While liberals and conservatives are arguing the necessity of bringing "freedom" to the people of Iraq, the people of the United States are rapidly losing OUR OWN freedoms.

Last week, a federal judge BANNED A BOOK! Irwin Schiff's book "The Federal Mafia: How It Illegally Imposes And Unlawfully Collects Income Taxes" is now a BANNED BOOK, courtesy of our government, which claims that he is teaching American citizens how to break the law, when he's really trying to teach them the TRUTH about the "law"!

At http://www.paynoincometax.com you can check out the details for yourself. And to the moderators: this is not an advertising ploy for him to sell his material. He's been barred from doing that as well (except for "The Complete Internal Revenue Code"). On the site you can hear recordings of Irwin Schiff's court hearings where he practically BEGS the judge to let him cross examine, under oath, the IRS attorneys as to the legality of the Federal Statutes which supposedly require Americans to file a return, or pay an "Income Tax". THE JUDGE DID NOT DO THIS! What does that tell you?

You can also read about how Irwin appeared at the Toledo Law School and offered $50,000 to any law professor or law student who could identify a law that requires any individual to pay the "Income Tax".         It might help if you actually gave us some law numbers so we could look this up more easily. For example, when I was on the air on WMEL and was challenging a local candidate's eligibility to run for office, I was very careful to cite specific laws from the Florida state code, and to give the requisite code numbers so that my listeners could follow-up on their own. Surf has posted on the front page a pretty revealing article about the Infinity / AOL for Broadband partnership and what's expected of on-air personalities. Hosts are being "encouraged" to slip in mentions of what a wonderful service AOL for Broadband is, but make sure it doesn't sound like a commercial.

So, while Glen Macnow was talking movies on WIP Friday night, he just happened to remember a very interesting feature on Arnold Schwarzenegger that he just happened to see on AOL for broadband earlier in the day. Gee, what a great service!

I'd expected the unprincipled bunch at PHT to play ball, but...... Et tu Macnow?

It's been noted here that in recent weeks that Jeff Katz has done at least two "interviews" which were not interviews at all, but commercials in disguise.

Infinity Radio pre-empted part of Smerconish's show last week for a Hillary Clinton interview, which really amounted to a commercial for sister company Simon & Shuster.

Now that Irv Homer is enjoying retirement, is there anyone left in radio with a watt of integrity? MAS once quit a gig across town over the issue of infomercials. Where is he on these latest insults? Hello? Michael? I guess his fighting
spirit has been crushed beneath the massive weight of his paycheck.

Leading up to the latest FCC regulation loosening, there was comment on this page that it would not be the death of radio. Once upon a time, the coming of TV was proclaimed to be the end of radio, etc. I agree with that. Regulation loosening alone would not kill radio.

What might kill radio (at least the sort of talk radio to which this page is devoted) is the complete absence of anything resembling basic human integrity.

Here's what these geniuses who run the industry, both locally and nationally don't seem to have clue about: When the line between what is a commercial and what is not becomes blurred, everything a talk-host says becomes suspect. Every subject they choose to talk about (or to not
talk about) is tarred with the cynical brush of cold business calculation. And everything talked about on radio becomes COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT TO EVERYONE!

Self-marginalization, that could kill talk radio. How ironic.

Irv Homer use to say "follow the money trail." Bernie McCain would admonish that if "you want to understand what's happening on the front page,you better start by reading the business page."

- Irv did tons on infomercials at WWDB, so he hardly took what I would call "a noble stand" on infomercials. As a matter of fact, he still does them on WBCB.   - Perhaps we hear different stations, but Philly's the only market where I've heard the first-string day-to-day hosts forced to do infomercials during their normal timeslots. But if you're correct, then the current, steady growth of talk-radio is short-lived indeed. These hosts need to realize that, long-term, they're selling themselves right out of a job and guaranteeing their stations will flip to country oldies or whatever passes for AM music radio today. After going a couple weeks without having talk radio on at all, I finally tuned in the other day and its really something you should all do - it really makes you see how its almost like a joke, as you think... "this can't be for real"

What's funny (or sad) is as you listen, it makes you think how it all sounds like an infomercial with the callers that do get through saying their political version of, "WOW you mean I can get both tubes of ear wax cleaner for 19.95!" Anything to agree with the host or his agenda.

