  Greetings talk radio nerds, it's me USAGIJOE back to ask you a question. A friend of mine who lives in the Philadelphia area is changing his auto insurance company. It seems his wife was in an accident last year, which was not her fault, and his rates skyrocketed. Since I am not from the area I told him I would ask the experts, the talk radio nerds. I remember one advertiser on WWDB who was always on Irv's show but I forgot their name. They always advertised, send for the free booklet on "What to do if you are in an accident." Any information would be helpful. Your replies may also be useful to other posters on this board who live in Pa. So the question is, Who Has The Best Rates? Thanks for your help. Hey Surf, how about an update on the old WWDB radio hosts gang, "Where are they today."

  It's a cartoon drawn by the Inquirer's Tom Auth. It was pretty harsh when seen on it's own. But when compared to 1930's Nazi propaganda, it looks, ahem, "coincidental".

• Ann Ivory's New Show -- Steve Bryant, 12:32:25 07/31/03 Thu
  I want to thank Surf for posting the audio file for Ann Ivory’s new show on WNJC. In today’s world of homogenized, sanitized-for-your-protection, right-wing claptrap radio (no strong opinions here), I think all of us who enjoy talk radio are delighted to hear something different.
  
  I do hope the show continues and possibly catches on for syndication. It reminded me a bit of The Satellite Sisters (if they were all in one studio). That’s the halcyon days of The Satellite Sisters on NPR, not the current watered-down ABC version.
  
  This being said, I have some observations: Ann and company’s first show was more than a little loose. If they rehearsed or prepped a great deal, it didn’t show. The first few seconds of a show, especially a new show, are crucial. If I had been a casual listener, I most likely would have dismissed it as a small-market, pay-for-play production.
  
  In these days where everyone is denouncing the evils of “Corporate Radio,” non-corporate radio has to be better-than-good…all the time. I think most of us would love nothing more than to see a local team of broadcasters succeed beyond the wildest dreams of Glenn Beck, Dr. Laura and all the other big money syndicated shows.
  
  Obviously, Ann is an experienced broadcaster. Her partners do a nice job as well, when they’re not stepping all over one another. This show needs serious tightening and better focus if it is going to succeed. Time and time again, I hear a local radio show debut with high hopes of national syndication. Usually, it’s 2 or more people who spend more time driving to the station than prepping their show. It usually fails rather quickly.
  
  I know for the fill-in spots I do on WDEL, I spend 3-4 hours prepping for 1 hour on-air. (Okay, so maybe I’m slow.) If Ann and her co-hosts spent a great deal of time getting ready for their debut it didn’t show in the audio file Surf posted.
  
  I love it when someone succeeds in this crazy business. Especially if that someone does it on their own without a Premier, Talk America or other big syndicator behind them. Granted, if they are really successful, they might eventually be syndicated by one of the big services. Still, they would have initially made it outside the “big money shield” of a large corporation.
  
  Like most, I cringe when I hear what passes for talent on many “big” national shows. (Is Liddy still reading the paper? Can Glenn Beck have his named screamed out a few more times each hour?...I must have missed that one in “Imaging 101.”)
  
  If “Midnight Dish” is the new name of their show (providing no one else has it already), they have a great title. I hope the show can live up to it.

    • Well this kind of posts pops up every few months or so. There IS some chatter but nothing firm. Imus is well protected by Karmizan who just resigned with Viacom.   Maybe its just me, but does anyone ever think that those who yell the loudest and longest about how radio is now safe, predictable and nonthreatening and how radio is totally beholden to corporate interests have, in reality, become the very things they most despise?
  
  Think about it, this board has BECOME radio ... think of all the parallels. I certainly can think of many. Compare what Mike Missanelli wrote about his problems at WIP in a recent Daily News op ed peice with the way stuff is deleted here to protect certain "interests".
  
  And just like the contemptutous attitude in the radio biz, the webmaster will tell us to "tune" elsewhere if we don't like it. Not the way to maintain a loyal customer base, is it? But who are the customers here? The posters or the corporate figures being coddled and protected from harsh comment?
  
  Maybe this has something to do with the fact that readership has dropped off here, much in the same way listenership has dropped off in the radio biz.
  
  Predictable, boring, and nonthreatening. Sound familiar, anyone?

