Loyalty has moved up the scale to a number 1 priority according to this study.
CIES Study cites customer loyalty and retention as top concerns

January 28, 2003

Customer loyalty and retention is the No. 1 concern of food-industry executives around the world, says Paris, France-based CIES - The Food Business Forum in their annual "Top of Mind" survey
According to the survey, 64.3% of respondents cited loyalty and retention as being "top of mind," moving it up from the No. 3 spot a year ago.

The survey goes on to state that how greater loyalty is earned is of some debate among the executives surveyed. Several--most likely spurred by the launch of Nectar in the U.K.--think that further investment in loyalty cards and programs are the way to go. The other camp places emphasis on marketing the retailer as the brand (like Target in the U.S.), or on keeping prices low.

Rounding out the top 3 concerns for 2003 are food safety and security (No. 2) and internationalization of food retailing (No. 3).

The survey polled 378 executives from food retailing and manufacturing firms in Europe, the Americas and the Asia-Pacific region.
