The acquisition was part of Northrop Grumman’s long-term plan to focus on the technologies likely to yield the greatest improvements in US national security capabilities. This strategy led Northrop Grumman to acquisitions in advanced sensors and electronics and information technology, while enhancing its existing capabilities in manned and unmanned aerial systems. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Northrop Grumman merged its existing information systems business with Logicon in 1998, retaining the Logicon name. This created an enterprise with nearly $1 billion in sales and more than 10,000 employees. Since that time, Northrop Grumman has acquired the following companies and successfully integrated them into Logicon: Inter-National Research Institute (INRI) (1998), DPC Technologies (1999), Comptek Federal Systems (2000), Federal Data Corporation (2000), Sterling Software’s Federal Systems Group (2000), Litton TASC (2001) and Litton PRC (2001). As part of a global branding initiative in 2001, Northrop Grumman renamed the Logicon sector, Northrop Grumman Information Technology. ----------------------------------------------------------- Visa says:" For loyalty programs Catuity, Logicon, Smart Dynamic and nCipher make up the team, and three different types of smart card readers are supplied by GemPlus." --------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.stockupticks.com/ -------------------------------------------------------------------- ![]() --------------------------------------------------------------------- In addition to IBM, Smart Chip’s major strategic partners are: Colony 101 of Europe, the international Solstice Alliance comprised of major suppliers of e-payment technology, Proton World, an issuer of over 35 million smart cards, and Transaction Software, Inc. --------------------------------------------------------------------- THE 'LOYALTY' MARKET --------------------------------------------------------------------- The U.S. Department of Transportation has a special team assembled to develop a chip-based identity card for 12-25 million transportation workers. --------------------------------------------------------------------- There are currently 175,000 smart cards in use in Washington DC’s transit system. On August 7, 2001 Minneapolis-based Target Corp. announced a fall 2002 launch of a co-branded Visa smart card program. Target will upgrade the POS terminals in all of its 990 retail stores to accept smart cards from its 37 million customers. The San Diego Padres and Master Card International recently began a well received smart card-based loyalty program for Padres fans. The entertainment industry has also weighed in on smart cards with music icon Michael Jackson recently issuing 250,000 loyalty program smart cards to fans for a fall 2001 promotion of his upcoming music release. Additional high profile smart card programs are being launched in Mexico, Brazil, China, Australia and other countries. By 2005, more than 500 million charge cards will migrate from magnetic stripe to smart card technology. --------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.erg.com.au/news/mediarel/mediadisplay.cfm?MediaRelease=216 --------------------------------------------------------------------- ERG Selected for Exclusive Negotiations for USA Regional Fare Collection Contract in Seattle --------------------------------------------------------------------- ERG is to provide a “seamless” smart card fare collection system initially to five, with an option to expand to seven, public transport agencies responsible for the region’s 2,000 buses and the commuter rail network and ferry systems. The project will use ERG’s highly successful MASS (multi-application smart card solution) technology to manage the integrated fare collection system. The contract being negotiated with ERG also includes the provision of card management and settlement services for ten years. --------------------------------------------------------------------- The seven public transport agencies deliver services to approximately 3.1 million residents in the four-county Central Puget Sound Region of Washington State, providing 130 million passenger trips per year and collecting more than US$160 million in annual passenger revenue. Additional functions such as toll collection, banking and electronic purse can be added to the smart card at a later stage. --------------------------------------------------------------------- The contract is expected to be signed in early 2002, with the first phase of implementation commencing in 2003. Once the system is fully implemented, it is anticipated that between 500,000 and 1 million smart cards will be issued. --------------------------------------------------------------------- ERG’s Chief Executive, Mr Peter Fogarty, said that ERG is very pleased to have reached this point in the procurement process for this major US contract. --------------------------------------------------------------------- “This is an important milestone for us because it provides further proof that ERG’s smart card technology has worldwide recognition as being the best in its field. --------------------------------------------------------------------- “This project in Seattle will enable us to leverage our existing San Francisco service bureau, which we set up to support our smart card fare collection project in the Bay Area. The central service bureau we have established in San Francisco will become the first in the world to process transactions for multiple cities. --------------------------------------------------------------------- “The addition of the Central Puget Sound project to our San Francisco and Ventura County (Los Angeles) projects will augment ERG’s growing presence in the US market.” --------------------------------------------------------------------- Services to be provided by ERG over the ten year operating contract include maintenance, cardholder support (call centre), card procurement and distribution, clearing house services, financial management, network management and revalue network support services. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Cardholders will have a variety of means to purchase and load value on their cards, including both agency and third party retail outlets (such as convenience stores), by mail or over the telephone, at ticket vending machines and through the Internet. The convenience of “Autopay” will also be provided, whereby cards can be automatically revalued through a pre-authorised charge to a credit card or bank account, without any need for the cardholder to visit a revalue location. --------------------------------------------------------------------- –END– --------------------------------------------------------------------- BACKGROUND INFORMATION --------------------------------------------------------------------- ERG Group --------------------------------------------------------------------- ERG Group is a world leader in the development and supply of integrated fare management and software systems for the transit industry and technologically advanced smart card systems and services.
