  Steve is also banned from this board since I wallow in loathing and contempt at the fact that it is he that get to do a talk show fill in. It's obvious that I should be the one.   Seriously, the worst radio station I have ever heard. Time brokered aside, that station is the most awful thing I have ever heard. Only the cheesiest Klezmer music, and people who shouldn't ever be on the air EVER. What a waste of signal. Why does Irv Homer even bother paying for time there???

    • The problem with radio is that you simply don't NEED a sizeable audience to be successful. All you need to do is keep your ad revenues above your expenses. That's why a station that doesn't even show up in the ratings can thrive for years, while a station with a respectable 3.5 can be losing money and have to flip formats. • Live and tape reports on KYW via phone -- Julius May, 18:51:32 11/25/02 Mon
  I notice that there are some technical difficulties with some of the live and taped reports on KYW via a phone. Sometimes if there is a live or taped phone report, there would be sound and other problems with the cell phone connection like for example when a reporter gives a live or taped report on the phone, it breaks up for some reason and that there would be gaps, in other words there would be words missing in the phone report by the KYW reporter. This been happening a lot lately. I think the station needs to get new equipment for live reports and new phones. I hope someone at 1060 will do something about this.

  • That's because CELL PHONES SUCK. The audio quality of cellphones went downhill when they went digital. We got far better battery life for sure but as any news/talk person will tell you they SUCK.   HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Syndicated L.A. radio comic Phil Hendrie, who claims to have "the funniest show in the history of radio," will soon see if he can bring his magic to the small screen.
  
  Hendrie will star in an NBC sitcom as a former city cop who moves to a gated community, where he encounters the crazy residents as its new head of security. The network has hired screenwriter Peter Tolan ("Analyze That") to create the show.
  
  "The idea is essentially that we're creating for the TV viewing audience a slice of the new hyper America," Hendrie said. "In this post 9/11 era the world has changed. The new need is for absolute freedom and quality of life and absolute security."
  
  Hendrie, who's known for creating and voicing wild characters on his KFI-based nighttime talker "The Phil Hendrie Show" pacted with NBC and its NBC Studios wing earlier this year to build a primetime series.
  
  The show will focus on Hendrie's character, who has recently remarried to a woman with a sketchy past and a 14-year-old kid. Besides Hendrie's encounters with the weird local folk, the project will also revolve around his attempts at trying to forge a new family.
  
  Characters that Hendrie has created for his radio show may wind up on TV as well, including homeowners' association president Bobbie Dooley.
  
  "A lot of people in the business and people I work with have been raving about Phil for years," Tolan said. "He has not done TV, but he's an amazingly fast study."
  
  Tolan, who shares writing credit on "Analyze That," co-created with Denis Leary (news) the critically acclaimed ABC comedy "The Job." His other credits include the features "Analyze This," "America's Sweethearts" and "Stealing Harvard."

  • I would love to be wrong, but I doubt Phil Hendrie will play well in primetime. He'll have to water down his material to the point where it's barely recognizeable as his.   I really like Dom's show. Dom provides many guests, national and local, and one can actually learn something from his show.
  
  Why does WPHT have to pre-empt or truncate his show with the 76'ers and Temple games? They got rid of the Phillies and they should get rid of this other sports garbage.
  
  Dom's show has real potential apart from the lumpen- proletariat appeal of many of the other hosts on that station. They should make an effort to give Dom the support he needs to expand his audience.

  Since Michael Smerconish's producers would not allow me to ask this question, I thought I would put it out to this Board for their thoughts. In the Inquirer, columnist Michael Klein noted that Smerconish's wife was the real estate agent that handled the sale of the home that Allen Iverson recently purchased (it was listed at $5.9 million). A few weeks ago, Smerconish had Larry Platt on hawking his new book on Iverson. What a coincidence that Smerconish stuck up for Iverson, calling his brush with the law over the summer nothing more than "a family matter." It is bad enough when Smerconish throws softballs for his usual gang of cronies- what makes this "interview" so hard to swallow is that Lavinia Smerconish gets a six-figure commission, while Smerconish pretends to be totally objective. Is there anyone else out there who is disturbed by this? Maybe he should be forced to run disclaimers at the start of his program like Dr. James A. Corea had to do. I'd like to hear what everyone else thinks. Thank you!

  According to Mediaweek.com, Cramer's show is one of 15 that Premiere Radio Networks will cancel by the end of the year. The shows were reportedly put on the cutting block because they weren't profitable.
  
  So, does Premiere shove another show down PHT's gullet or do we get a local hour back? And who fills it? The hour's still past Katz's contract 'bedtime' of 7PM, but Dom could get a third hour, or Rollye might get to start before midnight.
  
  How about a one-hour "Best of Phil Hendrie"??
  
  The real question is, when is Glenn Beck's time up?

