Seems like a new trend towards early and absentee voting these days.
With all the upcoming retirees it is probably not surprising but the trend also includes the same avenues for many younger people who probably just cannot be bothered to get to the static polling locations or have conflicts with things like work ( not every employer is close to the voters home nor every polling place open early enough for the people who travel a long way to work to vote early. Not even sure if the practice of paying people who vote includes them not loosing pay if it takes them away from the workplace. Some employers did not dock pay if you were voting but with the present economy I don't know if they still do that ).
Also some places they had to keep the polls open beyond when they were supposed to close because of those long lines . Used to be you got there during the hours they were open or missed out but no longer in many jurisdictions.
Heck back in the beginning it was a day off to go vote but I suppose that was because of the long trip to the voting location in the age of horses and walking.

Only way to early vote here I think is the absentee ballot which lets you file your vote early. A few of the older folk I know go that route rather than voting on election day either because they cannot drive or just don't want to go stand in line even if it is a short one for health reasons that they would prefer to be seated not on their feet or can't stand long enough.
