Subject: More on Katz, infomercials, and media consolidation.

Following up on Tuesday's Lorillard tobacco infomercial,
Jeff Katz had Steven Brill as a guest on Wednesday night's show.

It was another of those strange little 5-6 minute interviews
where no calls are taken, just like the Lorillard episode. Also like the Lorillard infomercial, Katz stroked Brill to the point of being embarrassing for the listener. (I don't think Katz himself has the capacity for shame or embarrassment.)

At first glance, this seems like another day on talk radio. Brill has a new book out, and is a perfectly legitimate guest for a talk radio show. So why the kid gloves? Why the very short interview? Why no calls from listeners?

Brill's book is published by Simon & Schuster, the publishing arm of Viacom, owner of Infinity radio. Oh. Now it's pretty clear what that's about.

Katz' show is now just one long commercial. Does Katz REALLY like Brill's book? Does he REALLY support Lorillard's efforts to kill tobacco taxes? We'll never know because his opinions are bought and paid for. Jeff Katz is for sale.

Given the Brill/Viacom incident, I doubt we'll be hearing Katz or any of the other hosts say much about the evils of media consolidation, and the FCC's pending business .

[> Again, you make some terrific points. How come all the "big talkers" have nothing to say about the pending FCC bit of business? They know radio has turned into one big monolithic infomercial with very little substance. I think MS and Dom G. and J. Katz love their paychecks more than discussing the responsibilities of communication conglomerates to the public which supposedly owns the airwaves. [> Rockfish Wrong...AGAIN!! -- Bill, 11:33:34 05/21/03 Wed

If we remember history we know that Rockfish has posted all kinds of hate Katz things, but even with his history this post is way off base. Katz mentioned that he's had Brill on in the past, said that he regularly reads Brill's Content and was part way through Brill's new book. Since I was listening, I heard Katz say they were having phone trouble getting Brill on the line which explains why it was a very short interview and then he said he'd like to get Brill back on and get callers to ask questions too. Seems to me that Rockfish is blowing everything out of proportion just because he hates Katz.

[> [> When did Katz say that he was a regular reader of Brill's Content? That would be a pretty neat trick since Brill's content stopped being published before Katz even came to town. Here's a tip for you and Jeff: If you're going to make something up, you should make it something plausible. If you really don't think that the Brill "interview" was a Simon & Schuster/Viacom commercial, that's stunningly naive. -- Rockford, 16:16:56 05/21/03 Wed

Fish, I also heard Jeff Katz say that he regularly read (as in, past tense)Brill's Content. You know if it were actually a commercial for Viacom, don't you think it would have been easier and smoother for Brill to get on the air. C'mon Fish, just admit it...you hate Jeff Katz. Its ok, but at least be honest or up the dose!!