  • Pretty awful! Didn’t anyone work with him before the show? He was all over the place. Sounded like he wanted to be a shock jock at times. He baited the audience on some issues like a 70’s talk host. Difficult to understand at times as well. He “tilted” at some pretty silly windmills. If Kelvin was the best, God help us all if Numbers 2 or 3 get a shift. Don’t think Beck, Doyle, Smerconish and Blazer will be serious competition for the likes of Walter Sabo, et al.   On Monday, July 21, a newscaster on West Chester radio station WCHE used the phrase “f*** you” while referring to the Kobe Bryant incident.
  
  Even though the young woman apologized for saying a word she noted “might offend some,” the fact that the station was not using a 7 second delay is inexcusable! They have a new one and never use it because of all the technical problems it creates for them.
  
  David Shurr, the owner of the station and host of the morning show told her to "watch her language" and allowed her to continue on-air. It's this kind of irresponsible broadcasting that's helping to kill local radio faster than Clear Channel or Viacom ever could!

He couldn't hear callers and it appeared to me that he didn't even know how to get calls on the show. The host was yelling, tons of feedback. It was the worst radio show I've ever heard.   It seems like every other day there's a new report of American soldiers being killed or wounded in hostile fire.
  The worst part is there's no end in sight, and no one in talk radio, at least locally, wants talk about Iraq anymore.
  
  After months of helping to drum up public support for the war, mostly by mocking anti-war protesters, the local hosts have all gone back to doing Oprah impressions (Sexy teacher contests, Do married people really have less sex?, isn't sex great?)
  
  The Bush administration continues to govern by arrogance, supplying NO information about the situation to the American people. What's the timetable for getting the troops out? What is the plan for transfer of power? Is there a plan at all, or are you just making this up as you go along? They basically just tell us peasants to "Shut up, and let the aristocracy do the ruling."
  
  The allegedly 'liberal' press corps refuses to push for answers for fear of being sent to the back of room and not being called on by Ari.
  
  Talk radio is the perfect vehicle for putting public pressure on elected officials, but they are taking a politcal pass. Aren't we still supporting the troops?

  Nevada's Judicial Dice-Throwers

  In a state that has given us the quickie divorce, legalized prostitution and gambling, you'd think it would be hard to raise eyebrows. But compared to their Supreme Court, Nevada's sin industries are looking downright respectable. In a landmark 6-to-1 ruling Thursday, Nevada's justices came up with a real doozy: Essentially they ordered state legislators to violate the state constitution they have sworn to uphold.
  
  That's the real meaning of their ruling that a Nevada constitutional amendment requiring a two-thirds majority in both state houses for any tax hike was trumped by another constitutional requirement that the state fund public education. The dubious reasoning here was that while the education requirement was "substantive" and "specific," the supermajority requirement for a tax increase was merely "procedural" and "general."
  
  Leave aside for a moment the singular idea that procedural requirements are not as essential to self- rule as other provisions. (The Federalist Papers are all about such unsubstantive "procedural" details as the separation of powers.) Or that the case can be made that it is the supermajority requirement that is specific and the education requirement that is general.
  
  This case shouldn't have been before the court at all. And it wouldn't have been had Republican Governor Kenny Guinn not taken the extraordinary step of suing his own state legislature when it refused to push through nearly $1 billion in tax increases he wanted.
  
  Yet the move has paid off for Mr. Guinn, if not for Nevada taxpayers or the cause of self-government. With his state's constitution now handily disposed of, the Governor looks set to get his way. The Assembly passed a bill Sunday that would increase taxes by a record $788 million over the next two years. Meanwhile, the only real argument in the Senate appears to be over what precise form the tax increases will take.
  
  Now, Governors feuding with legislators over budgets is nothing new. But by resorting to a judicially enforced tax decision that properly belongs to the elected representatives of the people of Nevada, the Governor and the judges have put themselves in a class all their own. At least the state's gamblers and prostitutes can claim to be working within the law.
  
  By contrast, to conduct their business Nevada's highest court and its chief executive pulled an end run around a clear constitutional imperative in order to carve out an exemption for a specific spending interest. In this case that happened to be public education. But who is to say other justices won't discover other special interests?
  
  You can bet, moreover, that spendthrifts elsewhere are watching Nevada closely. Already a spokesman for Gray Davis has told the Associated Press that a similar suit was "something that we could possibly look at in the future." So much for "of the people, by the people, and for the people."
  
