JC Chasez Says Weird Al's Got Nothing On Joey Fatone
04.25.2003 7:53 AM EDT

"We always knew that there was magic between us, and there will be more. ['NSYNC] will get back together later this year and start getting into the studio." — JC Chasez

GLENDALE, California — Joey Fatone's decision to record an album of song parodies may seem odd, but it makes perfect sense to fellow 'NSYNC star JC Chasez.

"I thought it was the best idea in the world, because he does that anyway," Chasez said during a break from his own solo project (see "JC Chasez Previews Schizophrenic Solo Debut"). "People don't know that Joey has spoofed every song that we've ever recorded. Every time we go into the studio, he sings the whole song off the top of his head, a whole stupid version of the song, and makes up his own words and does all these dumb things."

The only problem with Fatone's hidden talent is his past parodies are not exactly suitable for the majority of 'NSYNC fans.

"They're usually pretty bad," Chasez said, laughing. " 'Tearin' Up My Heart' was 'Tearin' Up My Ass,' you know, like, 'When I eat spicy food ...' or something like that. That's actually one of the more delicate ones."

Fatone's spokesperson had no information on the record, but Lance Bass said recently he knew of a parody of Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me a River" in the works (see "New 'NSYNC In 2004, But First A Joey Fatone Comedy LP").

And it appears Timberlake won't be the only 'NSYNC singer spoofed. "He's actually [asked], 'Yo dude, if I did 'Blowing Me Up' but I did other words, can you give me the track?,' " Chasez said. "I was like, 'Let me talk to Dallas [Austin, the song's producer], dude.' I definitely think he's doing the right thing. He's gonna do something that nobody else is doing right now who has the kind of spotlight that he has. And Joey does it as good as anybody."

Fatone has until the fall to complete the project, since 'NSYNC are scheduled to end their hiatus then and begin recording the follow-up to 2001's Celebrity.

Chasez said the group is especially excited to reunite after singing a cappella together in a Bee Gees tribute at February's Grammy Awards (see "Eminem Delivers Rousing 'Lose Yourself,' Clash Get A-List Tribute At Grammys").

"The minute we start singing as a group it just sounds great — I mean, it sounds great to us," he said. "There's something in the room, you get chills when you start singing again. And we were happy to do [the tribute], especially to be honored like that, to be asked by the Bee Gees, one of the reasons that vocal harmony groups are doing what they do. They carried on a legacy, and it was kind of weird in a way because it was kind of like passing on a torch or something. It's like, 'OK, you get the next five miles.'

"There's no question there's magic there," he continued, "and it's weird to say, but we all knew it from the beginning. We never knew how far it would go or whatever; we always knew that there was magic between us, and there will be more. We'll get back together later this year and start getting into the studio and life will be good."

When 'NSYNC do join forces again, JC and Justin will be armed with songs leftover from their solo albums.

"The guys might say, 'Dude, that's dope,' and if not, I'll start from the drawing board from there and write for the group," Chasez said. "I've always been about what works."

New 'NSYNC In 2004, But First A Joey Fatone Comedy LP
03.19.2003

"You'll hear some Justin songs on there and all kinds of stuff. I'm pretty sure 'Cry Me a River,' something about a liver." — Lance Bass on Joey Fatone's parody record

HOLLYWOOD — With Justin Timberlake's solo career booming and JC Chasez's looming, will other 'NSYNCers break out with records of their own?

"I'm a bass singer. No bass singers have solo albums," Lance Bass quipped at General Motors' pre-Oscar party on Tuesday.

Bass may not be able to justify going it alone, but he did reveal the next member of his pop group preparing for the leap.

"I know Joey's going to do a comedy album, which is going to be pretty funny," Bass said. "He's going to do a Weird Al Yankovic-type funny album, all parodies. You'll hear some Justin songs on there and all kinds of stuff. I'm pretty sure 'Cry Me a River,' something about a liver. He'll have fun with it."

Meanwhile, Bass will continue to develop film and television projects for his Free Lance Entertainment production company, and he'll serve as the lead judge on NBC's "The Search for the Most Talented Kid in America," debuting March 21. "It's awesome little kids," Bass said. "It's very cool and very positive for television."

Elsewhere in 'NSYNC land, Chris Kirkpatrick just signed on to manage the Dallas band Ohno, according to a Jive Records spokesperson, while Chasez is finishing his solo album for a late July release.

And of course Timberlake is gearing up for the Justified and Stripped Tour, which kicks off June 4 in Phoenix (see "Justin Timberlake/ Christina Aguilera Tour Dates Announced").

The solo endeavors are expected to wind down in September, and 'NSYNC plan to reunite in the studio early next year.

"We've already started writing about a month ago," Bass said. "JC and Justin have been writing a lot and are going to have stuff that didn't make their albums that's more 'NSYNC-style, so I don't know what direction this will go, it will definitely be interesting.

"If it was up to me, I'm really influenced by the '80s lately, so I could see some '80s rock in there, some fun '80s pop," he added. "I love how it's come back in style, and it's just fun music."

'NSYNC hope to work with the Neptunes again, but Bass said the group will be producing a lot of the album on its own. When the LP drops the guys will launch a world tour. "Of course Justin will do some solo stuff, and JC will," Bass said of the outing. "If Joey gets his album, he will too."

