  Why don't I shut the f--- up? Because I felt like pitching in my opinion, that's why. But see, unlike some of the yahoos on the board who call themselves things like "Someone Who Knows" and pretend to be on the inside, I'm up-front and honest about the fact that I'm currently an outsider.
  
  I wish I had lots of time... I'm working 65 hours a week at 2 jobs. So, what are you doing with your time?
  
  No, Clear Channel hasn't asked me to replace Beck. But then, I haven't contacted them about that yet. ;)
  
  Oh, and I have my own apartment, and my parents borrow money from ME, thank-you-very-much.
  
  But hey, you got the fat part right. Must be a nice feeling to know that you got one fact right in your entire e-mail.

  No doubt, Steve Carter spearheaded the drive to prevent Baldwin from carrying out their plan, but can you really doubt that reaching the masses through Smerconish had nothing to do with the school's decision to rescind their plan?
  
  From the Inky, "Balir Tambaugh, head of the Baldwin School, said Baldwin withdrew from the Iraq project because it did not want students placed in the middle of a political argument amongst adults....Parents learned about the ...project...in a Jan. 7 letter. Two days later, Carter went on a local radio talk show to voice his opposition..."
  
  That's it, a mere mention of it being on a local talk radio show...not one kudos to the vast audience of Smerconish had nothing to do with Baldwin's sudden 180.

  Does anyone remember the name of a sports host on WWDB during the late 1970s. No, it wasn't Howard Eskin but this guy was real anti-Philadelphia sports teams. When the Phillies and Pirates were dueling it out in 1979, he was very pro-Pirates. He may have been either a fill-in or a weekend sports host. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks very much.

  WPHT finally came up with an acceptable candidate to host the Sunday night show. The guy is a bit green but he is polite and will let callers make their point(s) without interrupting or cutting them off prematurely.
  
  He is definitely a shill for the left wing but he makes no bones about it and that I can live with. I just hope WPHT has no plans of turning Sunday night into a male-female tag team and bring Ruby Cheeks or some other cipher back for the 4th or 5th time as Larry's other half.

  I listen to Tom Marr on WCBM in Baltimore and on WOR in NYC. Sometimes on WOR they broadcast college basketball games instead of Tom (7pm-9pm est) :(
  
  So I can't hear the show on the radio or on WOR's internet stream...however the show still goes out to unknown cities via the WOR network. Does anyone know a radio station that carries Tom Marr on WOR and streams it on their site?
  
  I really want to be able too hear that 7-9pm show when basketball is broadcasted Bah!

They would run spots for say, a rocking chair company ... that store would get a BIG response ... not only from blue hairs but from the 25-54 demo as well.   It was a mistake I know, but I left my radio on after Rush finished today (1/2/03)on the BIG SWAQ-ER and MS was doing a duelcast of his CNN Talkback show on radio.

• Build-your-own talker. -- "Vince from Villanova" (PD and host wannabe extraordinaire!), 00:39:38 12/20/02 Fri
  Okay, there's been a lot of talk in the past about how to fix WPHT, or about how much this town needs a second talker. And after posting my idea of what WPHT's lineup should look like (as well as the likelihood, or lack thereof, of its being implemented), I figured it might be fun to put together a theoretical lineup for a competing station, and I'm curious to see what the other would-be PDs on here would try as well.
  
  But there are a couple of ground rules that any such station would probably have to follow:
  
  1.) No Clear Channel/Premeire hosts. Clear Channel and WPHT seem joined at the hip, and CC doesn't seem to like having its own shows competing with each other.
  
  2.) No current WPHT hosts, since they probably have non-compete clauses in their contracts.
  
  So, here's my crack at it. Feel free to rip it to shreds. Based on the private e-mail I've gotten lately, that might be therapeutic for some of you.
  
  6am-10am - John Hancock (currently on WBT in Charlotte, NC)
  A sock puppet could beat Imus, but you also want someone who meshes with the rest of your lineup, and alas, Phil Valentine is firmly ensconced in Nashville. I can hear Hancock at night in Florida on WBT's signal (AM-1110 if you want to try it in Philly), and he's talented, but stuck in a bad timeslot on a station that's overstuffed with local talent. He sounds like a morning host, and he'd work here.
  
  10am-1pm - Neal Boortz (live, syndicated)
  The most underrated talker out there right now, hands-down. He's a talented, humorous Libertarian and a ratings gorilla with a history of staring down Rush in that one-hour overlap.
  
