Well, there are two types, a warm poultrice and a cold poultrice.

The Warm Poultrice-
Fill a pot with oats and enough water so that the oats don't burn. Warm the pot, adding more water as the water evaporates, until there is a thick paste and your oats are pretty warm. Cover in a soft, preferably thick, towel, and apply to the spot. This can be chilled and preserved, but it must be warmed up before each use or it will not work.

The Cold Poultrice
Add bay leaves, milk, more oats (yes I know I love oats) together in a pan, warming them so that another paste is formed. Cool this by wrapping in a towel and setting on ice. Then put on. The good thing about this poultrice is that it can be re-used, just put something over the skin and then rest the towel on it. You might want to make this one in advance and then keep it cool until you need it.