Bass was enthused about the plethora of 'NSYNC happenings but noted that he felt guilty walking the red carpet while soldiers were preparing for battle in the Middle East.

"I have a lot of friends from Orlando and Mississippi that are over there right now," he said. "It's very scary, and my prayers are with them."

A SHOW TO BEAT

By DAN AQUILANTE GWEN STEFANI

February 24, 2003 -- WHETHER it was just a case of dumb luck or the best production values an awards show has ever been nailed together with, for the first time the Grammy Awards were actually fun to watch. The producers bucked conventional award show wisdom and dumped the host as an unnecessary element. They emphasized performance and kept the pace as frantic and energetic as the music being honored. To that end, the show opened with a rare sighting of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel on stage together for the first time in years to perform a poignant rendition of "The Sounds of Silence." Seeing these guys together right up front screamed this was going to be a special evening. Norah Jones followed up performing her jazzy swing hit "Don't Know Why." James Taylor accompanied by classical cellist Yo-Yo Ma did "Sweet Baby James," The Dixie Chicks covered Stevie Nicks' "Landslide," Eminem teamed with the Roots on "Lose Yourself" and Coldplay performed "Politik" backed by the New York Philharmonic. Be it rap or symphonic, the hallmark of each of these performances was class.

A great performance at the Grammys can turn your career around - just ask Ricky Martin. At this year's Grammys, the single defining performance belonged to *NSNYC who performed a medley of Bee Gee tunes, a capella, in five-part harmony. If there was any question of how this act will stay relevant as music shifts away from boy band fodder, this set proved this band is capable of any style.

The one problem the Grammys have yet to overcome is that they sap all suspense out of who's going to win by allowing contenders to perform just before they are awarded a trophy. Just because you play the gig shouldn't mean you take home a prize. When you examine what a Grammy really means to an artist, it all comes down to who got to say "Thanks" from the podium. Had Bruce Springsteen, who was the favorite, won album of the year, the Grammy would have been a validation of his superlative effort on "The Rising," making amends for all the great albums he and the E Street Band made that were ignored by the academy, like "Born In The USA." But would a Grammy have helped the Boss sell more copies of his 9/11-influenced opus? Probably not. Everyone knows who Bruce is, nearly every critic's best list of 2002 included this album, and most every fan already owns a copy. But for newcomer Norah Jones, who won the triple crown - record and album of the year and best new artist - the win historically translates into a boost in sales. With the music industry in the toilet - down more than 12 percent from last year - you'll probably see labels use the Grammys as a sales tool, the same way movie makers use the Oscars. This year's Grammys will be remembered because they were good but also because it's the first show of its kind broadcast in high definition, digital surround sound. If this kind of technology is going to make its bow, who better to do it than the Grammys.

Eminem Delivers Rousing 'Lose Yourself,' Clash Get A-List Tribute At Grammys

02.24.2003 1:34 AM EST

In a year fraught with political turmoil, turbulence and insecurity, music fans turned to their favorite songs to take them away from many of their problems and help them come to terms with others that were impossible to escape. Whether it was Eminem rapping, "Lose yourself in the music," or Bruce Springsteen singing, "Come on up for the rising/ Come on up, lay your hands in mine," the messages of unity were universal. (Click here to see highlights from the show.)

At the 45th annual Grammy Awards, held Sunday (February 23) at New York's Madison Square Garden, apolitical hedonists and social activists alike rallied together to celebrate the emotional power of the crooned, rapped and shouted passage. Many of the 18 main attractions expressed solidarity through collaborations with other musicians. (Click here for the list of winners.)

Two tribute performances stood amongst the evening's highlights. At the end of the night images of a succession of musicians who died in the past year flashed across a giant screen, followed by an all-star tribute to Clash member Joe Strummer, who died in December from a sudden heart attack (see "Joe Strummer Of The Clash Dead At 50"). An ad-hoc supergroup composed of Elvis Costello, his drummer Pete Thomas, Foo Fighters' frontman Dave Grohl, Bruce Springsteen, E Street Band guitarist Steven Van Zandt and No Doubt bassist Tony Kanal ripped through "London Calling" with enough force to shake the gates of Buckingham Palace. Each of the singers was armed with a guitar and traded off vocal lines with acerbic grace, contorting their faces as they sang. Van Zandt clawed through a bristling solo full of emotional bends, and the band exited to a choir of squealing feedback.

The members of 'NSYNC, who haven't performed together since last April, reconvened to honor the Bee Gees, the legendary pop/disco group that called it quits after member Maurice Gibb passed away in January (see "Maurice Gibb Of The Bee Gees Dead At 53"). The pop stars performed an a cappella, harmony-saturated medley of "Lonely Days," "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart," and "How Deep Is Your Love." For the segment closer, "Stayin' Alive," Justin Timberlake performed human beat box. Some critics perceived a deep divide in the group after Timberlake went solo, Lance Bass trained to blast into space and Joey Fatone focused on acting. There was no evidence of any such rift as the guys paid respect to their childhood heroes.