  1pm-3pm - Clark Howard (live, syndicated)
  Boortz and Howard are both owned by Cox, and taken together, they're the next-best thing to having Rush mid-days. Howard's consumer advice skews him to a female audience, good counter-programming against Rush.
  
  3pm-6pm - Sean Hannity (live, syndicated)
  This one's a no-brainer.
  
  6pm-7pm - Clark Howard (tape, syndicated)
  This would be Clark's third and final hour on tape-delay, mainly to fill time until...
  
  7pm-10pm - Michael Savage (live, syndicated)
  Personally, I hate his show, and I think his big national numbers stem mainly from the lack of competition in his timeslot. But I still can't think of anyone else I'd rather have here. It's hard to argue with his ratings.
  
  And here I get stuck. There's any number of syndicated daytime talkers that can be tape-delayed and run 10pm until 6am, but none of 'em do much for me. I'd rather split that time between two live-and-locals, but since I'm not a PD, I'm not privy to any demo tapes from around the country. So, I lack names to put here. Maybe John Ziegler, but he just moved out of Philly if I remember right, and isn't likely to move back right away.

  • The one thing I remember about Bill Figenshu is that when he was put in charge of figuring out what to do with WNEW(FM) in New York, he said that the station had no legacy since it had never lead in the rock ratings.   I notice that there are some technical difficulties with some of the live and taped reports on KYW via a phone. Sometimes if there is a live or taped phone report, there would be sound and other problems with the cell phone connection like for example when a reporter gives a live or taped report on the phone, it breaks up for some reason and that there would be gaps, in other words there would be words missing in the phone report by the KYW reporter. This been happening a lot lately. I think the station needs to get new equipment for live reports and new phones. I hope someone at 1060 will do something about this.

  HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Syndicated L.A. radio comic Phil Hendrie, who claims to have "the funniest show in the history of radio," will soon see if he can bring his magic to the small screen.
  
  Hendrie will star in an NBC sitcom as a former city cop who moves to a gated community, where he encounters the crazy residents as its new head of security. The network has hired screenwriter Peter Tolan ("Analyze That") to create the show.
  
  "The idea is essentially that we're creating for the TV viewing audience a slice of the new hyper America," Hendrie said. "In this post 9/11 era the world has changed. The new need is for absolute freedom and quality of life and absolute security."
  
  Hendrie, who's known for creating and voicing wild characters on his KFI-based nighttime talker "The Phil Hendrie Show" pacted with NBC and its NBC Studios wing earlier this year to build a primetime series.
  
  The show will focus on Hendrie's character, who has recently remarried to a woman with a sketchy past and a 14-year-old kid. Besides Hendrie's encounters with the weird local folk, the project will also revolve around his attempts at trying to forge a new family.
  
  Characters that Hendrie has created for his radio show may wind up on TV as well, including homeowners' association president Bobbie Dooley.
  
  "A lot of people in the business and people I work with have been raving about Phil for years," Tolan said. "He has not done TV, but he's an amazingly fast study."
  
  Tolan, who shares writing credit on "Analyze That," co-created with Denis Leary (news) the critically acclaimed ABC comedy "The Job." His other credits include the features "Analyze This," "America's Sweethearts" and "Stealing Harvard."

  I really like Dom's show. Dom provides many guests, national and local, and one can actually learn something from his show.
  
  Why does WPHT have to pre-empt or truncate his show with the 76'ers and Temple games? They got rid of the Phillies and they should get rid of this other sports garbage.
  
  Dom's show has real potential apart from the lumpen- proletariat appeal of many of the other hosts on that station. They should make an effort to give Dom the support he needs to expand his audience.

