Subject: I R a campaign manager

My brother has decided to run for County Attorney and of all people to ru(i?)n things for him, he has chosen moi...

Anyway... I'd love some feedback from you loonies on my text for his campaign brochure...I've lost the formatting and fonts when I pasted here, but the real broken up text amounts to headlines.

Btw, wish I could show you all the Liefenstahlish shots of my brother standing tall and solid before the courthouse like he's part of the building, the sun in his eyes, chin stuck out, a look of determination on his face framed against a clear Kansas sky. All shot from below ala the shots of Hitler in "Triumph of the Will" of course.

It's enough to make a good right winger's extremities hard -- Sieg Heil baby! Ooops, did I say that?

--------------------------------------------------------

FACT: Methamphetamine lab incidents in Crawford County have skyrocketed since my opponent took office…

“…according to statistics provided by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, the county had a grand total of 44 meth lab incidents in 2003...
(Pittsburg Sun, “Tired Of Hearing About Meth?” April 4, 2004)

“At the rate we're going, Crawford County is on track to have more than 120 lab incidents this year. That's disturbing…” (Ibid)

Why Do Drug Dealers come here to do their crimes?

Because they see
Crawford County as
SOFT on drug crime.

This area gives shorter sentences and is much more likely to give probation than Oklahoma or Missouri.

What about Drug Courts?

My opponent says “Drug Courts” are the answer to all our problems.
(“County Attorney Files For Election”, Pittsburg Sun, May 30, 2004)

He touts Drug Courts like they are something revolutionary, but fact is…

Drug Court programs
are nothing new

Judge Herbert M. Klein started them in Miami, Florida way back in 1989.

Since then, Drug Courts have sprung up like mushrooms, with different studies making wondrous claims (such as 27% recidivism rates over a 2 year period) for the few offenders who ever manage to graduate. MOST NEVER DO.

The Journal of the American Board of Family Practice states in their publication “Drug Courts: A Primer for the Family Physician” that drug court graduation rates only average 47%.

Do Drug Courts work in the real world?

As you read this, MIAMI, FLORIDA – the place where it all started – “…has the third highest crime rate in the country…” (”Five Metro Areas with the Highest Crime Rates”, Forbes, May 12, 2004)

Can anyone claim drug courts have significantly lowered Miami’s crime rate?

If drug courts haven’t changed things in Miami, Florida, how are they going to change anything in Crawford County, Kansas?

So what is Steve’s approach to the drug problem?

I believe soft drug laws, the state budget crunch and some lazy prosecutors have combined to turn Southeast Kansas into a drug dealer’s paradise.

Some of those factors are beyond the control of any one person, but if we all come together we can make a difference. For my part…

If elected I’ll work with police to improve their testimonial skills and get more convictions.

I’ll push for the maximum penalties available under the law and cut back on the deal making.

I’ll utilize my connections at every opportunity to push for tougher laws, longer sentences and more prison cells for the crooks who are ruining a great place to live and raise a family.

But aren’t drugs a “victimless” crime?

Some folks believe drug use doesn’t hurt anybody, but I’ve seen the homes of innocent people blown to smithereens by the anhydrous ammonia of a “Nazi Cook” gone wrong.

I’ve seen small children left unattended in a room with a loaded gun on the table.

I’ve talked to the grieving widows of cops killed in the line of duty.

Enough is enough. The drug dealers are taking over our streets and now they have their beady little eyes fixed on our court system. It’s time to take Crawford County back!

What other issues
concern Steve?

I believe the County Attorney needs to be available for victims and their families.

Sometimes the law is difficult to understand. Sometimes justice is not served as well as we would all like and I know that hurts.

To that end I pledge not to get so tied up with cases that I don’t have time for the victims and their families and to hire good people who I can trust to handle even the tough cases.

About Steve

I live in Pittsburg, Kansas with my wife Susan – an English professor at Pittsburg State University and our two sons.

Before attending law school I enjoyed a career as a Safety and Security Manager with a variety of hospitals as well as the Toyota plant in Farmington Missouri. I was good at my job, but something was missing.

Family and friends had teased me my whole life that I should have been a lawyer, till one day I took them up on the challenge and went off to attend Thomas M. Cooley Law School.

After graduating, I passed the Kansas bar on my first attempt much to my relief and the shock of my mother-in-law.

I’ve been an Assistant Prosecutor for the last 4 years and have served in that capacity for the last two years in Cherokee County. God bless you for taking the time to read this. I would be most grateful for your vote this November.