Eminem's performance of "Lose Yourself" with the Roots wasn't nearly as controversial as his 2001 version of "Stan" with Elton John," but it was easily as captivating. The pugilism of Em matched with the organic hip-hop of the Roots made for a striking combination. Eminem came onstage in a black ski cap and gray T-shirt emblazoned with "Free Yayo" (a reference to Tony Yayo of 50 Cent's G-Unit, who's in jail for gun possession) and traded off lines with D12 rapper Proof while the Roots held down the rhythm. Guitarist Hub played the main riff on a double-neck guitar and as the song built in tension, the band became more intense, climaxing the number by subbing in the main riff from Run-DMC's "Rock Box."

Grammy Night: Real Musicians, Actual Instruments — What Next? By Kurt Loder

What a lousy night this was for cynics, scoffers and cheap-shot hipsters of every inclination. I mean, what went wrong? The Grammy organizers have long held the patent on award-show cheese, and the thought of wading through three-and-a-half hours of it this year — were they serious? — set the brain bubbling with pre-emptive snoots and sniggers.

But ... but it was a good show. And I don't just mean there was nothing bad about it (although that was certainly a Grammy first). I mean that pretty good was pretty much as bad as it got; and at one point, at least, it was great. (Click here for a list of winners.)

OK, maybe a Faith Hill power ballad isn't your cup of syrup; and maybe the Dixie Chicks defy your comprehension on every level. I found my own attention wandering as Vanessa Carlton made her tasteful way through "A Thousand Miles." But even if you had no particular use for what these people were doing, I think you'd have to admit they were at least doing it honestly, and well. (Click here to see photos from the show.)

And what about Avril Lavigne? Her public persona can be irritating, God knows: the faux-punk necktie, the photo-op snarl. But fired up by her maximum-blast band, she tore into "Sk8er Boi" and kicked butt. There's no denying this!

Coldplay didn't actually stop the show, but in a less stellar context, the band's epic rendition of "Politik" certainly might have. (Conductor Michael Kamen was the perfect collaborator here: a past master of rock-meets-orchestra fusion whose credits range from Pink Floyd to Metallica.) This grand and soulful performance made "progressive rock" seem like an interesting idea again. Maybe even progressive.

Sheryl Crow and Kid Rock's bright, strutting version of Crow's "You're an Original" demonstrated all of the effervescent qualities that can make straight trad-rock so exhilarating: a good, strong song projected with verve and personality. It draws you in before you have time to muster any resistance.

Norah Jones isn't a rock act, of course. But what is she? The ambiguity of her appeal is appealing in itself. Her jazz fluency is clear, though, and probably explains whatever it is the question may be. Jones deserved the Grammys she collected, not least because in accepting one of them she actually thanked, not her label or her lawyer or whatever, but her musicians for helping her win it (see "Norah Jones Sweeps Grammys, Boss Wins Three, Avril Shut Out").

John Mayer deserved his Grammy, too. "Your Body Is a Wonderland" is a unique and moving tune. The best part of his solo performance of it, though, was his own subtle musicianship: The man is an ace acoustic guitarist. (Electric, too; catch him live.)

There were — can you believe it? — no teen-pop performances at the Grammys this year. But 'NSYNC did come out to offer a tribute to the Bee Gees, and their lush, a cappella harmonizing on such vintage hits as "Lonely Days" and "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" was stirring — a tribute in itself to the rich possibilities of superior, unaccompanied voices. I hereby disown every dark thought I've ever had about these guys. Well, mostly.

Nelly gave the night a gratifying jolt of whiplash rap. His intricate interaction with Kelly Rowland should give the competition something to contemplate; and I didn't hear anybody complaining about the slinky chicks in the spangly red outfits, either.

The weak points in the show were minor, I thought. The idea of Eminem backed by the Roots was so tantalizing that their actual performance seemed muted, just slightly off. And while Ashanti bringing on a troupe of cute kids to chime in on "Dreams" was very sweet, the overall effect of her spot in the show struck me as a little suburban.

Bruce Springsteen's performance of his Grammy-winning hit, "The Rising," got kind of ragged about two-thirds of the way through; but given his well-known concert standards, that's probably a quibble. In any case, he came back later to help provide the hands-down high point of the night, joining Dave Grohl, Elvis Costello and E Street Band guitarist Steve Van Zandt in fronting a ferocious rendition of the Clash classic "London Calling." This must have been one of the purest, most impassioned rock and roll moments ever to make its way onto television, and the only letdown was that it didn't just go on for the rest of the night.

So, again, quite a show. Was there any larger meaning to it? Maybe. I have no quarrel with Britney and Christina — they've made some really good singles. (Let us not, however, speak of O-Town or 98 Degrees.) But Sunday night's Grammy show, with all of its jubilant musicianship, its vivid display of talented people actually playing together, seemed to herald the end of a dismal era of smugly prefabricated pop. I could be wrong about this, but it felt like a new dawn of some sort, after a dark night that lasted way too long.

'Rising' Expectations

Here's what to expect on the Grammy telecast -- Eminem, the Boss, Norah, and many more will perform. EW.com gives you the scoop on the latest lineup by Brian Hiatt

RAP SESSION Eminem will take the stage with hip-hop band the Roots at this year's Grammys

Eminem rocks with the Roots. Bruce Springsteen teams with Dave Grohl and Elvis Costello. And 'NSync sings the Bee Gees.

