  Let's all bear in mind that the folks who are bringing us a "Best of" Hannity are the same folks who recently sent their listeners an email which started this way:
  
  "I'd like to talk to you about some programming changes we are making to ring in 2003. Adding more live and local programming has always been our goal at The Big Talker 1210. You've told us that you want more programming that effects your community and we've listened.."
  
  They simply don't have any idea what they are doing.

  • Since the majority of PHT's programming is syndicated, what exactly does the Program Director "direct"? It doesn't seem like a part-time job warrants a full-time salary. How do you "direct" talk talent that doesn't work for you specifically? If the PD keeps signing up more syndicated shows, she's going to program herself right out of a job.   • What WPHT is probably doing is trying to lock up Hannity so that some suburban station that might run the whole show, like WNPV for instance, doesn't beat PHT to the punch. I don't know how long PHT can get away with this with only a 2 hour commitment. Of course, PHT's suit-enforced allegiance to the low-rated Glenn Beck program has to expire sometime.....   • Hey, there've been plenty of people on here who have been complaining that WPHT doesn't have Hannity. And the guy HAS picked up 12 million listeners after just one year of syndication, which puts him on track to pass Rush in the next year or two.   Correct me if I'm wrong but is it true the CBS World news roundup does not air on a Philly infinity station? If that's the case, why? I faxed 1210 WPHT about this but I don't know if they got my fax. I think this show should air on WPHT 1210 AM live, not on tape delay.

• Missing having a local morning guy -- SurveyGuy, 22:32:30 02/21/03 Fri
  As I was changing from Imus to KYW to Jim Gearhart, I recalled that it was listening to talk radio on my drive in to work that first hooked me on talk radio. While the Imus team is very talented, it is not the kind of talk radio that hooks new loyal listeners (IMHO). Who identifies with an (apparently) antisocial guy like Imus, for example?
  
  At the time, Dominic Quinn was on, with call-ins by "Joe the Bartender" and other local characters. One got a sense of community by listening. It was adictive. We have had other good morning talk personalities since then like Paul W. Smith and Phil Valentine and some perhaps not as likeable (I won't name names).
  
  Question: Could it be that the lack of a local morning talk anchor during drive time is hurting the growth of new listeners? Am I totally off-base here and just being nostalgic or losing touch with the new reality, or have I identified a critical gap in programming? I just felt like raising this question. Any opinions?

  • I don't know if it is hurting the growth of new listeners but it is definitely destroying the sense of community that made radio talk so enticing in a previous era. You could learn things and be entertainined......by the CALLERS as well as the host.   • While I cannot say I pine for the days of Dominic Quinn, lack of a decent local morning show is, IMHO, greatly hurting any chance of WPHT ever climbing out of the doldrums it is in today.   I read some of the informed rumors on this board concerning the new syndicated program WPHT is going to "offer" (more like jam down our throats)its semi-loyal but mostly disgusted listeners and I tend to think there is a grain of truth to it all.
  
  One must become hip to the promos and "read between the lines" very much like foreign analysts had to do when reading "Pravda" when the Soviet Union was still around.
  
  This latest promo I heard touts the glories of Beck, Rush, Smerconish, Katz, and O'Reilly but no Dom. Is this the new sacrifical lamb to be slaughtered on the altar of syndication? If it is, I hope the community college gives Dom more hours. If true, what a shame.

• Radio Days -- Freddy, 19:54:52 02/24/03 Mon
  I watched Woody Allen's "Radio Days" on PBS last week and I now offer a few comments that tie in with Surf's sense of lost community due to syndication. That was one of the few Woody Allen movies I like and it is well done and very funny. You don't get the typical spoiled neurotic urbanite lemming characters so near to Hollywood's (and Allen's) heart. You get real people dealing with real problems with their radio tying them into the events of the day.
  
  True, it wasn't talk radio but a lot of it was local and they were tied into something special. That is how it used to be in Philly and the burbs when WDDB was in its glory years. Maybe not as consuming as in Allen's movie but the talk shows catered to a plugged in subset of the population who wanted to know the "inside story" before "Enquiring" minds wanted to know.
  
  As a sidebar: The funniest scene in "Radio Days" is when Woody's obese uncle went over to the neighbor's house to tell them to turn down the radio on the Sabbath and came back a converted Communist who had no use for religion. His wife thinks he is suffering from a heart attack for blaspheming God and it turns out to be indigestion. When his wife asks him what he had to eat he mentions the 4 course meal....Pork chops, oysters, french fries, chocolate cake.

  If we have to have a syndicated talk show in the morning, why not Mike Savage? I love the titles of some of the sections from his book "Savage Nation". (e.g. Elian: The Only Immigrant The Democrats Hate.......America: From the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave, to the Land of the Freak and the Home of the Slave.)
  
