I don't see the logic in trying to sell your shows,
except the obvious attempt to phi$h for more profit. I
want to believe it was a clause overlooked in a
contract, or perhaps a momentary lapse of reason, but
I doubt it. $22 for an mp3 is beyond comprehension and
not at all in line with any other band's (that I'm
aware of) attempts to peddle day-after recordings with
downloadable art. I am aware you offer free shn's for
download, and they do kick ass, but I'm also aware that
nothing from '04 that you are attempting to sell is
being made available on the shn site, obviously. I
thought the idea behind DSO was to re-create the
environment of the "Grateful Dead" experience, in
venue or in home, not "The Dead" and their profiteering. The
"Grateful Dead" repaid/gave back to their loyal fans a
small token; the right to record, trade, and posses
their shows for the price of a Maxell XL2S. 30 years
of soundboards float "freely" amongst a community,
which I assume members of DSO were once a part of,
while DSO managed to resort to profiteering after only
releasing 2 solid years of appreciation. "Keep the
family together" (Rob Eaton 03-01-03) or "get rich off
the family" (DSO '04)? The post below has a fan flying into
SF for the Fillmore show, a $30 ticket (I'll save my
Ticketmaster rant for another post) plus airfare, and
maybe hotel. Then he can go home and cap off the whole
experience by shelling out another $22 to get a copy
of the show in an outdated, crunchy format. For those
prices you should at least play his request.