No, this isn't a wish list for the VMAs. It's three of the planned highlights for Sunday's Grammy Awards ceremony, televised live from Madison Square Garden (CBS, 8 p.m.). For this high-profile return to New York after four years in L.A., the event's producers say they're more intent than ever on creating memorable performances. ''In past years, what I would always come away with was those special Grammy moments,'' says Neil Portnow, the new president of Grammy organizers NARAS. ''We'll be looking to create a number of those this time.''

Some final details are still being worked out at press time, but here's most of what you can expect to see on Sunday night:

EM 'N' THEM Eminem will be joined by new collaborators: critically adored Philly hip-hop collective the Roots, who backed Jay-Z for 2001's ''Unplugged.'' Grammy writer/producer Ken Ehrlich wouldn't reveal which song Slim Shady and the Roots will play, but it probably won't be the most obvious choice, ''Lose Yourself,'' since the guitar-heavy song came out too late for Grammy consideration. Then again, Mr. Mathers isn't one to fret too much about the rules.

CLASH OF THE TITANS Grammy organizers had hoped to pay tribute to late Clash frontman Joe Strummer with a performance by the group's three surviving members. But the band is ''just not ready,'' says Ehrlich. Instead, Bruce Springsteen, Dave Grohl, and Elvis Costello will trade vocals on the Clash anthem ''London Calling,'' backed by No Doubt bassist Tony Kanal, Attractions drummer Pete Thomas, and E Street Band guitarist Steve Van Zandt. Despite their decision not to play, the members of the Clash, who will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next month, have given their blessing to the performance, Ehrlich says.

SUNDAY NIGHT FEVER The recently solo members of 'NSync will unite to salute another fallen musician, Maurice Gibb -- whose band, the Bee Gees, had already been slated to receive the Grammys' Legend Award before his death last month. Justin and his bandmates will sing a three-and-a-half-minute medley of Bee Gees hits, including ''Lonely Days,'' ''How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,'' and ''Stayin' Alive.''

'RISING' TIDE Five-time nominee Bruce Springsteen will perform twice -- once in the Clash tribute, and once with the E Street Band. As expected, they'll play the title track from ''The Rising,'' but Ehrlich hints at some surprises within the performance. Presumably, a rousing version of ''War'' won't be involved.

JONES FOR JONES The evening's other likely big winner, Norah Jones, will give an intimate performance that Ehrlich says will be reminiscent of Alanis Morissette's candlelit rendition of ''You Oughta Know'' in '96. But don't expect it to be like fellow piano-playing newcomer Alicia Keys' look-I-can-dance moment last year: ''There will be no tango for Norah,'' Ehrlich promises.

TAYLOR MADE John Mayer, Vanessa Carlton, and James Taylor (backed by cellist Yo Yo Ma) will give linked performances meant to show the enduring power of singer/songwriters. The details are still being worked out, so they may either sing together or simply give ''contiguous performances,'' Ehrlich says. Meanwhile, another singer/songwriter, Avril Lavigne, will get her own performance, blasting through ''Complicated.''

R&B FAVES Duet queen Ashanti will go it solo this year, performing the ballad ''Dreams.'' But Nelly and Kelly Rowland WILL team up, performing a medley of ''Dilemma'' (the ''Nelly, I love you'' song) and the inescapable ''Hot in Herre.''

OTHER PERFORMANCES In their highest-profile TV appearance to date, Best Alternative Album favorites Coldplay will soar through ''Politik,'' backed by the New York Philharmonic. Other acts include No Doubt, Faith Hill, and the Dixie Chicks. In all, the show will feature 18 performances, running at least three and a half hours. So forget about catching ''Alias.''

Eminem, 'NSYNC, Clash Tribute Added To Grammys
02.13.2003 1:02 PM EST

Eminem, 'NSYNC, and Sheryl Crow with Lenny Kravitz have been added to the list of performers for the 45th annual Grammy Awards.

Although details of his performance are not known, if previous awards show performances are any indication, the set from the Detroit rapper with five Grammy nominations should be special. At the 43rd annual Grammys, Eminem delivered "Stan" as a duet with Elton John. Six months earlier, he was surrounded by throngs of Shady clones for "The Real Slim Shady" at the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards.

'NSYNC's performance, the group's first since its tour wrapped in April, will be part of a dedication to the Bee Gees, whose Maurice Gibb died last month (see "Maurice Gibb Of The Bee Gees Dead At 53"). The disco trio will receive the Grammy Legend Award for their contributions and influence in the recording field.

Entering New York's Madison Square Garden with eight Grammys already under her belt, Crow could come away with a cool baker's dozen should she make good on her five nods. Kravitz, meanwhile, has won four Grammys in the past. (Click here for the list of nominees and for photos of this year's Grammy nominees and performers.)

Elvis Costello, No Doubt bassist Tony Kanal, and Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band guitarist Steve Van Zandt will pay their respects to the late Joe Strummer with a tribute to the singer/guitarist and his band the Clash, who are up for Best Long Form Music Video with "Westway to the World." Costello and No Doubt each racked up three nominations, while Springsteen is contending for five.

