Subject: Hi, Martina! I'll contribute some meaningless chatter. I told my doctor yesterday that I was waking up in the middle of the night, so she asked me how much coffee, how much tea I drank in a day. Then came the clincher. Do you ever eat chocolate? Yes to all the above, and too much caffeine is waking me up. I have been using decaf coffee for three years, but even a little caffeine can do the evil job. So, I have decided to cut the caffeine intake in half. What is a hot drink a person can take that has no caffeine? I tried chicken soup yesterday, but once a day is enough!

[> [> Hi Ron! :-) Chicken soup is salty too, I like my tea sweet :-) what about hot milk with some honey? isn't that also supposed to make you calm and give a nice sleep? Or hot cocoa? :-) -- Antje, 11:34:06 11/04/03 Tue

[> [> [> oh, and what about "Malzkaffee"? We have Carokaffee here, it's a coffee substitute made from barley malt! It's yummy and has no caffeine at all! It's what I used to drink during pregnancy when I couldn't stand coffee ;-) -- Antje, 11:37:28 11/04/03 Tue

[> [> [> [> I haven't seen those two on the grocery store shelves here, but I'll look. The warm milk with honey sounds good. Doesn't cocoa come from chocolate which has caffeine? We used to have a drink made from powder called Postum, obviously a brand name. It was made from some vegetable material. I guess I can always drink water! Anyway, I'm not cutting out caffeine entirely, just cutting it in half. Maybe a health food store can give me an idea. -- Ron, 15:03:08 11/04/03 Tue

[> [> [> [> [> Yeah Ron, you probably don't want any hot chocolate either. Chocolate does have some caffeine in there. What about tea? There are some lovely herbal teas which will make you feel as though you are having a nice hot drink. I should stop drinking morning coffee but I can't, I've tried. What I miss is having a warm cuppa so when I try and cut out the coffee I switch to tea. -- JeanClaire*, 15:31:39 11/04/03 Tue

[> [> [> [> [> [> yes, true about the chocolate, I forgot. We've these instand cocoa powder, my sons love to drink it in milk, but you're right about the caffeiine of course! You know when it's cold outside a hot water with some fresh lemon juice and sugar is a nice drink too. We often serve this "vitamine C bomb" when we've a cold :-) I think herbal teas is an excellent idea (or Roibos tea. it's an african plant, tastes like black tea, you can get it flavored and it's high on vitamin C and other good stuff, NO caffeine at all!) and also the health food store. If you like Ron, I'd be willing to send you some Carokaffee over, just give me your address! I'd be happy to send some! :-) -- Antje, 17:08:02 11/04/03 Tue

[> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> Antje, I love rooibos. The tea is also low in tannins which makes it easier on my stomach to drink. Funny, I can drink coffee in the am no prob but a cup of tea will double me over. Rooibos is the only tea I can drink in morning. The tea is good for those with digestive problems and even with skin problems. -- JeanClaire*, 22:13:51 11/04/03 Tue

[> [> I'll add my two cents to the caffeine discussion.... One of the problems with caffeine is that it binds up calcium so that your body can't use it. It is the lack of calcium in your muscles that makes you twitch. I'm going on memory here, so forgive me if I don't know all the facts, but I have found over the years that if I have had too much caffeine, that popping some calcium pills helps with the effects. Your body can only absorb 500mg at a time, so in the evening, you can take a pill or two, spaced out to allow time to absorb. It's the calcium in the milk that is helpful. I love hot drinks all day and regular black tea is my choice after my cup or two of coffee in the morning. I have decaf tea which helps, but on the days I have overdone it, I take some calcium and that helps me to get a better sleep. -- Lissa, 10:20:57 11/05/03 Wed
