The shit weather that blows across your back yard winds up in my face here, south of the Quad Cities. I can always tell what misery is on its way by checking the Des Moines Register.

I woke up one January morning in Franconia as saw the outside temperature advertising 48 degrees below zero. I put on "Supercoat"--an ankle length, fur-lined affair that was issued to my father at an airbase in Iceland during World War Two--and stepped outside. With no wind and a bit of sun, it was brisk, survivable and, to an extent, enjoyable.

But this Midwestern tundra weather is the pits. I mentioned this to a friend yesterday, a western Illinois native. "Today," he reminded me, "is just the first day of winter."

Oy.