Strummer died of a heart attack in December (see "Autopsy Finds Joe Strummer Died Of Cardiac Arrest").

Eminem, 'NSYNC and Sheryl Crow with Lenny Kravitz join previously announced performers Ashanti, Avril Lavigne and No Doubt, among others (see "No Doubt To Play, Beyonce and Michelle Branch To Present At Grammys").

The 45th annual Grammy Awards will be broadcast on CBS at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Before the show, catch MTV's pre-show telecast, "Backstage at the Grammys," at 7 p.m.

MTV's parent company, Viacom, also owns CBS.

Justin Timberlake On Tourmate Christina: 'She's Bad'

"Anybody who sits down during the show will get kicked out. If you sit down, once I find you, you will get booted." — Justin Timberlake

and JC at NBA All-Star Jam Session in Atlanta
At the American Music Awards two weeks ago, Justin Timberlake was pretty secretive about his upcoming concert plans. But now that touring partner Christina Aguilera has spilled the beans, Timberlake feels justified to start yapping about the summer extravaganza.

"It was an idea that both of our managers concocted," he said. "When it came to me I said, 'It sounds really interesting. It would be fun to be on tour with somebody who's that talented' " (see "Timberlake, Aguilera Will Team Up For Summer Tour").

Although some folks have raised an eyebrow at the idea of Justin touring with a supposed rival of Britney Spears, Timberlake wants to downplay any potential controversy, and he's quick to sing Aguilera's praises.

"She's got one of the most amazing voices I've ever heard," he said. "That homegirl can sing. She can release a song like 'Dirrty' and get everybody talking, and then release a song like 'Beautiful' and say, 'Look, this is why I am standing here.' She's bad. That's the Christina that I met on the TV show that we did ['The All-New Mickey Mouse Club'], and that's the Christina that will be around 10 years from now."

One of reasons Timberlake is eager to hit the road with Aguilera is because he's confident enough in his abilities as a singer and performer to not worry about being upstaged. Once he starts specifically talking about his show, he starts to sound like a self-aggrandizing WWE wrestler.

"I'm gonna make an arena feel like a club," he boasted. "I want people to feel like they're a part of the show and it's a party. Anybody who sits down during the show will get kicked out. If you sit down, once I find you, you will get booted."

Before Timberlake and Christina hit the road, Justin will re-enter the studio to tinker with new material. And next month he'll shoot the video for "Rock Your Body," the next single from Justified. A director for the clip will be chosen in the coming days.

If he's looking to ruffle feathers with the video, he'll have a tough time topping the audacity of "Cry Me a River," which depicted a heartbroken Justin watching a Britney look-alike getting in another man's car. Then Timberlake breaks into her house and leaves a tape of himself groping another girl running on her TV (see "Justin And Britney At War, Magazine Cover Story Declares").

Naturally, the footage provoked a flood a commentary from fans — which was actually Timberlake's goal. He said the clip was his way of commenting on the way the media has portrayed his love life, and he doesn't regret having filmed it.

"I knew what I was doing," he said. "When you become a product of the media's rumor mill you kinda get this 'thing' about you. It was a chance for me to use it and do a little reversing. To go, 'Now I've got all of you in the palm of my hand.' "

Since Timberlake released Justified, many critics have stopped talking about his love life and started focusing on his music. For him, being taken seriously as a musician is one of his greatest achievements, and it makes it easier to stomach the rumors that circulate like buzzing flies and the reporters that still want to dig for dirt.

"Regardless of what you do, rumors are gonna be around," Timberlake shrugged. "I'm sure when Eminem goes to do an interview they still wanna ask him about [ex-wife] Kim and his mom. And I'm sure he don't wanna talk about it just like I don't wanna talk about all this bullsh-- either. But it's just part of what we do. Unfortunately it's entertaining for people. They want to know about what you do when they don't see you."

JC Chasez Ready To Receive Your Love And/Or Criticism

01.31.2003

JC Chasez
Photo: Jason Campbell

With his unfinished solo album still months from release, 'NSYNC's JC Chasez is about to really hear it from his fans.

Although he mentioned his plans to have fans steer him in the right direction on his solo debut, expected to drop in July, months ago (see "JC Chasez Wants Your Opinion, But Keep It On the Download"), with Monday's launch of the Web site www.OnlyArtist.com, fans will have the chance to mouth off or kiss up, as the case may be.

Visitors to the site will be faced with three questions about Chasez's current single, "Blowin' Me Up (With Her Love)," off the soundtrack to "Drumline," and his contributions to 'NSYNC. The feedback will then be used to help mold his as-yet-untitled album, which he's currently recording in Los Angeles with producers Rodney Jerkins (Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys), BT ('NSYNC) and Riprock 'n' Alex G (Christina Aguilera), among others. (Dallas Austin has been solicited by the Chasez camp, but at press time he had yet to lay down any tracks.)

