Ravin chided himself for not paying closer attention to detail after Isobel reminded him that the tribe knew that they were headed to the Sea of Salt. In order to save his people from being slaughtered, the chieftain would readily give up that information to the assassins. "Yes, I agree that we better be prepared for trouble," he told her before she returned to Alakbar's side.

I have to stop thinking about Kyri so much and start paying closer attention to what's going on around me, he thought as he led the others forward. Hopefully, they had a good head start on the assassins. If they continued to move at a quick pace, they might be able to accomplish their mission to retrieve the branches for the Queen, and be far away from the Salty Sea before the assassins got there. Once they were out of that area the assassins would have no idea where to continue their search, as long as they managed to cover their tracks.

With that thought in mind, Ravin tried to hurry the group along, but that was impossible because of Marz. The youth insisted they stop to investigate every little sound he thought he heard. It wouldn't take long for the assassins to catch up to them if this constant pausing continued.

Ravin decided it was time to put an end to Marz's nonsense when he shouted out a warning about some rumbling he supposedly heard coming from the ground. Since the youth seemed to follow Erlic's orders, Ravin made his way to the guildmaster and was about to suggest that he have a talk with his student when the first ant-like creature came burrowing out of the dirt.

Reacting quickly, the thief procured two knives and let them fly. The blades implanted themselves into the face of one of the mants, killing it instantly. Two more knives found their way into his hand, each directed at a separate foe this time. As always, his aim was true, and another pair of mants toppled to the ground.

When one of the things rushed at him, he whipped his sword out in time to block the creature's blows. While fighting the beast, he caught sight of Laurel tossing a dagger at one of the mants. The fact that she hit the thing with deadly accuracy surprised him; no, it actually shocked him since he never imagined the druidess to be any good with throwing knives. He turned his attention back to the mant, when the thing's sword managed to deliver a superficial cut to his forearm.

Ravin rolled away from the creature then came up on his knees brining him face to face with the thing. He ducked to his right to avoid the mant's sword then plunged his blade into the creature's side. Now that the thing was weakened, it didn't take long to finish it off.

The thief got to his feet, his eyes darting around the area. Justin was holding off two of the creatures quite admirably, proving his worth as a mercenary. Jeremy and Rowan worked as a team, finishing off more of the mants. His eyes fell upon the rock where Laurel and Tia were perched, with the druidess shooting off arrows at any remaining creatures.

"If we get atop the rocks, they cannot pop up under our feet!" Isobel shouted.

His eyes went wide when he saw her stumble as she tried to climb up beside Laurel. With one smooth motion, Ravin pulled a knife from his boot and lined it at the mant that scurried toward Isobel. The blade sunk deeply into the back of its skull. The weapons flew from the creature's front legs as it fell to the ground, howling in agony before it died. His eyes shifted back to Isobel then, worry coursing through him when he saw the blood that covered her.

Since the battle seemed to be nearing its end, Ravin rushed up beside Val and helped him dispatch another of the beasts before turning the healer's attention to Isobel. "See to her injuries before she bleeds to death. I'll watch your back while you work." Ravin kept a wary eye on the remaining mants as he accompanied Val to the large rock. On the way there, he managed to retrieve a few of his knives and made ready to toss them at anything that came too close to the healer or the women atop the outcropping of rocks.

As the mant tried to lunge at Alakbar's kneecaps with one of its two swords, Marz came up behind it and plunged his blade into its spine. He winced at the pain in his still tender wrist then gritted his teeth when the mant let out an ear shattering screeching sound before it died. Why the hell was everything so damned LOUD today?

Alakbar grinned at the ex-gang leader as he swiped up one of the weapons lying beside the deceased mant. "Am not fighting for four years being locked in cell. Very, how you say, sloppy I am being." The young prince shrugged his thin shoulders while looking around the area. With a sword in each of his hands now, he rushed off to engage more of the strange insects.

Marz got the distinct impression that Alakbar was enjoying himself. Guess I'd be anxious to kill something too if I was locked away for a long time. He watched the prince for a moment, surprised at how easily he was able to maneuver two blades at once. That did it! If Erlic didn't start teaching him how to fight two-handed soon, he'd have to teach himself.

Thinking it a good idea to get used to the idea of holding two weapons, he palmed a dagger in his left hand. Within a matter of minutes, he managed to slaughter three more of the hideous creatures. As far as he was concerned, they obvious lacked the skills needed to combat experienced fighters. He grinned as he plunged his sword into the carcass of a mant that was sneaking up on Alakbar then rushed off to send more of the things to the bug afterlife.

Three dead mants later, his attention was distracted by Barry's big mouth, shouting for someone to get dirt out of his eye. Angrily, he sheathed his weapons then crept up behind the skull who was watching Corum beat the crap out of a mant. He scooped Barry into his hands and began to shake him fiercely. "I'm just dislodging that raking dirt from your eye, bonehead" he chirped, before lining the skull at a mant that was crawling toward Jeremy.

Before he could think about trying to slow himself down, Barry flew right into the thing's face. The forceful impact knocked the mant out instantly. "BULL'S-EYE!" Marz shouted. "Nice job, Sir Cranium!" He roared with laughter before pulling out his sword and turning to finish off the creature Corum was bashing to a pulp. The youths shared a smile when the mant finally fell to its death then Marz's eyes scanned the area, looking for Tristan.

Even from a distance he would see the big rip in his shirt. He might have gotten angry if it wasn't for the blood that coated his lover's waist. "Tristan's injured," he muttered to Corum before running off to join the dragon. "Can't I leave you alone for two minutes without you getting into trouble and hurting yourself?" he teased. "Once Val slaps a bandage on you, I think we should confiscate all the swords the mants used. It's good to have plenty of extra weapons, you know. Oh, and don't worry about the shirt, Tris. You can buy me a new one when we reach a city that has a bazaar."
