In reply to: "Vince from Villanova" 's message, "The Romans had slaves back around the birth of Christ. To say Africa taught Europe about slavery is reverse historical revisionism. Europe was well aware of the concept of slavery; they simply didn't have the power to enslave anyone until the 1500s or so. What IS true is that victorious African tribes were more than willing to sell off their defeated enemies to the Europeans. Plenty of hands, both black and white, carry the blood of this historical travesty." on 01:08:18 09/14/02 Sat

Human society started in Africa with the Mesopotamians, Hittites, Assyrians etc. They had slaves I think. Hell the Pyramids were built by slaves way before the Romans came along.

[> [> [> [> [> [> Blitz, you should follow your own advice, Vince and Grinch are bother correct. Egyptian and the Assyrian societies predated the classic Roman era by a couple thousand years. The truth is THEY ALL USED SLAVE LABOR! So if one did it before the other is not the point here. The point is that slavery didn't begin with Europeans in the exapnsion to the New World. Some anti-western European revisonist historians fail to point that out. -- Mary Katherine, 13:41:25 09/14/02 Sat

[> [> [> [> [> I think you're kinda proving my point, actually. The concept of slavery seems almost instinctive in mankind, and it's an instinct that we as a species are still trying to overcome. It's also an instinct that crosses all color boundaries; no one civilization or race "taught" anyone else about slavery. -- "Vince from Villanova", 14:10:31 09/14/02 Sat