  Since Michael Smerconish's producers would not allow me to ask this question, I thought I would put it out to this Board for their thoughts. In the Inquirer, columnist Michael Klein noted that Smerconish's wife was the real estate agent that handled the sale of the home that Allen Iverson recently purchased (it was listed at $5.9 million). A few weeks ago, Smerconish had Larry Platt on hawking his new book on Iverson. What a coincidence that Smerconish stuck up for Iverson, calling his brush with the law over the summer nothing more than "a family matter." It is bad enough when Smerconish throws softballs for his usual gang of cronies- what makes this "interview" so hard to swallow is that Lavinia Smerconish gets a six-figure commission, while Smerconish pretends to be totally objective. Is there anyone else out there who is disturbed by this? Maybe he should be forced to run disclaimers at the start of his program like Dr. James A. Corea had to do.   My wife, a die-hard Sinatra fan, insisted we attend the Saturday night dinner and the Sunday event at the First Union Center. A few observations from both events: we are thirty-something, and we were among the youngest in the crowd- most people were in their 50's & 60's...hardly what you would call a young, hip audience; Pat Cooper was TERRIBLY UNFUNNY- no one was laughing, what a waste of the station's money. Equally unfunny was the station sales mgr. who was the "emcee"- no one at our table could understand why he was up there when Katz, Giordano, or Rollye could have spoke to the audience. Smerconish spoke, but he was interrupted by a heckler who was quickly ushered out of the room. Sid Mark went on about Sinatra and it felt very creepy and maudlin (I like Sinatra as a singer, but Sid he was not God, for crying out loud. Sunday at the First Union Center, it was obvious the concourse was "scaled back" to make the room look more crowded. Did not see a lot of sponsors. I give the station credit for trying this, but it was obvious they lost a lot of money. If they can correct some of this year's problems and find a way to get more than a predominantly senior citizen crowd, this could be a fun event.

  I would like to get your thoughts on the one hour interview with Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld that aired on KYW 1060 and WPHT 1210 today. I thought that it was an interesting program.   So, what else could you be other than a conservative? I think Michael just wants to downplay the conservative label for his national media goals. Michael should look at Chris Matthews.   Ok, I'm sure you guys get this all the time on here, but I was told to come here for some advice, so here goes: I am thinking about getting into the business. I'm not some naive 19 year old, I'm 32 and have a decent idea about how radio operates these days. That I'm still willing to take a chance should say something about how much I love it. I don't have any formal training, but am looking into going to school. I DO have practical experience, I have a show on a local college station (I live right outside Atlantic City, NJ). I am completely comfortable in front of the mic, I know how to work the board, and my breaks and segues are smooth. I have ZERO experience with production. That being said, I'll throw out some questions:
  
  -I am looking into attending the Connecticut School of Broadcasting in Cherry Hill, NJ. Any opinions about the quality of education you get vs. the price?
  
  -I have been told by a few local jocks that going to college isn't always necessary if you have a good demo tape and some experience. Is this true, do a lot of people break into radio without a formal education? I'm not trying to cop out of going to school, I just can't afford it right now, but I can have a demo done in a relatively short amount of time.
  
  -What can a starting jock expect to make, money-wise. Give me comparisons, small market vs. large, indy vs. corporate stations. I need hard figures or at least close ballpark, I have a family to think about.
  
  -finally, any stories you want to share about your experience in the field, whether you've found it rewarding, you hate it, whatever. Don't sugar coat, PLEASE BE HONEST and give me reasons why you feel how you do. I wasted ten years in another career because instructors and professionals blew smoke up my ass. I don't have another decade to waste.
  
  I have been a club DJ for a few years and recently started the on-air gig, and it's addicting like a drug. I just have to be sure that it would be a good, responsible move on my part, because I would really love to be in this business. Thank you for any advice I get, it will really help me make my decision easier.

  I had a hard time believing what I heard on the M Smerconish show today. He is now an official sponsor of "Philadelphia Magazine", a hoity toity publication edited by one of the shallowest lightweights to have ever befouled the Delaware Valley......Larry Platt.
  
  M informs us to read Platt's story about Allen Iverson's rough formative years. I for one will pass on that story and most anything else that has anything to do with Larry Platt.
  
  I thought M was carefully crafting his image as the savior of "his" people, row-house Philadelphians (not too many left at this point) and the suburbanites who used to be Philadelphians.   I do play Fantasy Football and absolutely love it. Playing was directly responsible for my huge interest in the NFL. I got to know different players from around the league, not just players from the Eagles squad.
  
  Obviously, since there is a "Fantasy" section on the NFL's own web site, and other major sites endorse or host it (CBS, ESPN, Fox Sports, Yahoo, etc.).
  
  Why is it that every time callers bring up fantasy sports on WIP, they are berated? Be it Howard or Big Daddy or Glen or Steve Fredericks, fantasy enthusiasts are labeled as "losers."
  
  Seems to me if WIP had a weekly Fantasy radio show, that would appease thousands of listeners, and maybe even attract some ratings.
  
  It's definitely not the "gambling" aspect of Fantasy sports that makes WIP stay away, because Eskin does has a weekly call-in point spread discussion with a handicapper every Friday, and Vegas odds are mention quite frequently by all the hosts.
  
  Former Eagles great Ron Jaworksi hosts an internet Fantasy Football radio show affiliated with NFL.com. Can it be that bad?
