Subject: LBJ probably wouldn't have liked Pinky either....
In reply to: Lori 's message, "Well, you didn't like my good friend Pinky so....." on 04:19:02 05/25/09 Mon

LBJ tried to suppress Buffy Sainte-Marie, mainly because of the Vietnam war and to a lesser extent due to her Cree indian heritage. He sent out letters under White House cover asking radio stations not to play her recordings and when they complied, he sent letters praising them. He was also able to
get recording distributors not to handle her recordings and for a time, her records were nearly impossible to find. Records pressed in Canada were rejected by U.S. Customs or were held up for months in bonded warehouses because Customs wouldn't release them. One of Sainte-Marie's early songs Universal Soldier caught the attention of Donovan who recorded it in 1965 and it was released in the UK the same year. The White House supposedly put pressure on Hickory Records not to release it in the U.S. as a single, but that was unsuccessful and Soldier generated enough interest that song was included in Donovan's next album Fairytale. Sainte-Marie later said LBJ essentially put her out of business in the U.S..
At least Pinky doesn't have LBJ to contend with.

....Fred