JC will then periodically post snippets of the fruits of his labor for the next four weeks on the site for fans to comment on, and the response will help guide him throughout the rest of the recording process, according to an OnlyArtist.com spokesperson. The portions of songs offered on the site, however, will not be what winds up on the album — complete versions of those songs may be offered on the Web site in the future.

OnlyArtist.com may be familiar to some fans who remember Chasez wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the site's name at last year's MTV Video Music Awards.

Chasez's album is expected to be released in July, and the CD-single of "Blowin' Me Up" will be available February 25.

Timberlake, Aguilera Will Team Up For Summer Tour

01.14.2003 3:10 PM EST

"We're going to make it the tour of the year." — Christina Aguilera

LOS ANGELES — Justin Timberlake is reuniting with his "Mickey Mouse Club" co-star.

No, not Britney Spears — Christina Aguilera.

At Monday's American Music Awards (see photos from the red carpet), Timberlake said his summer tour would be a co-headlining affair, but he stopped himself from divulging more. "I will not reveal the name and start some rumors," he said mysteriously.

Fortunately, Aguilera was just steps behind him on the red carpet and let the cat out of the bag.

"Oh my God! I'm so excited," Aguilera said. "Me and Justin are going to go out, and it's going to be such an amazing thing. There's talk of us writing a song together and what not. He's so great. We're going to make it the tour of the year."

Details on the tour are forthcoming. Meanwhile, Timberlake and Aguilera are preparing to release the third singles from their recent albums, Justified and Stripped.

Like his tour, Justin wanted to keep his song a secret. Christina is deciding between a few favorites.

"It could be 'Can't Hold Us Down,' which I did with [Lil'] Kim, or 'Fighter' is a big favorite with a lot of people," she said. "'Impossible' will be in the mix, and 'Infatuation.' There's so many that could be a possibility."

Aguilera performed "Impossible," which was written and produced by Alicia Keys, at Monday's ceremony, along with "Beautiful" featuring producer Linda Perry on piano (see "Missing Eminem Cleans Up At American Music Awards").

Before her summer tour, Christina hopes to choose a script to make her big-screen debut (see "Christina Aguilera Plans Tour, Movie Role For 2003"). "I definitely want to make a movie before my next album," she said Monday.

Timberlake said he'll do a promotional tour of Europe and hit the studio again before the tour with Aguilera. On Friday he shot a video for "Work It," his collaboration on Nelly's latest album (see "Nelly, Justin Bring Video Cameras To Playboy Mansion").

"Yeah, that was tough work," Timberlake joked. "I had to hang out with Hef, watch a bunch of naked women run around. It was awful."

Nelly, Justin Bring Video Cameras To Playboy Mansion

01.13.2003 10:01 AM EST

Never mind the giant trampoline or the scantily clad Playmates dodging flamingos, Nelly and Justin Timberlake were working at the Playboy Mansion on Friday. Honest.

Nelly and "his dirty," as he calls the 'NSYNC singer, crashed Hugh Hefner's notorious Beverly Hills estate to shoot a video for the pair's song "Work It," the fourth single from Nellyville.

In the clip, directed by Joseph Kahn (Eminem's "Without Me," No Doubt's "Hey Baby"), Nelly and Timberlake play gardeners dressed in matching jumpsuits with name patches sewn on. When a playful scuffle breaks out between the two, Nelly's runaway lawnmower crashes through the bushes and onto the Playboy estate. (Timberlake, who has a rake in the clip, told Kahn, "I'm not used to manual labor," when he was directed to use the tool.)

Of course, the gardeners have to retrieve the mower, and in doing so, find themselves in an illustrious world most men only dream about.

"Work It" follows the smash Nellyville singles "Hot in Herre," "Dilemma" and "Air Force Ones," which has quickly climbed to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

Earlier this week, Nelly was nominated for five Grammys, including the coveted Album of the Year (see "Eminem, Avril Lavigne, Nelly, Norah Jones Nab Most Grammy Noms").

Eminem, Avril Lavigne, Nelly, Norah Jones Nab Most Grammy Noms
01.07.2003 10:16 AM EST

With eight artists grabbing five nominations each, this year's Grammy Awards looks to be one of the most competitive in the ceremony's 45 years (Click here for the list of nominees.)

Three relative newcomers, Ashanti, Norah Jones and Avril Lavigne, join Sheryl Crow, Eminem, Nelly, Raphael Saadiq and Bruce Springsteen as the artists with the greatest chances of leaving New York's Madison Square Garden on February 23 with the most golden gramophones in their arms. (Click for photos of this year's Grammy nominees.)

All eyes will be on Norah Jones, who stands to reign supreme on Grammy night with four of her five nominations arriving in the big four categories: Best New Artist; Album of the Year, for Come Away With Me; and Song of the Year (given to the songwriter Jesse Harris) and Record of the Year for "Don't Know Why." Jones and her full-length debut album also received nods in the categories Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, Best Pop Vocal Album, and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, while the LP's producer, Arif Mardin, scored one in the Producer of the Year, Non-Classical category to give the Norah Jones camp a whopping eight nominations combined.