  No mincing of words here. Do you ever notice how Rush almost never says anything about the out-of-control illegal and legal immigration? He supports deporting and arresting terrorist cells but I don't recall ever hearing him address the current invasion of our country by air, land, and sea.
  
  Why not dump Beck and give this guy a chance? I watched "NOW"
  with Bill Moyers and he was very upset to say the least about this Mike Savage. Bill didn't think it was funny that Mr. Savage refers to Third Worlders as Turd Worlders. Lighten up Bill. Your show is well done but you won't get to Turd Base let alone make it to home plate in this world without a sense of humor.

  Listening to Rush Limbaugh on my lunchbreak, I heard a promo spot for Jeff Katz where he states that "tonight we will discuss any and all issues as we lead the charge into Iraq". We? Up until now, I've thought that this war is not a very good idea, but if Jeff Katz is "leading the charge", I may have to reconsider.
  
  Also, listening to Dom the last few nights, I heard some new station promo spots. One for president's day had a soundbite of George Bush, followed by a snippet of FDR's "fear itself" speech, followed by the announcer declaring that WPHT 'salutes our great leaders'. Uh, o..kay.
  
  Another spot features the announcer's voice proclaiming "The game is over, the clock is ticking...."
  
  Still another states "War is inevitable....." (Jesus, even the president hasn't gone THAT far, at least publicly)
  
  These spots really give me the creeps. This is way different from a host taking a position.
  
  On a hunch, I picked up a Russian-English dictionary, and sure enough, in the Cyrillic alphabet, WPHT is spelled TASS.

  I find the selection of music on the radio just as homogenous and boring as the pre-packaged selection of talk radio jammed down our throats. FM is mostly devoted to a rehash of the same 80's mix of 25 songs played in rotation or some sort of unmusical hip-hop garbage.
  
  The only thing that offers any kind of alternative is the oldies station, WPEN, and some college stations (like Temple) which offers a selection of blues and blue grass.
  
  Also, just for the hell of it, I decided to listen to the country station for any mention of Johnny Paycheck's death last night. No such luck. Modern country music like most other genres of music is a watered down cookie-cutter hybrid of pop. Whether you liked Paycheck or not, he was real. You would think they would have the decency at WXTU to at least mention his passing. In this age of predatory capitalism that is far too much to expect I guess. That half of minute mentioning Paycheck's passing could be devoted to advertising for Viagra or a vaccum pump.

  Blizzard of '03..... all of the surrounding States are in a "state of emergency". You would never know by listening to WPHT 1210AM "The BigTalker". I was curious to hear what kind of reporting would take place this morning. What did I find? A Best of Imus re-run.
  
  Well, back to the "The Morning Show" on WIP, everything is still the same at WPHT. Out of morbid curiousity, I have to turn the station back to WPHT after 9:00AM. Just to see if they have the nerve to run a Best of Beck re-run.

  All talk radio hosts use Web Sites (Drudge, etc.) and newspapers to research their shows. Many even quote their sources. But few ever read directly from the newspaper, which is not only boring it is downright illegal.
  
  As a Chester County resident and radio geek, I often check out our two local stations, WCOJ, 1420 AM and WCHE, 1520 AM, the latter being a 250-watt daytimer. Both stations must use the local newspapers for their news, but WCHE reads the stories from the paper verbatim.
  
  I happen to know that even rewriting the stories from a source without paying or permission is a copyright infringement, but reading them directly is the worst kind of “intellectual theft.” WCHE is owned by the man who does the morning show. The times I have listened (not long) it sounds very boring and the host has a Philadelphia accent thick enough to clog the Schuylkill.
  
  I know it’s only a 250-watt daytimer, but he reads stories verbatim from the Inquirer, the Chester County Local, the New York Post and others. As I know many struggling writers, it is infuriating to me that this person is reading copyrighted material word-for-word every day. The G-Man pays for his newspaper shtick, but I don’t believe WCHE is paying for using the work of others.
  
  It might seem like a small issue to some, but his kind of abuse is one of the things that’s killing good, locally owned radio. Have you heard similar occurrences on your local stations?

  Therefore, I am suggesting to Surf that this board be retired or at least shut down for a long period. Let's say 6 months. That's enough time to give all the old yentas some time to ponder what else there is to talk about other than Glen Beck sucking, Jeff Katz sucking, PHT management et al sucking. Hmm anything else?   I listened to Glenn Beck this morning and unbeknownst to him he spelled out one of the top reasons talk radio has lost much of its original attraction.
  
  Glenn wants listeners to call into his program today and tell him what they think about Powell's UN speech and the impending war with Iraq. Glenn made a huge point of how usually he isn't the least bit interested in what "Carol on the Cell Phone" or any other caller has to say. To him, talk radio is an unwritten contract between the host who explains events and his vision of the world to the listener who should be silently captivated and just listen to his brilliance.
  
