Introduction
F�renings Sparbanken, Merita Nordbanken (currently known as Nordea) & SEBanken have implemented a common national smart card e-purse scheme under the name of CASH, of which the first pilot began in Uppsala and Halmstad in 1996. Following the success of the pilots, and the arrival of SEBanken into the consortium, the decision was made to roll out the CASH card nationally, starting in G�teborg and Malm� in September 1998, and rolling out to the 15 largest cities in Sweden before expanding to rural areas. Handelsbanken joined the consortium in 2000.

CASH is now firmly established among target market groups and has retained its futuristic image.

In March 2001, the Swedish CASH consortium was the first Proton licensee to announce its adoption of the Proton Prisma range of Products: in October 2001, Nordea started a pilot using Proton Prisma DP cards for EMV.
