  • It was the final one last Wednesday. Only seen the first the one so far, so can't judge the series in totality, but I can see David Simon's influence all over it already: engaging characters, and quick-fire dialogue etc. Don't think it's particularly fair to compare it to Wire/Homicide as it's only 7 episodes so won't have the capacity for the same character and plot development as they did.   • Yes, its looknig good. The problem, if it is a problem, is that it is in no way clear who the best four are. Last season Gera was horribly disappointing, Baird was not even considered a midfielder and Etuhu had a slowish start to his FFC career. All three have been great so far this season. Personally believe Murphy, Dempsey, Davies and Duff are the best four footballers out of that lot, but can't see those four all fitting into the same team.   German prosecutors investigating match-fixing in football say 15 people in Germany and two in Switzerland have been arrested and that about 200 games in Europe are affected. Police say more than 15 raids have been conducted in Switzerland, Germany and Britain and that documents, cash and valuables have been seized. Among the games believed to have been manipulated are three Champions League games and 12 Europa League games, all believed to have taken place this year. The 1-in-1000 is some sort of statistical measure.   All this talk of replays, video refs etc for me misses the point completely – and FIFA are probably very glad about that.
  
  We all know that football is not an exact science – we’ve been ffcuked over plenty of times ourselves in the past, as have every club, but the unpredictability of play and outcomes is what gets us coming back week after week after week.
  
  The Republic haven’t acknowledged that Anelka had a decent shout at a penalty – how many times have you seen those given? The game is extremely fast these days and referees are fallible. But slowing it down to analyse decisions is not the answer IMO, and I’m not a fan of it in rugby. But the key problem with the events of the other night for me was the fact that the ties were subject to a late decision to seed the top sides.
  
  THAT is what took some unpredictability out of the situation and THAT is what FIFA should be held to account on.

The Ref ignored his protests there, presumably in the interests of impartiality. Fortunately, Fowler had the opportunity to make amends for the refs error by missing the pen and hence sportsmanship was maintained in spite of the ref.   David Beckham has defended Thierry Henry following the France striker's controversial handball in the World Cup play-off against the Republic of Ireland.

  • There is zero chance of a replay, thank god. If we replayed every game where someone "cheated" the Premiership season would be 100 games long. Fact is that EVERY Irish player would have done the same in the same circumstances.