  Glenn, you occasionally have some good insights but why would someone who is such a believer in the small town values of Rockwellian American dismiss potential callers to your program in such a denigrating manner?
  
  There are many callers with nothing to say, but there are some that offer info and insights that not EVEN YOU with your Wizard of OZ like omnnipotence can provide.
  
  The country has been dumbed down but there are still many intelligent people out there with something to share and they want to do it in a public forum and talk radio used to be the best forum for that sharing. The patronizing arrogance of a Beck or a Smerconish is driving the final nails into the talk radio coffin.

Yelling at the local folks about this makes about as much sense as yelling at the poor drive-thru employee at McDonald's because the corporate office discontinued your favorite milkshake flavor.   The lawyer made the comment that "Michael Jackson's behaviour was innapropriate for a man of his age" and that that was enough of a reason for someone to look into the whole situation of his sleeping with young children (unrelated to him). Her point is completely valid. It is completely irrelevent wether she is related to, is a best friend of, or has never met Michael Jackson. Her point still stands. I am amazed that someone whose very career makes her a 'center of attention' (and appears to jump at any opportunity for self promotion) could possibly accuse anyone else of doing something for media attention.

  I listened to Ceisler's show last night and besides the local people, listeners were calling from western PA, WVA, SC, etc. Whether they disagreed with Larry's positions are not they genuinely seemed glad to have the opportunity to voice their opinions on the Columbia disaster and other events which happen at break neck speed these days. (Ceisler has been off for two weeks and Dom's program has been chopped up by ball games for the last two weeks...I know most of you know this)
  
  A few of the callers even flat out voiced their discontent with WPHT's programming choices. Someone even demanded they bring Irv Homer back. What the hell is the point of having a local talk show station if the listeners cannot call into that station to discuss events as they are happening?
  
  I have my favorites when it comes to hosts, but my favorite party of talk radio is hearing the interaction, the "pulse" , (pun intended) and the views of the public vis-a-vis the immedicacy of talk radio.
  
  Do the people who run that station really think the public is stupid and jaded enough to swallow whatever stale canned goods they serve up?

  I am going to find another radio station! I work the overnight shift and depend on talk radio for intelligent information and interesting subjects. I enjoyed the different topics that Coast to Coast introduced and it made the nights go by much faster. Now WPHT has decided to run infomercials all night long! I am not kidding when I say that both Saturday and Sunday nights were boring infomercials running at half hour intervals covering everything from puny prostates, anti aging, brain enhancers, to phyto chemicals and sexual enhancers. And....when they ran out of infomercials they just replayed the same lot all over again. I can't believe it. Do they really think that regulars like me will continue to listen weekend after weekend? Not me. WPHT's pulse is weak.

Whether info's or some alien abducted, anal probed, guest on that crap to crap show ... it's enough to make suicide look good.   • Cutting off C2C at 5AM during the week (by not replaying the first hour) is also a huge mistake by WPHT. Myself, and many co-workers listened to C2C during our early morning commute.   Many of you already know that I currently live in Florida, but specifically I'm in Palm Bay, an hour's drive south of the Kennedy Space Center. I can step right out my back door to watch the shuttle launches, and the twin sonic booms from the shuttles' landing approaches often rock my apartment.

• CC Radio / Superadio Comparision -- Dan Mackey, 19:35:00 01/27/03 Mon
  I've read the section comparing the Superadio to the C Crane unit, and my experience is quite different. I do own a GE Superadio I, and the DX capability of this vintage GE radio is quite superior. Although I am writig from the Boston area, I do quite frequently tune in to KYW, WTOP and other stations in the NY/Phil/Wash area. The SuperadioI outperforms C Crane. I also have a AM transmitter about 2 miles from my home. The C Crane overloads over 30% of the dial, while the Superadio I rejects this signal. If you are looking for a radio that will handle the worst of the Philly AM signal problems, shop around (eBay, the web) for a vintage SR1. They were made in the early 90's, so they should be easy to find.

  I heard about the fairly new sports station (920 AM) in Trenton.   Wanted to throw out to the Board a question on which area talk show host they enjoy for print commentary. While Smerconish is the only one with a weekly gig, I have seen Giordano in The Inquirer on a regular basis as well as John Ziegler (both print and web-based). If you respond with a favorite, please cite why you like their writing- such as "original thought" or "takes a clear, firm stand on an issue" or "compelling writing." It would be interesting to hear specifically why you like a specific host' writing, not just because of pure fanatical adoration (like one particular fawning poster here who shall remain nameless).

