Subject: What does it mean to be a hero?
In reply to: e_mc2 's message, "Well, I think my concern has more to do with other POWs" on 13:13:34 04/07/03 Mon

I don't know the details, so I don't know if she was a hero. But I recall my dad, an career air force pilot who flew in combat in Vietname, and flew rescue missions, would often get annoyed when POW's, or downed pilots, were treated as heroes. His point was, "The hero is the one who completes his mission." It may sound cold, but the point is that, yes, the serviceman/woman deserves our respect and appreciation for risking his or her life, but it's not heroic, necessarily, to get captured or shot down. The heros are the soldiers who RESCUED her!