  Remember them? It's not as if the people of Nevada didn't know what they were doing when they voted overwhelmingly, twice, for the supermajority tax amendment. Voters know that without some kind of discipline, politicians will always have a hard time saying no to intense spending lobbies. And Nevadans are hardly alone. Other states--Colorado, Arizona and Florida--have similar tax or spending disciplines that require either supermajorities or voter approval. Not coincidentally, they are also the states that have generally weathered the economic slowdown of the past few yearsbetter than their peers.
  
  The states facing the worst budget shortfalls tend to be those either with no tax or spending limits or limits that they've weaseled out of. California is the most notorious. What we're seeing in Nevada today is largely a replay of what led California to its present woes.
  
  After Proposition 13 in 1978, Californians also passed something called the Gann Amendment, which limited increases in state and local appropriations from tax revenue to population growth plus inflation. But voters later watered this down, allowing an exception for--you guessed it--education. As the Cato Institute points out, if California had held spending growth to the terms of the Gann Amendment, Governor Davis would not have a budget crisis today.
  
  Apart from Mr. Guinn and the teachers unions, the folks happiest about this are probably Florida's high court judges, who now have company in making a mockery of self-government. It appears Governor Guinn will now get his tax hike. But let's remember that in suing the state's legislators, he was in reality suing his own voters.

  NEW YORK - MSNBC on Monday fired Michael Savage for anti-gay comments.
  
  
  The popular radio talk show host who did a weekend TV show for the cable channel referred to an unidentified caller to his show Saturday as a "sodomite" and said he should "get AIDS and die."
  
  
  "His comments were extremely inappropriate and the decision was an easy one," MSNBC spokesman Jeremy Gaines said.
  
  
  There was no immediate comment from Savage, according to a spokesman at his office in California.
  
  
  The brash, tough-talking Savage is one of radio's hottest jocks. His Paul Revere Society advocates closing borders, deporting illegal immigrants, mandating health tests for immigrants and eliminating entitlement programs.
  
  
  The televised version of "The Savage Nation" began March 8 despite the protests of such advocacy groups as the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.
  
  
  Aired at 5 p.m. EDT Saturday, Savage didn't translate into a television hit. He increased the ratings for the time slot marginally, according to MSNBC.
  
  
  The incident that resulted in his firing began innocently enough. Savage was taking viewer phone calls about airline horror stories, and a male caller began talking about smoking in the bathroom.
  
  
  "Half an hour into the flight, I need to suggest that Don and Mike take your ..." the caller said, before he was cut off and his words became unintelligible.
  
  
  "So you're one of those sodomists. Are you a sodomite?" Savage asked.
  
  
  The caller replied: "Yes, I am."
  
  
  "Oh, you're one of the sodomites," Savage said. "You should only get AIDS and die, you pig. How's that? Why don't you see if you can sue me, you pig. You got nothing better than to put me down, you piece of garbage. You have got nothing to do today, go eat a sausage and choke on it."
  
  
  He asked for another phone caller who "didn't have a nice night in the bathhouse who's angry at me today."
  
  
  These bums "mean nothing to me," he said.
  
  
  GLAAD spokeswoman Cathy Renna said of Savage's firing: "It's about time.
  
  
  "This latest attack made the clearest case for why Savage has no place on any reputable news network. MSNBC witnessed firsthand exactly the kind of verbal assaults GLAAD's been warning them about for the past five months, and to their credit, they backed up their promises to hold Savage accountable."

  ...just getting tired of seeing that Book Banned In The USA! thread up top every time I come on here, and thought I'd do something about it.
  
  Oh, wait, here's some fodder for the Laura-haters... according to the latest Talkers Magazine, Dr. Laura has broken her tie with Howard Stern and has climbed back to the #3-rated national talk show host. (Rush and Hannity are still 1-2.) Many thought the Iraq war would damage her ratings, but apparently she saw impressive gains across the country.
  
  My take? She's still not as strong as she once was. In many markets, she's been moved to timeslots such as 6pm-9pm, when competeting stations tend to have weaker hosts. (I feel the same way about Savage; okay, his listenership is huge, but there's not nearly the level of competition at 7pm that there is at 3pm.) But those who said Dr. Laura was soon to be gone for good may have been premature.

    • If Beck's #2, then I'm #1. The Talkers article didn't mention anyone else on the list, but 4 or 5 months ago Glenn Beck was in a distant tie for 10th with the likes of Rusty Humphries. Maybe he's talking about a specific demographic. I don't have Talkers in front of me right now, but I think they were talking about 12+... that's everyone aged 12 or older.
