Last season we lost at home to Hull, Liverpool and Everton. This season we've beaten Hull, Liverpool and Everton at home. Last season we lost at home to Blackburn. Hope I haven't put the mockers on this.

- It depends what you want to do with it. Apple computers have a good interface and rarely crash and are good for photoediting, 2D designing and the like. They also have excellent customer support. In terms of power and spec then you cannot go past a PC. A Mac of similar spec to a PC will likely cost you 2,3,4 times the amount. Also if you are used to using PCs, then it takes alot of learning to change to a Mac. I use PCs personally, as I need the extra power which would cost ridiculous amounts on a Mac platform. - I was talked into converting to a Mac about 3 years ago and it was totally the best thing I've done (computer wise). I've got a brand new PC at work and every day I want to smash it and can't wait to get home and use my Mac.   - lower spec means nothing when it comes to a mac...historically macs have always had lower current specs than PC's but its what they do with the power.... if you time a mac and a PC to a)start up and be ready to go b) do a file conversion... usally the lower spec mac is faster... - That VHS won out over (technically superior) Betamax turns out not to matter. But that PC/Win won out over Mac is, I don't say tragic, but highly frustrating and regrettable. I hired a Mac for a month around Xmas 1985. It was amazing, but ludicrously unaffordable. The first WYSIWYG PCs were at least five years later, weren't they. Macs could have stolen the market, had Apple only been more open-minded and generous in its approach. For several years in the late 80s, the publishing operation I was involved with had laboriously to port over from PC to Mac in order to, as it was then termed, `desktop publish.' Ludicrous. And the Apple Laserwriter with which we output cost £5,000 (£12k in today's money) inclusive of a 50% `journalist discount.' Prohibitive, short-sighted, sad. - I think the cost issue is way overplayed. I switched about 6 years ago - once Apple had sorted itself out again - but still had to use Windows at work until last year. Windows machines, even if you take care of them have so much crap on them after 3 years that if you want to do anything serious with them, they need replacing. Macs are not so susceptible to viruses and all the other crap that slow computers down and thus last longer in good working order with minimal user intervention.   - Or, alternatively, don't. The whole point of Apple limiting their OS to their own proprietary hardware is that it guarantees stability - possibly the best thing about having a Mac. - I have used Macs since 1987 and never for one second regretted changing. Yes they are more expensive BUT by the time you add in all the free software ( and the cost of the operating system upgrades) the price differential is not so big. I don't miss the weekly grind of constantly upgrading my security software nor the constant worry about viruses. If you want to reduce the cost of buying an iMac go onto the Apple Store UK web site, go down to the bottom of the page and find the refurbished Mac section. Keep checking the page and you can find discounted Macs ( usually between 15 - 25% ). They come with an Apple one year Apple Warranty. Don't forget also that Apple rate very high on customer service and you can just pop into any Apple Store for help. - Play games, have their hardware upgraded, right click.... Admittedly I may have overstated when I said lots. It is a solid OS, it's just that you pay way over the odds because it's "cool". When my mum got her macbook 18 months ago she paid $1500 and didn't even get a dvd burner. My laptop, while somewhat clunky and about $300-400 cheaper in cpu/hdd/size pricing, cost me $500 two years ago and came with a dual-layer dvd burner. One last point, Ubuntu is just as reliable an OS as OSX, can be customized in every way, has awesome visual effects, is free and won't involve you forking out shedloads of money for mediocre hardware. On the other hand, it doesn't really sound as cool to use it and it won't make your friends say "wow". For those interested in saving money I have included inside two articles on how to build a hackintosh. - Also, FFC4life, it's quite possible to go in to a pc shop and come out with all the parts, except maybe the specific mobo, that mac computers have.   - That depends if, by hardware, you're willing to ignore firmware. For example, Apple may use a Broadcom chipset for wireless networking, but Airport Extreme is still proprietary. And good luck finding a motherboard with Apple's EFI firmware! Of course this can be hacked with custom bootloaders etc., but this is a) not trivial for a novice user and b) compromising long term system stability. I have no problem with the Hackintosh movement (quite the opposite in fact), but it simply does not deliver the same overall experience as a bona fide Mac. - A quick check on the Apple site this morning shows two iMacs for sale in the refurb section one at 25% off and the other 33% off, (remember these are new machines that have been returned probably for some minor fault. Apple then check them over, rectify any problem and give them a 1 year warranty). Once you buy one just go onto the main Apple site, click on "Mac" and you will find hundreds of video tutorials to help you get up and running on a Mac. There is also a video on how to transfer your data from a PC onto the Mac. Finally whilst all the replies above have merit, the ones about cost forget that what you are buying is value !   - It's just so frustrating that they didn't go straight away for, if not the mass market, then at least the volume business market. It's one thing making a personal splurge, but another equipping a multi-person workforce, most of whom may have only text-and-numbers work to do.     - I think you have to look at the market at the time that Apple got its act together. 10-15 years ago Microsoft had the market sewn up. It would have been impossible for Apple to break the stranglehold by a straight head-to-head fight. Their strategy was to build in value based upon a vertically integrated product. Basically by controlling the software AND the hardware (something Microsoft could not do) they could guarantee the end user experience. A principle which is more than valid today.       - Absolutely true, but slight cross-purposes, because I'm talking 24 years ago, when Mac launched. At that stage, it hadn't all been sown up, and the product was out on it own and super-desirable to anyone who saw, or in my case, hired it. But of course there was no Web via which to output its fruits, while its laser printers (an initial monopoly there too) cost the same as new cars.         Actually in 1987 (22 years ago) which is when I first came into contact with Apple, I set up an entire division using Mac Computers. Although initially expensive, the ease of use reduced our initial training costs to a level that made their overall cost competitive. We could have an ex PC person up and running after only 15 minutes inhouse training, none of that "Control/ P / M" rubbish. When corporate HQ eventually found what I had done they sent someone over from HQ to investigate. But the report vindicated the purchase on costs/ training / functionality and ease of use. But that illustrated the problem of getting Macs into business, corporate IT departments would not allow them. Their motto was "No one gets fired by using Microsoft. Microsoft was in the background of the proposition with MS-DOS, but only foregrounded with the spread of Windows -- which had near-similar ease of use of the Mac, plus price and -- above all -- PC installed base advantages.         Yes, I had heard only the IBM mantra. That brings us to another saga - how did IBM allow such domination to slip through their fingers? In fact the whole PC market tended to be defined as IBM, IBM compatible or Apple. I suspect it may have been huge overheads at IBM which had to be reflected in their pricing.         Cultural explanations at least in part....IBM were only used to dealing with customers for mainframes and seemed unmotivated to engage with smaller fry. Meanwhile, the U.S. West Coast boys who set the agenda of cool in those far-off days, deemed `Big Blue' a Soviet-style monolith with whom the hip should have no truck. I was travelling on a train to Birmingham on Saturday and overheard a funny storey about some supporter swinging on a flag pole and falling Into the river.
Does anyone know If this Is true and the full storey If so.

