Eurosmart Estimates Smart Card Unit Volumes Grew In First Half of 2002
-----------------------------------------------------------
Smart card shipments increased by 13.4% to 348 million units during the first six months of 2002, thanks mainly to increases in sales of banking, pay-TV and transport cards, estimates smart card vendor association Eurosmart.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Shipments of the largest category of these microprocessor cards, subscriber identity module cards for mobile phones, increased only marginally, according to the vendor group. Eurosmart estimates vendors worldwide shipped 210 million SIMs during the first six months of 2002, 5% more than the number of SIM cards Eurosmart estimated for the first half of 2001. The association predicts SIM card shipments will decrease next year, however.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Banking card shipments grew by nearly 11% to 83 million units, and pay-TV card shipments more than doubled to 21 million units, compared with last year. While banking card activity will remain “stable” next year, pay-TV card shipments may decrease slightly, says the association.
------------------------------------------------------------
This year, Eurosmart broke out a separate IT security card category, for which it estimates vendors shipped 6 million cards. Transport cards with microprocessors grew by 80% to 9 million units. Some or most of these are contactless cards. This category will remain stable or increase in 2003, while IT security card shipments will remain stable.
-----------------------------------------------------------
The association estimates vendors shipped another 546 million cheaper memory chip cards during the first half of 2002, down by 7.5% from the same period in 2001. By far, prepaid telephone cards accounted for most of these memory cards, and the association says vendors shipped about 500 million of them during the first six months of 2002, down by 9% from a year earlier. Transport fare-paying cards, however, most or all of them contactless but without microprocessors, grew by 80% to 18 million units.
------------------------------------------------------------
The vendor association says its members represent about 90% of chip card shipments worldwide and says it adjusts its estimates upward to take into account shipments from nonmembers. The association, however, has had a reputation for over-stating shipment figures, and while a push is on to require vendors to have the figures they submit to the association audited, not all have agreed to do so. The association does not make estimates on chip card revenue, which other industry sources estimate declined during the first half of the year.
