Date Posted: 11:43:53 01/20/03 Mon http://www.smartcards.net/transit/southampton.html ---------------------------------------------------------- Solutions for French Cities SchlumbergerSema - in partnership with ERG - has signed major contracts for integrated transit solutions in in five French cities: Bordeaux, Rennes, Rouen, Orléans and Caen will implement contactless ticketing for their transport networks, optimising their urban transport resources and making public transit easier and more efficient for patrons. London to introduce contactless ticketing Contactless gates SchlumbergerSema has been selected to supply contactless cards for the London Underground and bus systems. Begun in the mid 1990s, the project was lead by Transport for London with the Transys consortium eventually selected to implement the system. One of the world's largest contactless ticketing projects, the system will eventually service five million passengers. SchlumbergerSema will supply over two million Easyflow contactless memory smart cards. Small-scale system trials have been underway and field introduction is expected late this year. Contactless ticketing roll-out underway in Paris SchlumbergerSema is also a supplier for contactless smart cards, card personalization and system integration in Paris where nearly ten years of research and development has resulted in a new city rail pass called "Navigo." 40,000 RATP agents have been conducting tests over the past year and deployment is now beginning with annual card holders; a full rollout is expected next year. Managed by SNCF and RATP, the Paris system serves both the city subway and suburban railway system. Rail officials say that contactless smart cards will improve the system in several ways: Improve people flow and speed of passage for customers Reduce fraud Allow the introduction of new customized services Smart Cities: Southampton, UK Smart city card pilot co-funded by the European Commission will set the trend for multi-application city cards SmartCities facilitates cashless city services... SmartCities aims to design a dynamic smart card and multi-application management architecture which will enable mid-sized cities to reap the full benefits of smart cards, without being tied to one unique proprietary model. The project - a public and private sector partnership with a true European dimension - combines the knowledge, technology and skills of all the stragetic partners involved. For details on the partners and their roles: Southampton established as leader in innovative city management The new SmartCities card will allow Southampton citizens to use and pay for leisure, library and transport services in the City without using cash. It will also be used to access services and for payments at Southampton University. Use of the card could be extended to other services throughout the City in the future. Essential to the viability of the scheme is the ability to add and remove applications from the smart card, using either a public-access city terminal, dual-slot mobile phone or Internet-connected PC.
