Why would Douglas Luiz join a mid table PL Club who have not shown intent in this summer window ? Because he thinks we are definitely ‘going places ‘? As much as Silva might impress a potential player , our wage structure and apparent ambition are not up to what a higher level player would expect . - In the book 'Soccernomics' by Simon Kuper & Stefan Szymanski, they quote a stat taken from premier league Football whereby wage spend, not transfer spend predicts finishing position in the league. Even if we were able to get the best young players on lower wages, wouldn't this lead to a lower finish in the league? I don’t see how we can keep going with our transfer policy if we want to manage our wage bill and keep finding at least one player to sell each summer to keep reinvesting. The likes of Iwobi, Anderson, Berge, Leno etc whilst solid and good players are probably all on £70k+ a week, we really do need to start looking for more Muniz types, not only for cheaper fees but because they’ll be on a long contract for probs less than half that, so the risk is reduced if they don’t work out. - Agreed on all, and you then add in the sell on factor. We got lucky with Mitro and Palhinha that there were suitors for ageing players. That won't keep happening.   - 100% agree, can’t rely on the Saudis, they seem to be a bit scatter gun with who they want and are after certain names and players who create marketing opportunities and larger bigger clubs won’t pay big money for 28+ players, palhina really was an anomaly and look how that’s worked for Bayern. I hope our last few seasons were to ensure prem stability and now we can evolve our transfer strategy.   - We would have to compete with the likes of Brighton, Chelsea to atract these younger players, and we would need a head coach who had the confidence and know how to work with developing young players.
