Two Premier League referees have been appointed as fourth officials after their performances last Saturday piled more pressure on managers Rafael Benitez and Phil Brown - with Stuart Attwell restored to the top flight.

Liverpool's Benitez and Hull's Brown were both the victims of contentious judgements during defeats for their sides last weekend but the two under-fire bosses weren't the only ones to suffer the consequences as referees Lee Mason and Mike Jones have been removed from the middle at all levels.

Liverpool, who had two players sent off by Mason at Fulham, are appealing against the dismissal of Philipp Degen.

Liverpool's hope to have Degen cleared at today's appeal hearing. The Swiss midfielder was shown a straight red card for a foul on Clint Dempsey that most experts viewed as a cautionable offence at worst.

There were also protests over Carragher's dismissal for checking a run by Bobby Zamora that denied a goalscoring opportunity.

While the foul looked less than blatant on replays, Liverpool have decided it would be difficult to defend especially as there was no doubt about Zamora being through on goal.

I watched the minor cup game between these two teams on tv last evening and couldn't help thinking how three years ago this could have been a Premier League fixture.

I know that the demise of Leeds, as a major force, could be seen coming but these two, similar size clubs to ours, have also dropped so quickly, due to mismanagement.

It makes you think how lucky we are at the moment and that we should cherish every moment because, as Roy said recently, we have got to never stop running and improving just to stand still!

Anyone else watch the highlights on the main site and find find that the audio is totally out of time with the video. You get a shot flying over the bar from Zamora, and then the commentator getting half excited about it about 4 seconds later. I end up watching it with no sound.

- Rangers fans abused their position as guests on Soccer AM recently by predicting a score of 16-9 for their game the following day live on air - a reference to the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. Celtic fans last weekend behaved impeccably, despite warnings from Rangers fans online that some of their number were borderline terrorists. When Rangers came to the Cottage, I found their presence locally to be far more aggressive than Celtic. But that doesn't excuse the morons who did this, it was unforgiveable but elements form both sides are just as bad as each other. My ticket for the game at St Andrews arrived on Monday morning, opened it up last night and noticed that the stub has been removed.

I just phoned the TO to check that this was correct and the girl I spoke to said "yes". Now, whilst she was very pleasant and polite, she didn't sound too convincing.

Martin Samuel has written a piece in 'the Daily Mail' today saying the fourth Champions League place if deffo up for grabs this season and he reckons Fulham have an outside chance of getting it under Hodgson. - From a mathmatical point of view I think this makes sense...the top 4 have always had a fair bit of daylight between themselves and the chasing pack (bar a couple of exceptions). So, with an increased amount of genuine Champs League place chasers, surely this means that the top, top teams won't go through a season with one or two defeats, as has been the case before. Both Man U and Chelsea (and Arsenal) have at least a couple of defeats already. Whether this then opens up a more level playing field for the other teams remains to be seen, but how nice to be mentioned as a contender (not for relegation as was the case for many years!).
