The jury is out

Good morning,

I have just wanted to congratulate you on your column regarding the PM's remark "the jury is out" on the tax department.

The question you put to John Howard was brilliant.

His response demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of how the business community is suffering the incompetent and rushed introduction of the tax changes 'we had to have'. And, it is not over yet! AASB1020, equity/debt rules and the taxing of trusts as companies are thundering towards us, while we continue to try to digest the huge quantity of clarification (and dare I say it, contradiction) on the application of ATO-defined changes to the taxation system.

Unless my memory serves me badly I remember one of John Howard's promises to the business community at the election before last was 'to cut red tape by 50%'. My involvement with BAS requires me to do five times as much work for the ATO as I did before. Four quarterly BAS returns, plus an annual income tax return, compliance rules over productivity.

Even 'blind Freddy' is able to see that the agenda for 'tax reform' is
totally out of the control of our elected government and held firmly by the bureaucrats at the ATO. What is frightening is that the government cannot, or will not see it.

At 54 I have had enough and am going fishing - good luck with questions and don't let them off the hook!
