I fully believe that machines will one day have the ability to do as you say. But so far, fictional characters aren't good enough.

As to Arrakis. The Harkonnens had full control of it, yet they tortured and killed Fremen on sight. Why? Pure lust for it maybe. Resources played little part. I will admit that resources are an underlying factor for the vast majority of wars. But, I can also kill you because I don't like the color of shoes your wearing. Was the sniper in D.C. doing it for resources? Did Hitler really need the whole planet? No. But he wanted it. Did he really need everyone to be white? No. But he wanted it.

Anyway, There will always be war. I am not really debating the reasons for war, only stating that it will always be. Even if there are many galaxies to move into.
