Subject: A new church I found...

I finally got around to attending a church that I had heard about from like minded people. It's called "Unity on the River" and it is part of the Association of Unity Churches. Ever heard of them? I hadn't. But what a wonderful place! The church is actually in a shopping plaza, formerly a supermarket. Isn't that funny? The Sanctuary is a large and lovely place with open rafters and lots of flowers and light. The music is provided by a Jazz quartet, with songs written by the leader especially for the message of the day. The Minister is a woman and the entire congregation helps to run everything. The spirit of Love is tangible in everything and everyone I have met so far. At last, I can sit through a service that feeds my soul rather than have to think of ways to make pieces of someone elses message fit into my thinking.

Here are the FIVE UNITY PRINCIPLES of the Unity Church.....

There is one Presence and One Power in the Universe, God the Good Omnipotent.

"The Christ, the perfect idea for mankind, is in every one of us. We are here on earth to learn to express our own Christ essence; to remember our own divinity."

Human beings create their experiences by the activity of their thinking. Everything in the manifest world has its beginning in thought.

Prayer is creative thinking that heightens the connection with God-Mind and therefore brings forth wisdom, healing, prosperity and everything good.

Knowing and understanding the laws of life, also called Truth, are not enough. A person must also live the Truth that he or she knows.

So, What do you think of that? Do these statements resonate with you? Do you agree or disagree? If you agree, is there one that stands out for you as a powerful statement of truth? If you disagree, what is it that you would change? Open discussion welcomed on all levels!!!!

[> Very interesting, Lissa! Okay, so what tightens up my guts is that they call themselves a "church". But that might only be me, haha. The word church just implies a different belief to me. I really like the power-of-thought message, because that is what I believe. To me it sounds like a real alternative! Cool, and about time to spread out this concept. :) -- Martina, 05:17:59 08/24/03 Sun

[> Well I do not care for the "Good omnipotent" That means there is either no evil, or an evil with equal power. I also do not agree that prayer brings "everything good". That means prayer is limited by our egos, what is "good" for me may not be "good" for you. Who defines the "laws of life"? If anyone defines these laws for me, then they are not my laws. I do not believe that life has laws, life has possibilities and probabilities. If I were to define a law for life, I would at that moment be limiting the life I can live because of that law. But I will admit, it sounds better than most of the churches I have experienced. :) -- John Scott, 10:35:56 08/24/03 Sun

[> Lissa is this the same as the Unitarian Universalist churches I've read about? I agree with some things but not others (which is why I set up my own "belief system" because I take things from many belief systems & integrate what makes sense out of them for me). My question is this, what if peoples "laws of life" or the "truth" are totally different (as they seem to be). Does any one human being or group of human beings have the power to say what the laws of life are? I have a problem with people telling me what to think or believe - period. So I guess that's why I am a solitary practitioner of what I believe in only because I make up my own rules and beliefs. I do think they're on the right track tho'. It's a pretty open concept considering most belief systems. I also believe that if it's comfortable for you - whatever you believe in, then that's what is right for you (as long as it harms no one else of course!). -- Lori, 16:54:21 08/24/03 Sun

[> It does sound similar to the U/U church except I think they have 6 or 7 principals, and they relate them to the colors of the rainbow, so it must be 6...U/U however, dont mention christ, and they dewell ( I cant spell this word) mostly on being a good person to become as close to god as we can by being like God. But they rarely even use that word! I went to a church run by the congregation and it was awesome until the minister was hired and then all we heard about was christ...thats when I left. I too have that feeling when I hear the word church, and christ hits me the same way, even though I have come to understand more about him. Iam glad Lissa you felt peace and love there! I hope they are as open to others as they sound -- Jeannine, 01:52:45 08/25/03 Mon

[> Thanks for the clarification J. I knew they were either the same or very similar. It all gets down to how you feel when you're in whatever group you attend (I use group because I don't like the word congregation). More power to you Lissa - if you feel good attending their gatherings, I'd keep going too. Sometimes I wish there were more people that believed in the same things as I do. It gets kinda lonely not being part of a group sometimes but I do enjoy going to different gatherings just to learn and see what else is going on in the world. -- Lori, 22:58:54 08/25/03 Mon
