I read nathaniel beal grew up on prouts hill in bowdoin; half way down from the hill, the appleby lived. in the mid 1880's, after the appleby mother and father died, john small bought their farm. for the beals, their farm was abannoned, and john prout bought it from the town of bowdoin in 1872. for 3 generations, the prouts live on the hill until 1947. They were extremely hardworkers. there are no one with the last name appleby and beal that live in bowdoin today. The appleby farm house and barn is long gone. The prout house stills stands strong, with a new roof in 1995, and is one of the oldest houses in bowdoin. john small's father, nathaniel, came on the road in 1862 or so, and was the next house down from appleby. the next house down was Major William Card, which is my g-g grandfather. That house also still stands today. for 2-4 generations, our families have lived together. I have heard old old stories. john small's son asked me one day, when I was 17 and he was in his 80's, if I was related to old Major william card, who lived down the road. his father talked about him. it was not until 10 years later that i figured out what he was talking about. his father was born 1862/3 and my g-g grandfather major william died 1868, in which they were next door neighbors. mr. small talked about the applybe and prout, but the beals were already left the road during his father life (1862/3-1940's) I hope this helps you.