Eminem, Nelly, Springsteen and Lavigne received two nods apiece for the big awards. Em's "Without Me" is up for Record of the Year, along with Nelly's "Dilemma" (which features Kelly Rowland), Nickelback's "How You Remind Me" and Vanessa Carlton's "A Thousand Miles." The Eminem Show will vie for Album of the Year honors against Come Away With Me, the Dixie Chicks' Home, Nelly's Nellyville and Bruce Springsteen's The Rising.

Springsteen was also nominated in the Song of the Year category for "The Rising." The Boss' tune, which resonated with many after the events of September 11, 2001, will face off against another song inspired by the tragedy, Alan Jackson's "Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)."

The Best New Artist category finds John Mayer the sole male amidst a quartet of ladies, Ashanti, Michelle Branch, Jones and Lavigne, whose single "Complicated" is also up for Song of the Year. (Last year, Alicia Keys walked off with the prestigious honor. Who do you think should win Grammy's equivalent to Rookie of the Year? Take our poll.)

"Chauvinists unite!" Mayer joked at Madison Square Garden, in a half-hearted attempt to strum up support for his cause. "I'm just going to go to sports bars and lobby.

"It's cool," he continued sincerely. "I look at the list and say, 'It makes sense to me.' "

While Ashanti is likely to have her fingers crossed for the big Best New Artist win, she'll be doubly excited when the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration category is awarded. Besides receiving a nod for assisting Fat Joe with "What's Luv?" the songbird with the second-best-selling debut album of 2002 has increased her chances of winning with "Always on Time," her collaboration with Ja Rule. Ashanti likes both songs, but she looks to the phrase "blood is thicker than water" when deciding whom to root for.

"I don't necessarily have a preference, but it I had to choose, it would have to be my brother Ja," she said. "That's my family, Murder, Inc. Records."

Nominations for the 45th annual Grammy Awards were announced Tuesday (January 7) at a press conference held in Madison Square Garden. Among the artists on hand to read the roster of those hopeful for Grammy gold were Ashanti, country singer Kenny Chesney, '80s faceplate Cyndi Lauper, Avril Lavigne, John Mayer, Justin Timberlake, Nelly and producer Jimmy Jam, who filled in for a previously scheduled but absent Sean "P. Diddy" Combs.

The artists each took the podium in turn to announce the contestants for two of the categories, which made for some interesting pronunciations. Ashanti (pronounced a-shan-tee) became the faux-fabulous sounding "A-shan-tay" whenever most on hand mentioned her name; and Lavigne, in announcing the nominees for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance botched David Bowie's name, pronouncing it 'Bow-wee" (as in the dog sound "bow-wow"). The flub is not likely to go unnoticed among Lavigne's critics, and it just might go down in pop-star infamy, the way Britney Spears' remark that suggested Pat Benatar sang "I Love Rock 'N Roll," a song Joan Jett made famous, did in a fall 2001 interview.

Four nominations fell on the Dixie Chicks, Alan Jackson, R&B singer Remy Shand and Chad Kroeger, who scored one with his band Nickelback, and three others for his song "Hero," penned for the soundtrack to "Spider-Man."

Besides two in the big four, Vanessa Carlton's other nomination came in the Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s). While most categories in the Composing/Arranging field are often overlooked in favor of more artist-specific ones, the 21-year-old pianist doesn't consider her third nod to be any less important. In fact, considering that she's the only nominee who's also an artist in that category, she said she's perhaps most proud of that honor because it shows her as the well-rounded artist she is.

"I am most excited for that nomination because it is recognizing the process, something other than the vocal and the song itself," she explained. "It kind of acknowledges how the puzzle fits together. I think [Be Not Nobody] is a beautiful record and I'm really proud to know that people recognized that. I was totally surprised, though. I really was."

India.Arie, Erykah Badu, Johnny Cash, Elvis Costello, Dr. Dre, Randy Newman, Arif Mardin and No Doubt also nabbed three nominations each.

Touting over 100 categories, the Grammys is the most comprehensive music awards show, but even with classifications such as Best Polka Album (for which Jimmy Sturr's Top of the World looks to be the odds-on favorite) and Best Remixed Record, Non-Classical, there just aren't enough designations for some folks.

"Actually, one they didn't mention was best haircut-changing-style every year,' a near-bald Timberlake kidded. "I'm hoping I get the Victrola for that."

Maybe next year, Justin. In the meantime, the 'NSYNC star must be content with just one nomination, for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration, for the Clipse-featured "Like I Love You," the first single from his solo debut, Justified.

Super production duo the Neptunes were puzzlingly absent from the Producer of the Year category, which instead found Dr. Dre, Nellee Hooper, Arif Mardin, Rick Rubin, and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis attempting to stake their claim to the title. After producing a number of Grammy-nominated tracks, including Timberlake's "Like I Love You," Nelly's "Hot in Herre" and Mystikal's "Bouncin' Back (Bumpin' Me Against the Wall)," it's a mystery why Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams didn't receive any love from the Recording Academy.

"For the second year in a row, can you imagine that?" Williams said of his Grammy dis. "All the work we've done? For whatever reason, nobody thought to put us on the ballot."

The 45th annual ceremony marks the Grammys' return to New York, after Los Angeles hosted the previous four events. The show will be broadcast live on CBS at 8 p.m. (ET/PT). Before the show, catch MTV's pre-show telecast "Backstage at the Grammys," airing at 7 p.m. ET.

