system. Proton is already licensed to a number of Swedish banks. ERG is a shareholder in Proton World International, the owner of the Proton smart card payment and security technology. Additional applications expected to be added include payments for parking, taxi and small value purchases such as food and drink, ERG said. Chief executive Peter Fogarty said ERG has supplied magnetic ticketing equipment and smart card systems in Sweden for more than 15 years. “The award of this contract to ERG, which follows an extensive evaluation process, further increases our recurring revenue from long-term projects and the footprint our systems have across Europe.” ERG is currently involved in the installation of a number of smart card-based AFC systems in European cities including Bordeaux, Cardiff, Grenoble, Manchester, Oslo and Rome. The group has won contracts totalling about $100 million since January 2001 At 1135 AEST, ERG shares were 2c higher at $1.22. [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