You may be able to speak off the top of your head in a radio studio, but when you see a host do that in print, their written words seem to ramble on. I have not been impressed with what I've read.   Does anyone remember the name of a sports host on WWDB during the late 1970s. No, it wasn't Howard Eskin but this guy was real anti-Philadelphia sports teams.   WPHT finally came up with an acceptable candidate to host the Sunday night show. The guy is a bit green but he is polite and will let callers make their point(s) without interrupting or cutting them off prematurely.
  
  He is definitely a shill for the left wing but he makes no bones about it and that I can live with. I just hope WPHT has no plans of turning Sunday night into a male-female tag team and bring Ruby Cheeks or some other cipher back for the 4th or 5th time as Larry's other half.

  I listen to Tom Marr on WCBM in Baltimore and on WOR in NYC. Sometimes on WOR they broadcast college basketball games instead of Tom (7pm-9pm est) :(
  
  So I can't hear the show on the radio or on WOR's internet stream...however the show still goes out to unknown cities via the WOR network. Does anyone know a radio station that carries Tom Marr on WOR and streams it on their site?

  It was a mistake I know, but I left my radio on after Rush finished today (1/2/03)on the BIG SWAQ-ER and MS was doing a duelcast of his CNN Talkback show on radio.
  
  Is it just me or is doing TV on radio really anoying? Everyone was talking at the same time and it didn't make much sense...Come to think about it, didn't Irv Homer invent talking on the radio without making any sense?

  Okay, there's been a lot of talk in the past about how to fix WPHT, or about how much this town needs a second talker. And after posting my idea of what WPHT's lineup should look like (as well as the likelihood, or lack thereof, of its being implemented), I figured it might be fun to put together a theoretical lineup for a competing station, and I'm curious to see what the other would-be PDs on here would try as well.
  
  But there are a couple of ground rules that any such station would probably have to follow:
  
  1.) No Clear Channel/Premeire hosts. Clear Channel and WPHT seem joined at the hip, and CC doesn't seem to like having its own shows competing with each other.
  
  2.) No current WPHT hosts, since they probably have non-compete clauses in their contracts.
  
  So, here's my crack at it. Feel free to rip it to shreds. Based on the private e-mail I've gotten lately, that might be therapeutic for some of you.
  
  6am-10am - John Hancock (currently on WBT in Charlotte, NC)
  A sock puppet could beat Imus, but you also want someone who meshes with the rest of your lineup, and alas, Phil Valentine is firmly ensconced in Nashville. I can hear Hancock at night in Florida on WBT's signal (AM-1110 if you want to try it in Philly), and he's talented, but stuck in a bad timeslot on a station that's overstuffed with local talent. He sounds like a morning host, and he'd work here.
  
  10am-1pm - Neal Boortz (live, syndicated)
  The most underrated talker out there right now, hands-down. He's a talented, humorous Libertarian and a ratings gorilla with a history of staring down Rush in that one-hour overlap.
  
  1pm-3pm - Clark Howard (live, syndicated)
  Boortz and Howard are both owned by Cox, and taken together, they're the next-best thing to having Rush mid-days. Howard's consumer advice skews him to a female audience, good counter-programming against Rush.
  
  3pm-6pm - Sean Hannity (live, syndicated)
  This one's a no-brainer.
  
  6pm-7pm - Clark Howard (tape, syndicated)
  This would be Clark's third and final hour on tape-delay, mainly to fill time until...
  
  7pm-10pm - Michael Savage (live, syndicated)
  Personally, I hate his show, and I think his big national numbers stem mainly from the lack of competition in his timeslot. But I still can't think of anyone else I'd rather have here. It's hard to argue with his ratings.
  
  And here I get stuck. There's any number of syndicated daytime talkers that can be tape-delayed and run 10pm until 6am, but none of 'em do much for me. I'd rather split that time between two live-and-locals, but since I'm not a PD, I'm not privy to any demo tapes from around the country. So, I lack names to put here. Maybe John Ziegler, but he just moved out of Philly if I remember right, and isn't likely to move back right away.

  • The one thing I remember about Bill Figenshu is that when he was put in charge of figuring out what to do with WNEW(FM) in New York, he said that the station had no legacy since it had never lead in the rock ratings.   Dom is currently banned from this board since he pulled up to my window at McDonald's on his way to work last night and ordered a Big Mac Supersized meal... and he claims to be a Vegan! Shocking, just shocking. He gave me a puzzled look then finally recognized me ... he quickly recovered with, "It's for my producer!" ... yeah OK Dom.
  
  But anyway you can catch Dom today. What with his Inky "ink" ,,, Bucks Times, CH 10, etc. he puts in a full day.

  • You know I don't "get" why MSNBC puts on Buchanan and Press at that time of the day. Who do they think will be home to watch? Wouldn't they get higher ratings if they aired it at night?
