Subject: And tell me, too, while you're at it
In reply to: Marz 's message, "Tell me more of the details" on 13:18:15 03/18/02 Mon

Tristan actually laughed a little while Tia told him about the fun she and Corum had chasing each other around the pool. Marz seemed strangely attentive beside him as she spoke, though gradually he felt him begin to relax again. What did strike him as odd was the fact that Tia made no mention of what Marz was doing while she was having fun with Corum, and Rowan with Saras. Suddenly, he felt very guilty. How could he have ever assumed that Marz would lie to him? It looked as though his story had been true after all: he’d wandered into that cave early on and had simply fallen asleep, unnoticed by their friends.

He gave Marz an abashed smile when he leaned close and told him he’d been dreaming about him. It seemed almost too nice and sweet to believe. But…well, they were lovers. Marz told him all the time, in his own endearing way with words of course, how attractive he thought he was. He never realized that being told he was “fantastically hot” by someone he loved could make him feel so…perfect. At least for a little while, anyway.

“In an effort to save time, I thought it wise to split up into two groups,” Ravin suddenly said, jarring him from his brief daydream. Not surprisingly, Marz piped up with his offer to lead one group. Tristan thought Ravin would never buy that, seeing as how trouble did tend to hound his lover’s footsteps, but the older man seemed perfectly agreeable to the suggestion. When Jeremy immediately cut in to add that he (and Saras) would be joining Marz’s group, Tristan was quick to chime in, too. A couple people looked at him strangely, as if it were obviously understood whom he would be traveling with. That almost made him blush, but he held back admirably.

He felt briefly nervous when Marz reached discreetly for his hand, but as usual, either no one saw or they simply didn’t care. He was too oblivious to mortal emotion and expression to realize that he and Marz were not the only couple in the group now, so he still felt rather unique—which in turn made him feel strange, and singled out, and different. And now he’d learned that some humans considered his kind of relationship with Marz to be unnatural, so he was doubly on edge.

Nevertheless, he was disappointed when Jade came and stole Marz away. Already, he missed the warm hand in his own, and he stared sourly after the retreating pair, wondering what was so damned important it had to be spoken of away from the rest of the group. His cheerful mood had abruptly darkened, so that now he simply sat and stared sullenly at the ground, his share of breakfast (he guessed it was breakfast) having already been finished.

“Hm. I guess I’ll have to go with Marz’s group, then, to watch over the kiddies.”

He looked up and saw Rowan, who must have just arrived, for he was still ladling food into his plate. Ravin nodded his agreement nearby, causing Tristan to scowl a bit. He didn’t really like Rowan much. His tense feelings only heightened when he caught the elf staring off at Jade and Marz in the distance.

“What are you looking at?” he asked, feeling the hair on the back of his neck start to bristle.

Rowan glanced his way over the top of his java cup. “Jade,” he answer quickly—almost too quickly. Tristan was far too naïve to pick up on his sudden discomfort, though.

“Take it easy, pussy cat,” Rowan continued, chuckling softly. “My eyes weren’t anywhere near our hotheaded new leader.”

Tristan felt his face burn with embarrassment, so he turned his head, resting his cheek on one hand as he propped his elbow up on his knee. He saw Laurel arrive from the corner of his eye, followed by Argus. He bristled again, automatically, remembering the man’s reaction to seeing him kiss Marz. Maybe Rowan was like that, too. Maybe all the people were—but no. Erlic, Corum, and Tia at least seemed to be quite happy for the two of them. He sighed. How was he to ever figure mortals out if they could never be of one mind about anything?

He heard Laurel say that she wanted to go back to the west tower and wait out their stay in the ruined city with Justin and the rest of the Jann. After a while, he then heard Rowan ask Jeremy for an after dinner snack, and curiosity made him look up to see what the ugly kid (who he guessed maybe wasn’t so ugly after all) would pull out. When Jeremy reached into his bag and offered everyone a piece of colorful candy on a stick called blow pops, Tristan gingerly accepted, fiddling with the paper surrounding the stuff for a good five minutes.

His eyes widened when he put the candy in his mouth—it tasted like an apple! A real, sour green apple! He tried to hide his surprise and his delight, though he could tell the others were equally enjoying the otherworldly treat. He thought it strange that he should like sucking on this little fruit tasting candy thing when he hated fruits of all kinds, but decided it probably had something to do with the sugar. Maybe some of the stuff in the little white cigarettes had been used to make them, too.

After a few moments had passed, Tristan finally couldn’t take it anymore. In reality, it had only be a minute or so since Marz and Jade had walked off, but it felt like five hours to him. Burning with curiosity (and maybe a little tidbit of jealousy…okay, a lot of jealousy) he made his way over to them, walking up to stand beside Marz as if his presence had been expected.

“What’s taking so long?” he asked, directing his question to Marz while completely ignoring the bald-headed Jade. Wordlessly, he took another lick of the delicious apple tasting sucker before offering it to Marz.
