Author: Ravin and Marz
Subject: Taking a breather

The reason Ravin hated taking a human life was because his empathy picked up the terror a person felt when they were about to die. He should have been reeling from the emotional anguish of the Sharm as they drew their last breaths, yet he felt only a sense of peace. The same thing had happened when the Slayers died. Did all the fanatics in Neromba welcome death? They certainly didn't fear it!

When he saw Tristan raise a rock to the lock on the hairless woman's cell, he rushed forward. Ravin had every intention of stopping the dragon. If the lock was magically trapped the entire room might burst into flames or something when it was touched. He tried to grab Tristan's arm, but it was too late. The rock slammed against the lock, and Ravin braced himself for the worst. Thankfully, nothing bad happened this time.

He stared at the dragon for a moment, sensing his inner turmoil. What's eating him? he wondered. Since he wasn't aware of the close friendship that had developed between Tristan and Eremis over the last few weeks, he had no idea that the healer's kidnapping might be affecting him so deeply.

Ravin's eyes turned to Barry while Tristan was placing a cloak around the woman. The skull stared at the newcomer, and began making his usual suggestive comments. Rather than take offensive, the woman laughed off his remarks, a hint of annoyance sounding in her voice when she pointed out that she was shackled to the wall.

Once Tristan left the cell, Ravin stepped inside. After his special stone detected no magical traps on the shackle, he pulled out his lock picks. He could feel the woman's eyes boring into him as he worked to spring the lock mechanism. A moment later the shackle fell from her ankle. Ravin got a vague impression that he might come to regret freeing her from the shackle, but the feeling passed quickly.

"I guess it's time for introductions,"' he said, meeting her eyes. He gave her his name and the names of all his companions present in the chamber. "What might we call you?" he asked when he finished rattling off the names. "And, how did you end up in the ruins of Twilight as a prisoner of the Sharm?"

*******

Marz took pleasure in killing the Sharm simply because the bastards had taken off with Corum. No one got away with kidnapping or harming his friends. The Sharm would pay dearly for snatching Corum, just like Tegol and his goons would pay for taking Eremis as a prisoner.

With a satisfied smile on his face, he stepped over the dead bodies of the fanatical priests and followed his companions to the next level of the tower. He didn't even notice the naked woman because his eyes were glued to the still form of Corum that was sprawled out in one of the cells. It wasn't until Val announced that Corum was all right that Marz was able to breathe easier.

"You're such a damned hard-ass sometimes!"

Tristan's voice drew his attention to the woman in the cell. Not only was she void of clothes, she lacked hair in all the proper places! He was so surprised by her hairlessness that he didn't even get a chance to get turned on by her nakedness. Before he could react to that, Tristan covered her with a cloak.

Once again he was filled with surprise when the dragon came up beside him and grabbed his hand. Maybe his lover was actually loosening up a little more in public. That was a good thing as far as Marz was concerned because he hated having to hide their feelings for one another. Those that didn't like their displays of closeness could get raked!

"I feel so cold inside," Tristan said into his mind.

Marz squeezed his hand then led him into Corum's cell where they sat near their unconscious friend. The ex-gang leader set Yorik down beside Corum, tossing a grin at Brat and Eyes before turning his attention to Tristan.

He threw an arm around the dragon's shoulder, pulling him close. "I know you're probably driving yourself crazy with worry over Eremis. Knowing that we can't do anything about him right now ticks me off too, but there are others working to rescue him, Tris. Tegol won't kill him as long as he knows he can get information from him. And, once he learns that Eremis is a healer, he'll put him to work in his organization."

Of course Marz wasn't about to mention that Eremis would be treated like a slave by those higher up. "Hopefully, he'll be rescued before anything really bad happens to him." He tightened his hold on his lover while gazing deeply into his eyes. "I can't do anything for Eremis right now, but I'm here for you, Tris. Tell me how I can help rid you of that coldness you feel inside."
