Saras listened to Jeremy explain how his people viewed love and thought it rather sweet. Impractical for one such as he, but sweet nonetheless. He had to smile. He didn’t know if there was a difference between infatuation and love, but he also couldn’t say one way or another. Although he could like and dislike people, and feel emotions much in the same way everyone else could, Love was something else altogether. Elusive and no doubt dangerous to his kind. What would happen to a Genie who fell in love only to turn back into sand and vanish into the desert, not to be found for hundreds of years? Would they die of grief? would they waste away? and worse still: what would happen if the person they loved had loved them as well? No one knew where a genie went after he fulfilled the three wishes. There’s was no guarantee they could ever meet up again in the same lifetime.

Saras ate quietly, lost in thought until there was only salt left in the bag of chips. He licked his fingers clean while he pondered Jeremy’s words. He certainly missed Old Man Thorne who had just wanted him around for the company. He had sent Saras away with his last wish, just before he died, saying that he didn’t want the genie to see him die. The man had wanted him to remember him while he had been alive. Saras had vanished and then woken up what had been close to eighty years later, in the hands of a drunk. Saras hadn’t been awake more then a few hours before he had been able to fulfill the man’s wishes. And now he was here. There was sadness for Old-Man-Thorn, but nothing more then the sadness one felt for the loss of a friend. Saras had only spent a year and half with the old man, a sort of replacement for the little daughter who had been killed years before. Saras had enjoyed the time, but he had broken too many of the genie rules, and was now in this state before of them.

When the Centaurs came, he was surprised and like-wise did as the others, sliding off the camel and putting his hands up, wondering what would happen. He listened as the centaurs explained what had been happening with the Sharm and thus explaining their suspicious behaviour. They were invited to the fire the centaurs shared and to dine on what were apparently tasty snakes of the moon.

Once they sat around the fire, Saras turned to Jeremy, smiling lightly. “I thought about what you were saying… I think it would be worse if I could fall in love with someone. Once I turned into sand again… I would be gone, and they would be alone, and I might never see them again. It would probably be much too painful.” he said.

Sarosh drew his knees up and rested his arms on his them after helping himself to several pieces of the fried snake-meat. “Besides. Once Ravin makes his wishes, I’ll vanish into the desert again. That’s how it works… Even if I wanted to grant everyone wishes. I wouldn’t be able to. Once the third wish is made, I just vanish unless the flask is taken or Ravin dies… then I go with the flask, where it goes, until the three wishes are used up.”
