Yes, because they have learned that if they want to hold them, they ask me and I let them hold one and explain how dangerous they can be when used irresponsibly. Any gun is potentially deadly, whether it is an Army rifle or a single shot shotgun. The point is to teach them to be responsible and respect them. My kids know that if they touch the weapons without my permission, they are going to be severely punished.

It is dangerous having kitchen knives took but I don't hear anyone complaining about that. Think about it, my ammo is locked up, so the worst that will happen with my M-4 is my son could pick it up and smack someone with it. The kitchen knives are put up, but not locked up... So, what's the bigger threat?

Read my response down below. By being exposed to them, the guns lose the 'Hollywood' appeal, and are seen as more commonplace, and seen as tools. I had guns around all my life.

Yes, I'm teaching my oldest son now in fact.

Sorry, so I guess the people who train Olympic shooters are contributing to this "more violent world"? I was taught to shoot at a very young age, and I'll give you three guesses to how many people I have shot at (either accidently or purposefully). Your remarks aren't disrespectful, they are ridiculous. Teaching a kid to shoot correctly along with firearm safety leads to no more acts of violence than teaching a kid to drive a car and car safety leads to driving accidents. If you approach the subject emphasizing the potential danger and the many reasons they need to respect them, in the end you have a safer operator, whether they are behind the wheel of a car, or the stock of a rifle.

As for self defense, there are other ways, but if someone is trying to break into my house, I don't know what they are carrying. A knife, a gun, maybe they are unarmed. I'm not taking any chances.