So my question is, as I've finally given up on WABC here in NYC, is XM any better? I asked one guy I know that has it, and he said he got it for the sports programing (which to me is worse then listening to infomercials, but that's another story! LOL)

I'm curious not only from a talk radio aspect, but for music too (as I agree that's almost as bad as the various talk formats are)

For the first time I've heard a radio host on WPHT address (sort of) the pending stripping of any regulations controlling the avarice of American Corporate Communications conglomerates which is turning radio into a homogeneous commercial mess with little accountability to the American public.

Dom (somewhat cowardly....but at least he put his foot in the door) wanted to know why the NRA would oppose the pending lifting of nearly all meaningful regulations as applied to radio. He had to frame the argument in this manner so he could even talk about it on the BIG TALKER.

Dom made the case that the public votes with their radio dials and all the other tired inapplicable platitudes that people who earn paychecks in places like he does invariably offer when it comes to opposing the corporate party line.

Dom, I really don't know the reason the NRA is opposing the pending FCC regulations letting corporate America operate with impunity in the communications industry. I 'll have to research this subject further.

All I can explain is why I oppose them. Philadelphia used to have two big talkers before the greedy owners of WWDB found it easier to format that station as another one of the endless list of FM stations that offers the same 30 song play list from the 1980's. FM radio is dead. There is no accountability to the public. Does the entire radio listening audience of Philadelphia tune in to listen to the same 30 songs played by all 150 (a little poetic license taken) "Best of the 80's stations? I think not.

There is also diminishing choices on AM. Your station for example. We are getting the same diet of infomercials and canned talk that made WWDB such a joke in its last couple of years.

No matter how you cut it, Clear Channel and similar conglomerates have a choke hold over any diversity (yes, I hate the word diversity too but it applies in this circumstance) concerning music or talk programming.

Your station Dom, has turned into crap. You and Katz were the last hold outs and I find myself turned off more and more at the subjects you two raise and DON'T raise.

One more thing Dom, let the occasional caller with something to share get more than 2 sentences out of his mouth before you offer your restated position. You used to have an edge but lately you sound desperate. Maybe it is a result of the restrictions placed on you by the conglomerates that control radio.

I think it's really sad that liberal papers are trying to make Glenn Beck's rallies into something sinister. That is so absurd. It's pretty obvious that they are pro-America/pro-troop rallies, intended to make us stand together as Americans in support of our American troops over in Iraq. How is it possible that they could be misconstued as anything else? I think the liberals themselves always have ulterior motives, so they think conservatives must have ulterior motives too, when in fact, we simply love our country, love our president, and love our troops who went over there to stop Saddam Hussein from defying us and the U.N., and in turn, we liberated the Iraqi people. D & M are just now whining that their ratings fell from a 3.6 to a 2.3 share. Tim S. at WYSP is rumored to be thinking of canning them come September.

To this I say, "Good Riddance"! I can't get WPHT at work in Salem, so I listen to D & M. They are mediocre at best. A few times their show makes me "chuckle". Few times is makes me laugh, and NEVER does it make me crack up.

Once out of work, it is Smerconish and Jeff K. to take me home.

My dream would be for 'YSP to dump D & M and offer O & A that slot. I believe a major reason why D & M are failing in Philly is because so many O & A fans still exist and feel the D n M show is inferior to O n A.

I will now sit back and wait for the thrashing I am going to receive.

Glenn isn't meant to be meaty. He's the everyday man talking to the everyday listener about topics we all think about and he just discusses them in a light manner, adding some humor too. I like the fact that he seems to have strong values, seems to love his country and is trying to appeal to his audience to help our country be the best we can be. It's a fun and crazy show.

With the upcoming FCC ruling getting closer and closer, there are just a ton of articles going around. Here's one that I think is especially good - in that it's not so much concerned with the idea of limiting views, but of just the overall quality. Even the major player in nationwide operations in other businesses (take for example Wal-Mart) lets the local managers cater the local outlet to cater to the local area - but that doesn't seem to be the case in radio.

