• Anybody catch Phil Hendrie the last couple of nights (790 WAEB 10P - 1A)? He's doing a straight show during the war, and doing a great job of it; kind of like a mellow, reasoned Michael Savage (who precedes him). If the comedy schtick 'gets old' as some here have opined, Hendrie would have no problem going straight, though he claims he doesn't like to do a straight talk show.   Several people on my 10pm to 7am shift were interested in hearing the war news on Sunday night. I suggested Drudge on WPHT. I even secretly hoped that maybe an International event like the war might inspire Miss Gracie to flush her disgusting infomercials and offer real talk radio. Every radio was tuned to PHT til Drudge went off the air. The minute the info hype introduction started the dash for the dial began. WPHT was gone. Grace, are your cheeks red yet? Wpht's coverage of the war is the absolute worst.

  In the midst of war, in the thick of drive-time, WPHT replays their Rally for the Troops...an event they did not feel it warranted to be broadcast live. Instead of getting up-to-the-minute information on the war, we get an event that was five-days old. They should have also done some editing on the rally. On Sunday before the conflict, Smerconish's "jokes" would have been acceptable, but with American marines dying this week in the war, the jokes seemed inappropriate and awfully out of place. After the first joke, the rest fell flat (Jay Leno has NOTHING to worry about), judging by the overwhelming silence. They could have run snippets through the week, but wasting nearly 90 minutes of drive time for a stale promotional event when war news was breaking at the same time is ridiculous. Who's making these decisions? Please explain the strategic rationale, because I guess I'm too stupid to realize brilliant radio management when I see it.

    • The more I hear Beck, especially at the rally, the more impressed I am. S-can Imus and see if a better lead-in might help Beck. Run a Best-of Imus on the weekend. 2-3 hours a week should do it. These are the same tired complaints about KTC, and what you need to realize is if we all crumble emotionally during tragedies like this, then the terrorists win. Listening was up overall in every hour 5a-10p, with a 24% jump 9a-4p."
  
  Hmmm. I'd love to know what the morning numbers look like. And of course the O'Reilly rerun is DOA. Nice to see 1210 put Dom on Friday night in the O'Reilly slot. They ought to move Rollye up and can O'Reilly until the war situation settles down.
  
  And the rally couldn't have hurt Beck, even if those of us who couldn't make it didn't get to hear it until Friday.

  Media Giant's Rally Sponsorship Raises Questions

  Some of the biggest rallies this month have endorsed President Bush's strategy against Saddam Hussein, and the common thread linking most of them is Clear Channel Worldwide Inc., the nation's largest owner of radio stations.
  
  In a move that has raised eyebrows in some legal and journalistic circles, Clear Channel radio stations in Atlanta, Cleveland, San Antonio, Cincinnati and other cities have sponsored rallies attended by up to 20,000 people. The events have served as a loud rebuttal to the more numerous but generally smaller anti-war rallies.
  
  The sponsorship of large rallies by Clear Channel stations is unique among major media companies, which have confined their activities in the war debate to reporting and occasionally commenting on the news. The San Antonio-based broadcaster owns more than 1,200 stations in 50 states and the District of Columbia.
  
  While labor unions and special interest groups have organized and hosted rallies for decades, the involvement of a big publicly regulated broadcasting company breaks new ground in public demonstrations.
  
  "I think this is pretty extraordinary," said former Federal Communications Commissioner Glen Robinson, who teaches law at the University of Virginia. "I can't say that this violates any of a broadcaster's obligations, but it sounds like borderline manufacturing of the news."
  
  A spokeswoman for Clear Channel said the rallies, called "Rally for America," are the idea of Glenn Beck, a Philadelphia talk show host whose program is syndicated by Premier Radio Networks, a Clear Channel subsidiary.
  
  `Just patriotic rallies'
  
  A weekend rally in Atlanta drew an estimated 20,000 people, with some carrying signs reading "God Bless the USA" and other signs condemning France and the group Dixie Chicks, one of whose members recently criticized President Bush.
  
  "They're not intended to be pro-military. It's more of a thank you to the troops. They're just patriotic rallies," said Clear Channel spokeswoman Lisa Dollinger.
  
