Subject: WPHT Dodges a Bullet on War Night

PHT must be thanking their lucky stars. When the news broke that the U.S. had begun military operations around 9:30, it was sheer luck that they had a live host, Dom Giordano, who continued with coverage until 12 midnight. It would have been embarassing if it had started around, say 10:20 when they would have been running the taped version of the Bill O'Reilly program. It just re-enforces in my mind the stupidity of running a taped, syndicated program. During a crisis where listeners want breaking news, you're serving up stale radio leftovers. Like the Space Shuttle Columbia tragedy, it shows how vulnerable WPHT is when it comes to breaking news. With their minor market approach, a competitor could come in and quickly exploit their many weak points.

I turned the radio on at about 10:15, I was shocked to hear Dom's voice. I thought they had scrapped O'Reilly and brought Dom back. Didn't know until now, they lucked out. My father used to say.... "Every now and then, a blind hog will find an acorn."

[> That's nothing ... Imagine if the war had started on a weekend! They'd be stuck with a lawyer, a financial consultant, or an Itialian music host responsible for their war coverage. I guess they could just punt and simulcast sister KYW(AM), but, hey, where's the money in that? -- Scott Tilde, 20:29:56 03/20/03 Thu