- Mate I was there, it was around 10 years ago ish a few of us were taking turns to swing on a rope attached to one of the old flagpoles over the river behind the Riverside Stand with a bit of help one guy swung out too far and the flagpole plus all the base which was in the tarmac went over the wall, we looked down and he was lying on the riverbank because luckily the tide was out with the flagpole across him fearing the worst we used a fire hose to shin down the bank but he turned out to be ok we shot off just as the police and fire brigade turned up I remember Les Strong shaking his head in disbelief! Just popped down to my local food hall/deli and they occasionally have some "strange" foods such as Croc/Kangaroo/Snake/Ostrich etc. I call these starnge as you don't see them in the usual "supermarket" outlets (Sainsbury's/Waitrose etc) but they seem to have a gone a little further now........

Birmingham v Fulham

Birmingham come into this buoyed by their point at Anfield before the international break and they look a decent bet at 6/4 to see off Fulham. Alex McLeish's team have lost to late goals against Bolton and Aston Villa, but they have won two and drawn two from their other home games and in the main their performances at St Andrews have been satisfactory. That might be good enough to see off Fulham, who continue to prosper at home but let themselves down on their travels. They have failed to win away from home since their opening day victory at Portsmouth, though they have some way to go before they match their dreadful away run of a couple of seasons ago. To be fair, they've only lost two road games this season, but they have a tendency to start slowly and that's a real concern. They conceded the first goal in recent away draws at Wigan, Manchester City and West Ham, but they may not be so lucky should the same happen at St Andrews. Birmingham may only average a point a game this season, but their conversion rate once they get their noses in front is 100 per cent (three from three) and there is every chance they'll strike first against sloppy Fulham.

Had a crap day today... Dislocating my knee at football training, then got suspended for a week from school. I got home and went onto the BBC website.. and saw the headline: Wigan's Players to foot cost of fans' tickets refund after 9-1 thrashing to Spurs. Made me laugh.

  - Yes - in fact I was at the 50th Anniversary concert for Worth Abbey School at Westminster Central Hall on Saturday. It featured performances from Worth, St B's, Ampleforth & Downside. Fantastic evening with Jazz, Bagpipes, Barber Shop, Brass and Percussion followed by a huge combined choir singing the Mozart Requiem. Your demerit system seems rather more, shall we say benign, than applied in earlier years. It's worth keeping track of those demerits though, as the suspensions go on your school record.
