I don't like this comparison or the one you made with the kitchen knife and gun.

Kitchen knives are made for cutting up meat/vegetables/etc.

Cars are made to drive.

Guns are made to kill. No matter if it's human or animal, a gun has no other function than to maim or kill. Don't name "threatening" as a function of a gun, because if it could not hurt or kill, it wouldn't be capable of being a threat, now would it?

You can't just compare guns with cars or knives that directly. We're talking about completely different things here. What KSM is trying to say, I think, is that thinking of guns as normal is thinking of maiming and killing as normal. And that's true, the moment the tool is normal, the effect is normal as well. And whether you hurt animals or humans with it is besides the point, a gun can never be considered purely as a means of defense, because it is an offensive device, like it or not.