  Rallies sponsored by Clear Channel radio stations are scheduled for this weekend in Sacramento, Charleston, S.C., and Richmond, Va. Although Clear Channel promoted two of the recent rallies on its corporate Web site, Dollinger said there is no corporate directive that stations organize rallies.
  
  "Any rallies that our stations have been a part of have been of their own initiative and in response to the expressed desires of their listeners and communities," Dollinger said.
  
  Clear Channel is by far the largest owner of radio stations in the nation. The company owned only 43 in 1995, but when Congress removed many of the ownership limits in 1996, Clear Channel was quickly on the highway to radio dominance. The company owns and operates 1,233 radio stations (including six in Chicago) and claims 100 million listeners. Clear Channel generated about 20 percent of the radio industry's $16 billion in 2001 revenues.
  
  Size sparks criticism
  
  The media giant's size also has generated criticism. Some recording artists have charged that Clear Channel's dominance in radio and concert promotions is hurting the recording industry. Congress is investigating the effects of radio consolidation. And the FCC is considering ownership rule changes, among them changes that could allow Clear Channel to expand its reach.
  
  Sen. Russell Feingold (D-Wis.) has introduced a bill that could halt further deregulation in the radio industry and limit each company's audience share and percent of advertising dollars. These measures could limit Clear Channel's meteoric growth and hinder its future profitability.
  
  Jane Kirtley, a professor of media ethics and law at the University of Minnesota, said the company's support of the Bush administration's policy toward Iraq makes it "hard to escape the concern that this may in part be motivated by issues that Clear Channel has before the FCC and Congress."
  
  Dollinger denied there is a connection between the rallies and the company's pending regulatory matters.
  
  Rick Morris, an associate professor of communications at Northwestern University, said these actions by Clear Channel stations are a logical extension of changes in the radio industry over the last 20 years, including the blurring of lines between journalism and entertainment.
  
  From a business perspective, Morris said, the rallies are a natural fit for many stations, especially talk-radio stations where hosts usually espouse politically conservative views.
  
  "Nobody should be surprised by this," Morris said.
  
  In 1987 the FCC repealed the Fairness Doctrine, which required broadcasters to cover controversial issues in their community and to do so by offering balancing views. With that obligation gone, Morris said, "radio can behave more like newspapers, with opinion pages and editorials."
  
  "They've just begun stretching their legs, being more politically active," Morris said.

  Yes, everyone (in this country anyway) has the right to protest, but I -

  Although the significance of the red, white and blue of our flag have
  been debated through the years, in 1782, the Congress of the
  Confederation gave the following definitions for the red, white and
  blue of the Great Seal of the United States: white for purity and
  innocence, red for valor and hardiness, blue for vigilance,
  perseverance, and justice.
  
  Next Friday, March 28th, support our troops and our nation by wearing
  or displaying the colors of our country and our flag proudly. Most
  places of business host casual days on Fridays, so it really is the
  perfect day.
  
  Spread the word. Send this e-mail to everyone. Call your friends and
  family. Call and e-mail radio and TV stations.
  
  If you have friends or relatives currently serving, tell them what we
  are doing. Let them know that the MAJORITY of AMERICANS and FREEDOM-
  LOVING people in the WORLD support them NOW AND ALWAYS.
  
  Break out the colors. Break out the flags. Break the efforts of the
  protesters.

  PHT must be thanking their lucky stars. When the news broke that the U.S. had begun military operations around 9:30, it was sheer luck that they had a live host, Dom Giordano, who continued with coverage until 12 midnight. It would have been embarassing if it had started around, say 10:20 when they would have been running the taped version of the Bill O'Reilly program. It just re-enforces in my mind the stupidity of running a taped, syndicated program. During a crisis where listeners want breaking news, you're serving up stale radio leftovers. Like the Space Shuttle Columbia tragedy, it shows how vulnerable WPHT is when it comes to breaking news. With their minor market approach, a competitor could come in and quickly exploit their many weak points.

