The whole way up, Rowan had kept to himself, doing as Erlic had instructed and keeping a close eye and ear out for any possible danger. The job suited him, since he didn’t feel much like talking right now. Tia still seemed mad at him, and now Jeremy had gone off to spend time with Saras, which bothered him more than he was willing to admit.

Now, keeping himself company around the fire of the centaur’s camp, he realized he wasn’t cut out for being a loner. He wasn’t inclined toward soul-searching or deep thinking, and he’d much rather exchange idle conversation about nothing in particular instead of just sitting here like a bump on a log.

After his little miracle from the genie, Ravin announced his desire for parchment, quill, and ink, which was a perfect excuse for Rowan to jump to his feet and do something. Quickly, he headed to the camel he’d ridden and retrieved his pack, which always included necessary items like that. Never knew when you’d need to fake a signature, leave a note, or produce a document of some sort, after all.

He brought the requested materials to Ravin, raising an eyebrow when he saw My dearest Kyri written in an elegant hand across a miniature chalkboard at the other thief’s side. “You must be crazy,” he said shaking his head, but he said no more on the matter, since it wasn’t really any of his business. He couldn’t understand what would drive a man to obsess over another person like that. After all, he preferred the good life, one free of commitments or heavy relationships, making it easy for him to do whatever he wanted, with whoever he wanted.

He stopped to stoop down next to Jeremy and Saras, to inquire after the genie’s health. The poor creature had looked horribly stunned, as if he hadn’t meant to do what he’d done—or at least hadn’t been aware of the physical repercussions. When Saras assured him that he was all right, Rowan grinned good-humoredly and jerked his head toward the larger group of Tia, Corum, Marz, and Tristan, indicating that they should join them.

He made his way over to the foursome just as the dragon was whispering something into the ex-gang leader’s ear, and couldn’t resist attempting to get a rise out of him. It’s just that it was always so damn easy!

“Hey, cool it you two,” he said with a grin, “The rest of us don’t want to have to sit around watching you reciting love poems into each other’s ears all morning.”

Tristan turned the expected shade of red and glared back at him. “I wasn’t reciting poetry,” he muttered, shifting his gaze angrily to the ground.

“Sure thing, pussy cat. So…” He hesitated ever so briefly before taking a seat next to Tia. “What have you kids got planned for the day so far?”

Of course, he knew they ought to be consulting the map Ebessa had drawn, and going over the long and tedious details of how to break into the city, but he figured all that could wait. The morning had already started off badly enough to waste it on boring stuff like that. Besides, they had the whole day wide open before them. So long as they kept their eyes open for any signs of the trailing groups of assassins, it really ought to be okay enough to relax for a bit.
