• Are there still troops in Iraq? -- Rockford, 08:17:05 07/07/03 Mon
  It seems like every other day there's a new report of American soldiers being killed or wounded in hostile fire.
  The worst part is there's no end in sight, and no one in talk radio, at least locally, wants talk about Iraq anymore.
  
  After months of helping to drum up public support for the war, mostly by mocking anti-war protesters, the local hosts have all gone back to doing Oprah impressions (Sexy teacher contests, Do married people really have less sex?, isn't sex great?)
  
  The Bush administration continues to govern by arrogance, supplying NO information about the situation to the American people. What's the timetable for getting the troops out? What is the plan for transfer of power? Is there a plan at all, or are you just making this up as you go along? They basically just tell us peasants to "Shut up, and let the aristocracy do the ruling."
  
  The allegedly 'liberal' press corps refuses to push for answers for fear of being sent to the back of room and not being called on by Ari.
  
  Talk radio is the perfect vehicle for putting public pressure on elected officials, but they are taking a politcal pass. Aren't we still supporting the troops?
  
  By the way. Anyone know when the next big 'Rally for America' is? Just wondering.

  • This is talk radio Rockford. As one host said, the rules have changed. We don't have to be right anymore. It is very strange that so many people see talk radio as a real source of information when it is nothing but entertainment. Phil Hendrie was right about those people...they are weird.   Howard Eskin is a farse...A condescending (sp??), self promoting, bull *hitting liar......Two (2) things I never understand about his broadcasts??...1) Eskin continually repeats himself.   MSNBC fires Savage after anti-gay remarks

  NEW YORK - MSNBC on Monday fired Michael Savage for anti-gay comments.
  
  
  The popular radio talk show host who did a weekend TV show for the cable channel referred to an unidentified caller to his show Saturday as a "sodomite" and said he should "get AIDS and die."
  
  
  "His comments were extremely inappropriate and the decision was an easy one," MSNBC spokesman Jeremy Gaines said.
  
  
  There was no immediate comment from Savage, according to a spokesman at his office in California.
  
  
  The brash, tough-talking Savage is one of radio's hottest jocks. His Paul Revere Society advocates closing borders, deporting illegal immigrants, mandating health tests for immigrants and eliminating entitlement programs.
  
  
  The televised version of "The Savage Nation" began March 8 despite the protests of such advocacy groups as the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.
  
  
  Aired at 5 p.m. EDT Saturday, Savage didn't translate into a television hit. He increased the ratings for the time slot marginally, according to MSNBC.
  
  
  The incident that resulted in his firing began innocently enough. Savage was taking viewer phone calls about airline horror stories, and a male caller began talking about smoking in the bathroom.
  
  
  "Half an hour into the flight, I need to suggest that Don and Mike take your ..." the caller said, before he was cut off and his words became unintelligible.
  
  
  "So you're one of those sodomists. Are you a sodomite?" Savage asked.
  
  
  The caller replied: "Yes, I am."
  
  
  "Oh, you're one of the sodomites," Savage said. "You should only get AIDS and die, you pig. How's that? Why don't you see if you can sue me, you pig. You got nothing better than to put me down, you piece of garbage. You have got nothing to do today, go eat a sausage and choke on it."
  
  
  He asked for another phone caller who "didn't have a nice night in the bathhouse who's angry at me today."
  
  
  These bums "mean nothing to me," he said.
  
  
  GLAAD spokeswoman Cathy Renna said of Savage's firing: "It's about time.
  
  
  "This latest attack made the clearest case for why Savage has no place on any reputable news network. MSNBC witnessed firsthand exactly the kind of verbal assaults GLAAD's been warning them about for the past five months, and to their credit, they backed up their promises to hold Savage accountable."

  I just read on another web site, that a producer from "The Point" 96.5 in Philly was one of the two powerball winners last night. This was not on a local site, so even if its not true, it was funny how my brain said... "there's something familiar with that number 96.5" for a second or two.

  ...just getting tired of seeing that Book Banned In The USA! thread up top every time I come on here, and thought I'd do something about it.
  