  Why? I will be moving to Lakeland, Florida. I have to relocate if I want a job with the Fortune 500 defense contractor that employs me. I will be moving down there sometime in mid-March. I’ve lived in this area for 6 years and loved Philly talk radio. On my way to Florida, I bring with me fond memories of Phil Valentine, Irv Homer, Dom. G, Tom Marr, Susan Bray, Kent Voss, John Ziegler, Jeff Katz (underrated and under appreciated), and Michael Smerconish (overrated but still good). I hope I can find a radio station that carries Howard Stern and Phil Hendrie (both shows I first heard in Philly). I also want to thank the almighty webmaster “Surf” for this website. It was ALWAYS the place to go to if you wanted the scoop on Philly talk radio! I probably will stop visiting this website as I won’t know what is going on in Philly talk radio. I know Jeff Katz claims that WPHT can be picked up in 38 states but I doubt Florida is one of them.

  • You CAN pick up WPHT in Florida sometimes, but most nights it's drowned out by a Miami station on the same frequency. You'll find Stern and Hendrie both on Real Radio 104.1-FM, one of three Orlando talkers. (The others are AM-540 and AM-580.) There's also a talker in Lakeland, but I've seen their lineup: all syndicated, all the time. Bleah. Stick to the Orlando stations, and you'll be fine.   As I was changing from Imus to KYW to Jim Gearhart, I recalled that it was listening to talk radio on my drive in to work that first hooked me on talk radio. While the Imus team is very talented, it is not the kind of talk radio that hooks new loyal listeners (IMHO). Who identifies with an (apparently) antisocial guy like Imus, for example?
  
  At the time, Dominic Quinn was on, with call-ins by "Joe the Bartender" and other local characters. One got a sense of community by listening. It was adictive. We have had other good morning talk personalities since then like Paul W. Smith and Phil Valentine and some perhaps not as likeable (I won't name names).
  
  Question: Could it be that the lack of a local morning talk anchor during drive time is hurting the growth of new listeners? Am I totally off-base here and just being nostalgic or losing touch with the new reality, or have I identified a critical gap in programming? I just felt like raising this question. Any opinions?

  I read some of the informed rumors on this board concerning the new syndicated program WPHT is going to "offer" (more like jam down our throats)its semi-loyal but mostly disgusted listeners and I tend to think there is a grain of truth to it all.
  
  One must become hip to the promos and "read between the lines" very much like foreign analysts had to do when reading "Pravda" when the Soviet Union was still around.
  
  This latest promo I heard touts the glories of Beck, Rush, Smerconish, Katz, and O'Reilly but no Dom. Is this the new sacrifical lamb to be slaughtered on the altar of syndication? If it is, I hope the community college gives Dom more hours. If true, what a shame.

  I watched Woody Allen's "Radio Days" on PBS last week and I now offer a few comments that tie in with Surf's sense of lost community due to syndication. That was one of the few Woody Allen movies I like and it is well done and very funny. You don't get the typical spoiled neurotic urbanite lemming characters so near to Hollywood's (and Allen's) heart. You get real people dealing with real problems with their radio tying them into the events of the day.
  
  True, it wasn't talk radio but a lot of it was local and they were tied into something special. That is how it used to be in Philly and the burbs when WDDB was in its glory years. Maybe not as consuming as in Allen's movie but the talk shows catered to a plugged in subset of the population who wanted to know the "inside story" before "Enquiring" minds wanted to know.
  
  As a sidebar: The funniest scene in "Radio Days" is when Woody's obese uncle went over to the neighbor's house to tell them to turn down the radio on the Sabbath and came back a converted Communist who had no use for religion. His wife thinks he is suffering from a heart attack for blaspheming God and it turns out to be indigestion. When his wife asks him what he had to eat he mentions the 4 course meal....Pork chops, oysters, french fries, chocolate cake.

  If we have to have a syndicated talk show in the morning, why not Mike Savage? I love the titles of some of the sections from his book "Savage Nation".   No mincing of words here. Do you ever notice how Rush almost never says anything about the out-of-control illegal and legal immigration? He supports deporting and arresting terrorist cells but I don't recall ever hearing him address the current invasion of our country by air, land, and sea.
  
  Why not dump Beck and give this guy a chance? I watched "NOW"
  with Bill Moyers and he was very upset to say the least about this Mike Savage. Bill didn't think it was funny that Mr. Savage refers to Third Worlders as Turd Worlders. Lighten up Bill. Your show is well done but you won't get to Turd Base let alone make it to home plate in this world without a sense of humor.

  Listening to Rush Limbaugh on my lunchbreak, I heard a promo spot for Jeff Katz where he states that "tonight we will discuss any and all issues as we lead the charge into Iraq". We? Up until now, I've thought that this war is not a very good idea, but if Jeff Katz is "leading the charge", I may have to reconsider.
  
