Date Posted: 18:27:51 02/05/03 Wed By end-2003, the French smart card-based e-purse, Moneo, currently used by about 850,000 consumers at 80,000 grocery stores, should be available nationwide, according to its parent technology firm, BMS. As a result of buy-in from France’s major banks, the Moneo e-purse can be embedded into consumers’ existing credit cards in a program that could be critical to its uptake. Since the banks are shareholders in BMS, the SNCF railway authority and the Paris mayor’s office, the scope for Moneo’s acceptance is widened and cardholders can now use a PIN to recharge their cards at retailers, ticket booths or cinemas. ------------------------------------------------------------ Since anyone finding a lost Moneo card can use the cash it contains, a €100 (USD 107) storage limit is enforced, but the card obviates ID theft or privacy concerns in being anonymous.
