Japan’s Fujitsu Ltd. and STMicroelectronics, which is based in France and Italy, say the new chip will use Ferroelectric RAM, or FRAM. Advocates say FRAM cuts processing times by accessing chip memory faster and require less power than the conventional memories used in smart cards. Reducing power consumption is important for contactless cards, which get their power from radio signals emitted from a card reader, and not by inserting the card into a reader, as with the more common contact cards. Transaction speed is also key, as contactless cards often are used to move people quickly through doors and gates, either when paying transit fares or for accessing secure areas of buildings. The new chip will be marketed by STMicroelectronics starting in the fourth quarter of 2002 as the ST 19ZR01, the two companies say. The card will conform to Type B, one of two contactless standards recognized by the International Organization for Standardization, or ISO.