  Also, listening to Dom the last few nights, I heard some new station promo spots. One for president's day had a soundbite of George Bush, followed by a snippet of FDR's "fear itself" speech, followed by the announcer declaring that WPHT 'salutes our great leaders'. Uh, o..kay.
  
  Another spot features the announcer's voice proclaiming "The game is over, the clock is ticking...."
  
  Still another states "War is inevitable....." (Jesus, even the president hasn't gone THAT far, at least publicly)
  
  These spots really give me the creeps. This is way different from a host taking a position.
  
  On a hunch, I picked up a Russian-English dictionary, and sure enough, in the Cyrillic alphabet, WPHT is spelled TASS.

  I find the selection of music on the radio just as homogenous and boring as the pre-packaged selection of talk radio jammed down our throats. FM is mostly devoted to a rehash of the same 80's mix of 25 songs played in rotation or some sort of unmusical hip-hop garbage.
  
  The only thing that offers any kind of alternative is the oldies station, WPEN, and some college stations (like Temple) which offers a selection of blues and blue grass.
  
  Also, just for the hell of it, I decided to listen to the country station for any mention of Johnny Paycheck's death last night. No such luck. Modern country music like most other genres of music is a watered down cookie-cutter hybrid of pop. Whether you liked Paycheck or not, he was real. You would think they would have the decency at WXTU to at least mention his passing. In this age of predatory capitalism that is far too much to expect I guess. That half of minute mentioning Paycheck's passing could be devoted to advertising for Viagra or a vaccum pump.

  All talk radio hosts use Web Sites (Drudge, etc.) and newspapers to research their shows. Many even quote their sources. But few ever read directly from the newspaper, which is not only boring it is downright illegal.
  
  As a Chester County resident and radio geek, I often check out our two local stations, WCOJ, 1420 AM and WCHE, 1520 AM, the latter being a 250-watt daytimer. Both stations must use the local newspapers for their news, but WCHE reads the stories from the paper verbatim.
  
  I happen to know that even rewriting the stories from a source without paying or permission is a copyright infringement, but reading them directly is the worst kind of “intellectual theft.” WCHE is owned by the man who does the morning show. The times I have listened (not long) it sounds very boring and the host has a Philadelphia accent thick enough to clog the Schuylkill.
  
  I know it’s only a 250-watt daytimer, but he reads stories verbatim from the Inquirer, the Chester County Local, the New York Post and others. As I know many struggling writers, it is infuriating to me that this person is reading copyrighted material word-for-word every day. The G-Man pays for his newspaper shtick, but I don’t believe WCHE is paying for using the work of others.
  
  It might seem like a small issue to some, but his kind of abuse is one of the things that’s killing good, locally owned radio. Have you heard similar occurrences on your local stations?

  I listened to Glenn Beck this morning and unbeknownst to him he spelled out one of the top reasons talk radio has lost much of its original attraction.
  
  Glenn wants listeners to call into his program today and tell him what they think about Powell's UN speech and the impending war with Iraq. Glenn made a huge point of how usually he isn't the least bit interested in what "Carol on the Cell Phone" or any other caller has to say. To him, talk radio is an unwritten contract between the host who explains events and his vision of the world to the listener who should be silently captivated and just listen to his brilliance.
  
  Glenn, you occasionally have some good insights but why would someone who is such a believer in the small town values of Rockwellian American dismiss potential callers to your program in such a denigrating manner?
  
  There are many callers with nothing to say, but there are some that offer info and insights that not EVEN YOU with your Wizard of OZ like omnnipotence can provide.
  
  The country has been dumbed down but there are still many intelligent people out there with something to share and they want to do it in a public forum and talk radio used to be the best forum for that sharing. The patronizing arrogance of a Beck or a Smerconish is driving the final nails into the talk radio coffin.

  The lawyer made the comment that "Michael Jackson's behaviour was innapropriate for a man of his age" and that that was enough of a reason for someone to look into the whole situation of his sleeping with young children (unrelated to him). Her point is completely valid. It is completely irrelevent wether she is related to, is a best friend of, or has never met Michael Jackson. Her point still stands. I am amazed that someone whose very career makes her a 'center of attention' (and appears to jump at any opportunity for self promotion) could possibly accuse anyone else of doing something for media attention.

