Some criticism has been raised about Marco's vaunted words about most points in a season - a good statistic nothing more.
However there has been even more criticism about our 'bottom half finish'.
Let's examine a couple of other facts. Brighton won their last 2 games - well done to them. The Liverpool side they beat had already secured the title. Their form since in 4 games zero wins and 2 draws. Liverpool 'rested' the likes of Van Dijk, Alexander-Arnold, Robertson, Diaz etc and played 5 players who have played only 75 games BETWEEN THEM all season.
Brighton then had the advantage of playing a jaded Spurs side 3 days after flying home from winning a major European final, the score-line said it all.
If Brighton had lost those games, and all other results stayed the same, just four points would have separated six very decent clubs (including us) 53 - 56 points.
Some will say it's what we did on the pitch and to a degree I accept that, but with ...
The rub of the green / the bounce of the ball / ref decisions, it could easily have been us in eighth spot. As the cliche goes fine lines / them moments.

I'll put a bit more credence on the refereeing thing, as i genuinely think its been absolutely abysmal, and we've had even less of the decisions than usual this year - but the 'luck of the draw' thing with fixtures you mention is straw clutching IMO - we played teams after european games, we played a weakened liverpool side etc. We didnt finish 8th, or in europe, because we repeatedly bottled games (Everton, Brighon, Chelsea, Bournemouth, Villa) in the run in. - But some of those games you mentioned were influenced by pretty bad luck IMO: Everton somehow scored when we'd been dominating, Brighton v soft pen in 90+ minutes, Chelsea did us in injury time, Villa was a close game, Bournemouth a goal inside the 1st min didf for us.     - Yeah, you could say that or to quote an unpopular former manager "it's them fine margins", which it is. If Muniz finishes that chance early v Palace, it could have been us, if we didn't concede that deflected shot after bossing everton etc. and I've not really touched on refs, I genuinely think we've been treated abysmally this season.       - Referees - agreed, its been a torrent of shite. But the fine margins go both ways. If Palmer doesn't scuff a shot from 10 yards at SB, we go 2-0 and don't win that. If Robertson doesn't make 3 errors in the buildup to the Iwobi goal we might not beat Liverpool etc. Bottom line - we got into a really good position, and then lost 8 of our last 13 after only losing 6 of the previous 25, including a load against our closest rivals.   - Conceding goals, whenever, irrelevant if it’s 1st or last minute, isn’t down to luck, neither is conceding a pen, it’s least part to errors from our played & coach. We’ve had stuff we gk our way, but fans tend to remember things one way and feel hard done by, stats say we are about right given performances. Decent season (we matched our wage spend), but we fell off at the end despite low injuries and have missed big opportunity in league & cup. This points thing seems to be the new trend, if we got same points last season we’d have done this or that, managers like arteta are at it, it’s like a shield to try and deflect from any shortcomings. It doesn’t matter how mane points you get, all that matters is where you end up in the league, that’s it. Fact is we missed opportunities to finish 8th, or even higher, and finished where we deserved because we had a relatively poor last few months of the season.
