Story Chat! Alyssandra's Stories. (r)

So - I still have a little under two hours before it's not June 5th anymore! Which means I am officially opening our long overdue 3rd story chat on time.

sk proposed Alyssandra's stories - all of them - as our choice for this chat, and Alyssandra graciously gave her permission, and so we're off!

Also - as it's been a while, let me offer a quick refressher on our basic groundrules.

We don't have many, but remember first and foremost and always that we are discussing the stories, and LFN fanfic, and perhaps writing fanfic, but not Alyssandra herself.

Second, we have Alyssandra's permssion, and the stories are publically posted - so please feel free to say whatever you like about the stories themselves, and not necessarily as constructive criticism. This discussion is not for Alyssandra's benefit, but for ours. What we, as readers, liked and enjoyed and didn't like and why and why not.

This discussion is, of course, also public, and Alyssandra may very well decide to pop by and read it - and we will welcome her if she does. The one cavet is that we like to give the thread 24 hours for the board readers/participants to comment before the author jumps in.

That all being said (and unfortunately I let our agreed upon set of ground rules fall off the board before I saved them, so if I've forgotten one, please let me know....), step right up and join in!

So, I've just finished re-reading all of Alyssandra's LFN stories, and my very first reaction is to be sitting here grinning.

This is a lovely collection of short, fairly happy stories - stories in which our struggling hero Nikita is able to hold on to bits and pieces of things that make her happy, even in the environment that is section.

One of the things I like best about these stories is the way Alyssandra imagines a backstory for Nikita, and works it in. She plays with what the ability to survive on the streets, and to have survived a drunk for a parent, really might mean for a person like Nikita - and the way she works that clever, smart, manipulative kid into her stories - without loosing the essential generosity of spirit that marked the young woman Nikita became - at least in the first several seasons.

I also liked that these stories were often, intentionally, humorous - without compromising the hard edges of section life.

There is something, though, in the tone of these stories that seems to mark them as distinctively 'early' as LFN fanfic - and I'm puzzling about what that might be (other than the obvious canon alterations....). Anyone else find or sense this?
