Rowan laughed at the sour look that appeared on his sister’s face when Tia told the dog to go sniff her instead. Strangely enough, she wasn’t really into dogs, although they listened to her as well as any other creature did, probably better.

“You will behave yourself!” she snapped, pointing a stern finger at the dog, who whimpered and cowered down on his belly before her. The cat on her shoulder loosened her tight grip ever so slightly, though she still continued to yowl deep in her throat.

With an exasperated sigh, Laurel grabbed Mikoshi and set her on the ground, the cat’s hair puffed out to make her appear twice her regular size. The dog wagged its tail slowly, brown eyes riveted on the spitting cat, but he listened to the druid, just as Rowan knew he would. A pity, that. It would’ve been wicked cool to see the fur fly, he thought.

Once they were assured the animals would get along without killing each other, they all turned toward the west tower. Rowan paused when he realized Isobel had disappeared after a while, though. They called out her name, searching for her as discreetly as they could, but she reappeared again miraculously enough.

The fun wasn’t over yet, however. Minutes later, they came head to head with five—no, six ghouls, flaky-skinned arms stretched out, fingers curling menacingly. The things were lumbering forward, moaning something about being hungry and feeding on live flesh. Rowan had to pinch his nose at first before he could get used to the smell. He almost pressed a kerchief to his nose like a proper gentleman, but thought Tia might laugh at him.

The ghouls proved to be no problem, especially for experienced fighters like himself and Isobel. They each dispatched a few, with Tia flaming one with her wand and Jeremy trying to fend off another. Rowan hurried up behind the one attacking Jeremy, slicing through its neck with both his swords to send the head spinning off its putrid-smelling body.

“You okay?” he asked, forgetting to commend the boy on his swordsmanship abilities the way he usually did. He brushed his fingers against the scrapes on Jeremy’s neck, frowning when he winced painfully. “Let’s hurry, so the healer can check those out,” he muttered, sheathing his swords and turning swiftly toward the west tower, now looming large in the near distance.

Once they made it to the actual Sharm headquarters, the place was remarkably easy to pass through. Not surprisingly, they passed a room full of dead or unconscious occupants as they ascended the stairs to the top, presumably where the dungeons would be.

When they made it to the third floor, Rowan was relieved to finally discover the rest of their party, plus one addition. The cell to his left held a sleeping Corum, as well as his two loyal friends, the handsome Marz with his arm around the dragon, the two of them talking quietly.

The other cell was a lot more interesting, in his opinion. A pretty girl with a shaved head was crouched in the corner, a cloak wrapped around to cover her either naked or nearly naked figure. She didn’t look at all intimidated, though, as she stared shrewdly up at her rescuers.

He had arrived just as Ravin was making introductions and awaiting the girl’s response. To his surprise, Mikoshi the cat suddenly shot past his legs and entered the cell, walking regally up to the former prisoner to rub against her knee. “Meow,” she said, staring calmly up into the girl’s eyes as if she, too, were waiting for a response of some sort.
