okay, I'll stick my neck out (ready for a good laugh ?).

I'm learning too and new at it. I bought the book "Monster Scales" by Dave Celentano and learned all 5 positions and the associated finger patterns of the major scale. I learned how to move from position to position while imporvising.

God help me now articulate what I want to say:
What I noticed (correct me where I'm wrong anyone), that many (if not all) the modes have the same finger patterns for these 5 positions - but in different places. For example A major, pattern 2 is on the 5th fret and that same pattern starts on the 10th fret for A Mixolydian. Bottom line is I learned the patterns of the 5 positions, put on a CD/DVD of the dead or dso and listen for the frets to play the 5 positions in. When I discover what positions on what frets sounds good and understand what chord the song is in, I look it up in the book and many times it's Mixolydian and sometimes even Dorian.

Understanding what mode I'm in is less important for me than simply finding which frets to play the 5 positions. What sounds good and having fun is most important. So I recommend learning the 5 patterns of these 5 positions.

I also learned the 5 positions of major and minor pentatonic and find these modes often work in many songs. For example, pentatonic sounds good in many of the bluesy and cowboy songs. Minor Pentatonic (A) sounds great with the old Gospel JGB song My Sisters and Brothers. Minor Pentatonic (A) also sounds great in Big River BUT you pop Closing of Winterland into the DVD player and Jerry is doing a lot more than Pentatonic. So nothings guarenteed :)

Can I audition ?? LOL !