• Gravyfest observations -- Alan, 09:27:44 11/09/02 Sat
  My wife, a die-hard Sinatra fan, insisted we attend the Saturday night dinner and the Sunday event at the First Union Center. A few observations from both events: we are thirty-something, and we were among the youngest in the crowd- most people were in their 50's & 60's...hardly what you would call a young, hip audience; Pat Cooper was TERRIBLY UNFUNNY- no one was laughing, what a waste of the station's money. Equally unfunny was the station sales mgr. who was the "emcee"- no one at our table could understand why he was up there when Katz, Giordano, or Rollye could have spoke to the audience. Smerconish spoke, but he was interrupted by a heckler who was quickly ushered out of the room. Sid Mark went on about Sinatra and it felt very creepy and maudlin (I like Sinatra as a singer, but Sid he was not God, for crying out loud. Sunday at the First Union Center, it was obvious the concourse was "scaled back" to make the room look more crowded. Did not see a lot of sponsors. I give the station credit for trying this, but it was obvious they lost a lot of money. If they can correct some of this year's problems and find a way to get more than a predominantly senior citizen crowd, this could be a fun event.

  I would like to get your thoughts on the one hour interview with Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld that aired on KYW 1060 and WPHT 1210 today. I thought that it was an interesting program. My favorite part was the fact that Rumsfeld wanted a question from a woman and he got one from a KYW listener. The program aired from 5 PM to 6 PM.

  It always cracks me up when Michael tells a caller not to refer to him as a "conservative Republican". Um, Michael, let's see:
  
  1) Are you a liberal? - No.
  2) Are you a libertarian? - No.
  3) Are you a socialist? - Obviously no.
  
  So, what else could you be other than a conservative? I think Michael just wants to downplay the conservative label for his national media goals. Michael should look at Chris Matthews. Chris will freely admit that he is a Democrat and yet Rush Limbaugh let him be a guest host on his show. Why does Michael feel the need to run away from the conservative label?

  • He is, and always has been, a moderate than leans more right than left. Labeling one a "conservative republican" evokes the image of other b'casters like Bob Dornan, Rush Limbo, GG Liddy, and Michael Savage. I don't think MAS feels comfortable being lumped in with that crowd, so he plays the center to appear fair and unbiased.   Ok, I'm sure you guys get this all the time on here, but I was told to come here for some advice, so here goes: I am thinking about getting into the business. I'm not some naive 19 year old, I'm 32 and have a decent idea about how radio operates these days. That I'm still willing to take a chance should say something about how much I love it. I don't have any formal training, but am looking into going to school. I DO have practical experience, I have a show on a local college station (I live right outside Atlantic City, NJ). I am completely comfortable in front of the mic, I know how to work the board, and my breaks and segues are smooth. I have ZERO experience with production. That being said, I'll throw out some questions:
  
  -I am looking into attending the Connecticut School of Broadcasting in Cherry Hill, NJ. Any opinions about the quality of education you get vs. the price?
  
  -I have been told by a few local jocks that going to college isn't always necessary if you have a good demo tape and some experience. Is this true, do a lot of people break into radio without a formal education? I'm not trying to cop out of going to school, I just can't afford it right now, but I can have a demo done in a relatively short amount of time.
  
  -What can a starting jock expect to make, money-wise. Give me comparisons, small market vs. large, indy vs. corporate stations. I need hard figures or at least close ballpark, I have a family to think about.
  
  -finally, any stories you want to share about your experience in the field, whether you've found it rewarding, you hate it, whatever. Don't sugar coat, PLEASE BE HONEST and give me reasons why you feel how you do. I wasted ten years in another career because instructors and professionals blew smoke up my ass. I don't have another decade to waste.
  
  I have been a club DJ for a few years and recently started the on-air gig, and it's addicting like a drug. I just have to be sure that it would be a good, responsible move on my part, because I would really love to be in this business. Thank you for any advice I get, it will really help me make my decision easier.

  I had a hard time believing what I heard on the M Smerconish show today. He is now an official sponsor of "Philadelphia Magazine", a hoity toity publication edited by one of the shallowest lightweights to have ever befouled the Delaware Valley......Larry Platt.
  
  M informs us to read Platt's story about Allen Iverson's rough formative years. I for one will pass on that story and most anything else that has anything to do with Larry Platt.
  
  I thought M was carefully crafting his image as the savior of "his" people, row-house Philadelphians (not too many left at this point) and the suburbanites who used to be Philadelphians.   I do play Fantasy Football and absolutely love it. Playing was directly responsible for my huge interest in the NFL. I got to know different players from around the league, not just players from the Eagles squad.
  
  Obviously, since there is a "Fantasy" section on the NFL's own web site, and other major sites endorse or host it (CBS, ESPN, Fox Sports, Yahoo, etc.).
  