  Oh, wait, here's some fodder for the Laura-haters... according to the latest Talkers Magazine, Dr. Laura has broken her tie with Howard Stern and has climbed back to the #3-rated national talk show host. (Rush and Hannity are still 1-2.) Many thought the Iraq war would damage her ratings, but apparently she saw impressive gains across the country.
  
  My take? She's still not as strong as she once was. In many markets, she's been moved to timeslots such as 6pm-9pm, when competeting stations tend to have weaker hosts. (I feel the same way about Savage; okay, his listenership is huge, but there's not nearly the level of competition at 7pm that there is at 3pm.) But those who said Dr. Laura was soon to be gone for good may have been premature.

    • If Beck's #2, then I'm #1. The Talkers article didn't mention anyone else on the list, but 4 or 5 months ago Glenn Beck was in a distant tie for 10th with the likes of Rusty Humphries.   about he economic impact of it. I know, I know... you all hate telemarketing so much that your all doing back flips about this new law. But before you tar and feather me for supporting this industry (I support anyone's right to ASK me to do something, and no ones right to FORCE me to do something, and I like people working, not on unemployment or welfare) let me give you some facts....
  
  Well over 3 million people in the US work in this field. Over 4% of the good sold directly to consumers is done over the phone. The average person purchases something from a telemarketer 3 times a year. And finally.. if telemarketing was so evil, so disruptive to life, and something that can easily be replaced by using other means, why did the politicians exempt themselves???
  
  Based on projections across the board, there will be anywhere from a hundred thousand to over 2 million jobs lost as a direct result of this law. The unemployment rate today just hit a nine year high, does anyone want it to go higher?
  
  I know its cute to say who cares? Or they deserve it, but the fact is a ton of legitimate businesses will be effected by this. Just like gun laws or tax laws, it will effect the honest people first - the crooks in the industry will be the ones who will still call people on the DNC list, in hopes of a quick score before they shut their doors and move on to set up shop somewhere else.
  
  Its too late to stop this bill - Bush gleamed as he signed it into law (that guy will do anything he can to make him look good to Joe six-pack) and no politician wanted to dare be in favor of those evil telemarketers (except the one that call and ask you to vote for them or to give them money - they are different, I keep forgetting that) so what will happen will be happening soon enough.
  
  In writing this, I don't even expect anyone to agree with me, or for this to even stop someone from signing up on the list - I know your hatred is set in stone. I just want you to NOT bitch and moan about new welfare programs, higher taxes, industry bailouts, extended unemployment payments or whatever else might happen within a year or so. And if you are going to bitch about it, you might want to save it for when the telemarketer that calling on behalf of your congressman calls to you to ask for your money and/or your vote. Oh yeah... please don't give him your money as you might want to save it for if an unemployed telemarketer calls you to ask for money to help pay his bills, as charity calls will be exempt too.

    • I know somebody who will be locked out of this industry because of the Do Not Call list but my hate for being called is greater than my compassion for his losing a job. That's what it boils down to, people are so fed up they don't care. I feel that since I pay for the phone line I should have a say over what comes over it.       • I'm not convinced it's just 5%. Once you've seen the tricks of telemarketers and even done them yourself, it's a bit easier to recognize them when other telemarketers do them to you, so it seems to me that my former company is the rule, not the exception.           • A radio station can't turn on my radio. I have to take a voluntary action to invite the signal into my home, and if I decide I don't want it in my home anymore, I turn it off... and it stays off. In contrast, a telemarketer can reach into my house and make my phone ring. Sure I can hang up on them. But then they can call back, and the cycle begins again, invading my implied right to privacy.   We received e-mail from WPHT and have NEVER signed up for mail or anything else from them It was sent to our real life name--something we never do unless on a Secure Site--had ID Theft and are Leary of this.
  
  So, to receive this from them is a puzzle and annoying.
  Hubby doesn't even listen to talk radio--I can't stand Katz (among others) and wouldn't
  want mail from them either.
  How did they do this?? Is it Spam? (I sent to them and uce@ftc.gov)