The Army is looking into Private Lynch's inability to remember anything between the ambush and her rescue. I talked about this with a radio friend today and how it was curious. She told me I would look "unpatriotic" if I posted it. Why? Is image, and the celebration of it, more important than the truth? I sure hope the popular account, none of it written by anybody there or with her input, is true and she is a genuine heroine ... of sorts. If not, well then that would suck wouldn't it.

Thank the lord for the internet...and I saw this application coming many years ago...local radio stations have a new way to attract revenue, if they play their cards right. Using the internet has opened up doors for me as local radio person, programming different formats. I am using radio as the key tool in keeping the image of what I do in entertainment marketing, and that is my OOT( OUT ON THE TOWN ENTERTAINMENT NEWS...) and now, the door has opened for me all over the country, because of the interent and archiving radio programs to be heard at any time via the interent. This has really opened up my visibility factor not only here in the PHILLY and SOUTH JERSEY AREAS but from all over the country and from different parts of the world. Following up on Tuesday's Lorillard tobacco infomercial,
Jeff Katz had Steven Brill as a guest on Wednesday night's show.

It was another of those strange little 5-6 minute interviews
where no calls are taken, just like the Lorillard episode. Also like the Lorillard infomercial, Katz stroked Brill to the point of being embarrassing for the listener. (I don't think Katz himself has the capacity for shame or embarrassment.)

At first glance, this seems like another day on talk radio. Brill has a new book out, and is a perfectly legitimate guest for a talk radio show. So why the kid gloves? Why the very short interview? Why no calls from listeners?

Brill's book is published by Simon & Schuster, the publishing arm of Viacom, owner of Infinity radio. Oh. Now it's pretty clear what that's about.

Katz' show is now just one long commercial. Does Katz REALLY like Brill's book? Does he REALLY support Lorillard's efforts to kill tobacco taxes? We'll never know because his opinions are bought and paid for. Jeff Katz is for sale.

Given the Brill/Viacom incident, I doubt we'll be hearing Katz or any of the other hosts say much about the evils of media consolidation, and the FCC's pending business .

Last night, Jeff Katz had a guest from a group called No Tax, No Crime. It's a group that's opposed to ciggarette taxes, especially the steep New York City taxes. Jeff's guest discussed how the tax benefits organized crime, and hurts small business. I honestly don't know enough about the
issue to say that his arguments were valid or not. Here's the problem:

No Tax No Crime is an arm of the Lorillard Tobacco Co. They've been involved in a media blitz the past few weeks for their anti-tax campaign. Don't you think that Jeff might have mentioned that? As a caller pointed out several
minutes later, Katz presented a paid spokesman for a tobacco company as if he were just doing an interview with a newsmaker. Katz denied that they are a front for a tobacco company, saying that they "get some funding" from Lorillard. I guess Jeff's math skills need some work. 100% is more than "some".

That's bad enough, but it gets worse.

As part of their media blitz, No Tax No Crime has bought time on WPHT. Their spots have been running for at least several days. The spots at least carry the disclaimer "paid for by Lorillard Tobacco Company", which is more context than Katz was willing to provide his audience with. But the buy raises this question:

Just what in the hell did we hear last night at 7:00? Was it an interview, or a paid infomercial with no disclaimer? Are there any ethical standards at PHT? Can we trust the sincerity of anything being discussed, or are the hosts opinions up for the hightest bid? Remember PHT hosts, before you criticize the New York Times for their ethics, take it look in your own nicotine stained mirror.

I used to love this show. But today they named far right-wing radio talking-head Mike Savage "Paisan of the week". Savage (of "Savage Nation") is an extreme right wing maniac. He's a racist who often uses terms like "turd world people" to describe the Third World's poor and destitute. He is intolerant, offensive and at profound odds with the proud Christian and democratic traditions and ideals of the Italian-American community. Because of their shameless support for this fringe element I do not think I will be listening to "Bocci Alley" anymore.

Here in my current home of Palm Bay, Florida, we had a special election for a vacant City Council seat on Tuesday. Sleep-deprived-me woke up late for work on Tuesday and almost decided not to vote. But then I figured, hey, I'm late anyway, so 10 more minutes won't matter, and I cast my vote.