  Why is it that every time callers bring up fantasy sports on WIP, they are berated? Be it Howard or Big Daddy or Glen or Steve Fredericks, fantasy enthusiasts are labeled as "losers."
  
  Seems to me if WIP had a weekly Fantasy radio show, that would appease thousands of listeners, and maybe even attract some ratings.
  
  It's definitely not the "gambling" aspect of Fantasy sports that makes WIP stay away, because Eskin does has a weekly call-in point spread discussion with a handicapper every Friday, and Vegas odds are mention quite frequently by all the hosts.
  
  Former Eagles great Ron Jaworksi hosts an internet Fantasy Football radio show affiliated with NFL.com. Can it be that bad?

  Interesting how this Oklahoma City bombing story is heating up just as the Bush Administration continues to search for a rational for war. Problem was, most of the stories were manufactured by big time Washington PR firms in the hire of the Kuwaiti gov't.

  Irv Homer is a frequent guest on former Mark Howard's and now the Wally Kennedy hosted "Inside Story." Smerconish used to make an occasional experience but what about the rest of the Philly talk show line-up? I would love to see Dom or Jeff appear on that program and offer their views.
  
  Compared to some of the regular guests on that program, Dom and Jeff would be most welcome in my estimation. Did you ever watch Harriet Lessey in action on that show? Billed as a "media consultant", she has to be a charter member of the silly-stupid club. Her opinions are so childishly reflexive and poorly thought out she is an embarassment to herself and that show. Somebody most owe her big over at channel 6.

You have a double standard in that you tolerate whatever Michael talks about even though you would bash Jeff if he did some of those topics (i.e. trash cans).   • Why not? I'm sure Rich would be more than willing to sponsor this format. You could run MAS live 6am-7pm, "Classic Smerconish" 7pm-1am, and "The Best of Michael Smerconish" from 1-6am, thus getting as much live MAS as possible while still letting the guy get some sleep.   Bravo to 93.3 WMMR for their 9/11 coverage. Pierre Robert's original accounts mixed in with timely music all day long. After 9/11 media overload it felt good to "get away" for a little while today.

  
  Bravo to Glenn Beck whose inteview with George HW Bush this morning was also excellent. Glenn is more intellegent and thought provoking that he sometimes comes across. (The 8 week challenge and all).

  Ok, I know that only about 12 people in Upper Darby read the Delaware County Times, but their tv/radio critic Neil Zoren has a story today kissing up to Glenn Bcek (he kisses up to a lot of people) but of course he gets the story wrong, as usual. Beck was not syndicated because of a show he did on the 9/11 attacks, the syndication was already under way when 9/11 happened and that picked up the pace for the show to go national and let stations replace Dr. Laura. Oh and yet another thing he got wrong, Beck does NOT do his show from WPHT's studio. But hey what do you expect? I wonder if Zoren even spells his OWN name right?

For several months after, he did both his national morning show and his local afternoon show to fulfill his contract. In January, his website made a big deal about the "debut" of his national show and claimed to have the biggest "rollout" since Rush. In reality, his rollout was on 9/12 and on far fewer stations, though to be fair that number did grow quickly.   As I was waiting for Mr. Katz to begin his show, (Dom G. filled in today) I listened to the last 15 minutes of Smerconish's program. He refered to himself as "a shameless self-promoter" in a jesting way and then commenced to inform his listening audience on what cable programs he is scheduled to appear in the near future. I got a kick out of it.
  
  Earnest self-directed humor picked from message boards is one way to diffuse an image tarnished by a truculent wish to extinguish any trace of constructive criticism by the masses who listen to radio shows. Good for you Mike. Now if you can keep Pat Croce and the other jetsam and flotsam of insufferable local Philadelphia bores off your show I will know you are on the right track.

  Did anyone else hear yesterday's show? Jeff had on a representative from NJ that wanted to make 09/11 a holiday. Every time Jeff tried to explain why that isn't a good idea, she kept saying, "Well, I guess it affected me more than other people." Um, excuse me, I would argue the opposite. Jeff (and his listeners) are against the idea BECAUSE we care about what happened that day and feel this idea (just like KTC3) trivializes what happened on that tragic day. On the other hand, Smerconish's listeners (to quote Bogey) criticize “Opie & Anthony for a stunt he called "sophomoric" just days after his own event which turned the biggest national tragedy of our generation into what he admitted was ‘a circus atmosphere.’" To the Smercontologists, I again pose the following: Awhile back, Phil Hendrie had a bit where his “guest” had a fundraising event where people paid $5 to simulate sodomizing a Bin Laden dummy. Of course, callers called in to condemn the “guest”. Well, what is the difference between Hendrie’s fictional event and KTC3? I don’t think they are that far apart.