  I listened to Ceisler's show last night and besides the local people, listeners were calling from western PA, WVA, SC, etc. Whether they disagreed with Larry's positions are not they genuinely seemed glad to have the opportunity to voice their opinions on the Columbia disaster and other events which happen at break neck speed these days. (Ceisler has been off for two weeks and Dom's program has been chopped up by ball games for the last two weeks...I know most of you know this)
  
  A few of the callers even flat out voiced their discontent with WPHT's programming choices. Someone even demanded they bring Irv Homer back. What the hell is the point of having a local talk show station if the listeners cannot call into that station to discuss events as they are happening?
  
  I have my favorites when it comes to hosts, but my favorite party of talk radio is hearing the interaction, the "pulse" , (pun intended) and the views of the public vis-a-vis the immedicacy of talk radio.
  
  Do the people who run that station really think the public is stupid and jaded enough to swallow whatever stale canned goods they serve up?

  I am going to find another radio station! I work the overnight shift and depend on talk radio for intelligent information and interesting subjects. I enjoyed the different topics that Coast to Coast introduced and it made the nights go by much faster. Now WPHT has decided to run infomercials all night long! I am not kidding when I say that both Saturday and Sunday nights were boring infomercials running at half hour intervals covering everything from puny prostates, anti aging, brain enhancers, to phyto chemicals and sexual enhancers. And....when they ran out of infomercials they just replayed the same lot all over again. I can't believe it. Do they really think that regulars like me will continue to listen weekend after weekend? Not me. WPHT's pulse is weak.

  • Cutting off C2C at 5AM during the week (by not replaying the first hour) is also a huge mistake by WPHT. Myself, and many co-workers listened to C2C during our early morning commute.   Many of you already know that I currently live in Florida, but specifically I'm in Palm Bay, an hour's drive south of the Kennedy Space Center. I can step right out my back door to watch the shuttle launches, and the twin sonic booms from the shuttles' landing approaches often rock my apartment.

• CC Radio / Superadio Comparision -- Dan Mackey, 19:35:00 01/27/03 Mon
  I've read the section comparing the Superadio to the C Crane unit, and my experience is quite different. I do own a GE Superadio I, and the DX capability of this vintage GE radio is quite superior. Although I am writig from the Boston area, I do quite frequently tune in to KYW, WTOP and other stations in the NY/Phil/Wash area. The SuperadioI outperforms C Crane. I also have a AM transmitter about 2 miles from my home. The C Crane overloads over 30% of the dial, while the Superadio I rejects this signal. If you are looking for a radio that will handle the worst of the Philly AM signal problems, shop around (eBay, the web) for a vintage SR1. They were made in the early 90's, so they should be easy to find.

  Wanted to throw out to the Board a question on which area talk show host they enjoy for print commentary. While Smerconish is the only one with a weekly gig, I have seen Giordano in The Inquirer on a regular basis as well as John Ziegler (both print and web-based). If you respond with a favorite, please cite why you like their writing- such as "original thought" or "takes a clear, firm stand on an issue" or "compelling writing." It would be interesting to hear specifically why you like a specific host' writing, not just because of pure fanatical adoration (like one particular fawning poster here who shall remain nameless).

You may be able to speak off the top of your head in a radio studio, but when you see a host do that in print, their written words seem to ramble on. I have not been impressed with what I've read.       • Think back twenty years. There were very few mediums on which to place talent. Therefore, you had the best available. For example, how many Lettermans and Leno's are there in America? Not many! Another example is professional sports. Over saturation of teams lead to a bad product. It's really just that simple. The best example is news.       • By listing most of their lineup, you've stated the problem pretty clearly. I think that "could their numbers be worse?" is the wrong question. The real question is: "shouldn't the numbers be a lot better?" Seems to me that if MAS is batting 6th or 7th, you've probably got a pretty good lineup.         • Keep in mind the subject of the message I was responding to. Helene was expressing sympathy for the sales staff having to try to sell Imus & Beck. I was pointing out that they still have plenty of other "sellable" hosts, and in that context, things COULD be a lot worse. But ratings-wise, you're absolutely right. Infinity should NOT be happy.