I'm glad I did: my guy won by 2 votes. If 2 other people had decided voting wasn't worth the effort, some total lightweight would've won instead.

The lesson? If you're a conservative, think about how much good you can do as one person by voting. And if you're a liberal, think about how much good you can do by staying home.

Okay, okay, just kidding. ;] But seriously folks, vote!

Check out Laura Ingraham's radio show. Pretty funny, very insightful. They really like to bash Senator Byrd.

In a few hours, listeners of WPHT will learn what�s on the embarrassing tape that Michael Smerconish mentioned on yesterday�s show and today�s promos. He said something like, �As some of you may know, a tape has surfaced that has my voice on it. This tape is embarrassing to the station, my show and me. I wanted to get ahead of this one and be the one to tell you about. I checked with station lawyers and they�ve topple me I can do it. Make sure you�re tuned in at this time (5PM) tomorrow.�

While the most adamant Smerconish bashers are hoping the tape has his voice urging Mayor Street to use the �entry device,� or some other incriminating utterances, this is probably another hoax or hyperbole. It�s very reminiscent of the April Fool�s gag and other bits of business he has done in an attempt to be funny.

Add the fact that today (Thursday, April 17) starts the new rating book and you have a formula for an on-air prank, a ratings booster, a tune in factor.

They are running promos, so there has to be a tape. Best guess? It�s a teen-aged Michael singing �Roundabout� along with the stereo, or some similarly �embarrassing� childhood moment. He just visited his old high school. And �checking with the lawyers� could mean getting clearance to play a piece of music or a tape containing voices other than his.

Given the debacle of the April Fool�s prank and especially the subsequent mocking of his listeners the next day, this is a very risky stunt. How will you feel if you alter your schedule to be near a radio, only to hear an off-key version of �Starship Trooper� or some other similar nonsense? Like me, you�ll be incensed.

If this is a serious issue and he�s being a stand-up guy, he deserves a lot of credit. Nobody died and made me �the knower of all things� (Irv Homer�s still alive). I admit I might be wrong about this. Still, with the ratings book starting today and a history of ill-conceived stunts�

Did anybody read the "City Paper" article last week on how blacks and whites differ on their support of the Iraqi war, featuring comments by Reggie Bryant and Dom G.? A word about WHAT. Reggie Bryant has some brains but he is clearly a race baiter. Karen Warrington is a functional illiterate who specializes in prefacing every remark with "in terms of" to give her the false veneer of having acquired some degree of formal education. And Mary Mason, what else can you conclude except that she is a social retard and stupid?

Rollye James has set a tentative starting date for her new syndicated show, Monday, June 2nd. Direct quote from her website: "If you're not hearing me now (either on WPHT or online) it's a good bet you will be in a couple of months," thus implying an extensive rollout, which in turn implies a major network behind her syndication. That's it - because of this self righteous blowhard I finally had to take 1210 off the pre-set on my stereo at home. His show already is pretty unbearable to begin with. Who needs this morning zoo type moron talking down to us??How the hell did HE get syndicated?? But the final straw is his long extended over dramatic pauses....jeez I work nights and I go to bed about 5 or 6 in the morning...sometimes I wake up and turn on the stereo right above my my head and when I hear silence, naturally being half asleep I turn the volume all the way up - then this idiot's voice blasts me right off the bed. So 1210 will NOT be heard when I am home...not like I am missing anything anyway. I basically agree with the viewpoint of everybody on the station regarding the war in Iraq but it is BORING just hearing the same viewpoint all day long. Glenn Beck is easily the worst on the station but with the exception of Rollye James the rest of the station is a joke too.

- Probably because, as a Libertarian, he feels a closer affinity to Republicans than Democrats. Democrats are never going to pay Libertarians heed. Republicans occasionally do. I was wondering how long it would take, but sure as two comes after one, now Bush is holding his 6 shooter by his side, and talking tough to Syria. Oh the joy. no one like Saddam (even Bin Laden) and just about the whole world is happy to see him gone, but what about Syria? What will the world say to this talk coming from Bush now?