MTV's parent company, Viacom, also owns CBS.

Sorry...(I'm always apologizing y'all!)...for being AWOL a lot of times!

We just moved to a townhouse/condo, and since Dec. 16, it's been one h*ll of a move! (Lizzie, you know the feeling!) It's about 900 sq. ft. smaller than my old house. We didn't expect to sell the house right away (within 2 wks we got a contract signed!), and the buyers were from New Mexico and wanted to move before X'MAS...Uhm, I wonder why?!

It's good the builder of the townhouse let us moved in before we even closed on the deal...of course, for a 'larger' earnest money.

We're still unpacking boxes, and 'packing' for Goodwill (My husband had already brought about a dozen huge boxes to them). We're downsizing now that the kids don't live here anymore: less area to clean, no dirty clothes to pick up after, no empty milk jugs, and NO GRASS to mow! But they're here for the holidays, and though I realize I missed them more than I thought, I don't think they, and my husband, will appreciate it if I ask them to move back in...again. =)

Again, I wish everyone a very Happy New Year, and a healthy one!
Celebrate sensibly...

p.s. Liz, we're switching to DSL...you know what that means to me!...My computer-electronically-challenged-self will need MORE Zoloft! I already froze the computer once...if that even IS possible!

TV INFO:

Show: Rank The 25 Top Entertainers of 2002

About: (#025) The 25 Top Entertainers of 2002
Rank took a look at the most captivating performers of 2002. Actress Jennifer Aniston reigned queen at number one. Brooke Burke caught up with The Friends' star as she accepted her E! Entertainer of the Year Award, speaking candidly about what the past year has meant to her both personally and professionally.
Not wanting to leave our viewers out of the holiday list making, we asked viewers who their favorite star of 2002 was. E! Online voters put American Idol phenom Kelly Clarkson at the top of their list, placing (2) Eminem, (3) Britney Spears, (4) Kiefer Sutherland and (5) Reese Witherspoon not far behind. Online voters also named Christina Aguilera as the Star that Bared Too Much Skin, 'N Sync as the Most Played Out Boy Band, "The Adventures of Pluto Nash" as the Worst Film Flop of 2002, Gwyneth Paltrow's black Oscar® attire as the Worst Red Carpet Outfit and Julia Roberts as their Favorite Past Entertainer of the Year Award Winner. For those celebrities who found themselves in the spotlight for all of the wrong reasons in 2002, we just couldn't resist and tallied them up for what we'll call "the flip side" of this "best of" list. Martha Stewart, Winona Rider, Rosie O'Donnell and Michael Jackson were among the celebs who called attention to themselves this year for their notorious headline-making antics.
Below is a complete list of Rank's top 25 entertainers in order:
1. Jennifer Aniston; 2. Reese Witherspoon; 3. Eminem; 4. Jennifer Lopez; 5. The Osbournes; 6. Ray Romano; 7. Vin Diesel; 8. Mike Myers; 9. Halle Berry; 10. Tobey Maguire; 11. Jennifer Garner; 12. Adam Sandler; 13. Samuel L. Jackson; 14. Cast of CSI; 15. Bernie Mac; 16. Nia Vardalos; 17. Ice Cube; 18. Anna Nicole Smith; 19. Nelly; 20. Kelly Clarkson; 21. George Clooney; 22. Leonardo Di Caprio; 23. Renée Zellweger; 24. Denzel Washington; 25. Jack Nicholson.

About: Bubblegum Babylon
It’s a billion-dollar business built on fresh-faced looks, catchy hooks, and the best merchandising and marketing that money can buy. "Bubblegum Babylon" goes inside the industry to examine how this pre-teen pop is literally "manufactured" and profiles the songwriters, producers, impresarios and image-makers behind the cold and calculating business of selling the same kinds of bands time and time again. Looking at the successive waves of pop culture this music has spawned since the 1960s - the teen press that champions these acts and the artists who get swept up in it all - the special features all-new exclusive interviews with Backstreet Boys, *N Sync, David Cassidy and his daughter Katie Cassidy, Mandy Moore, The Cowsills, Hanson, MTV’s Carson Daly, Tony DeFranco, Deborah Gibson, Donny Osmond, Danny Bonaduce, Tiffany, Peter Tork, and Jane Weidlin among others.

About Bubblegum Babylon
From Britney Spears to the Backstreet Boys, manufactured teen music is being gobbled up by lipsmacking kids at a phenomenal rate and then spit back out when it quickly loses flavor. More than 40 years after its invention, teen pop has never been more popular.
But few realize that beneath its appealing, feel-good surface, bubblegum pop is a cold and calculating business where, ultimately, the stars themselves are made to be broken.
A cautionary tale about the cost of becoming one of pop’s expendable icons, "Bubblegum Babylon" explores the dark history and culture of carefully-crafted, sticky-sweet pop music directed toward teens - its songs, its bands, its commercialism, its undeniable relevance - from inside the bubblegum music machine.

Jay-Z Scores 5th Chart-Topper With 'Blueprint'

Jay-Z snares his fifth No. 1 this week on The Billboard 200 with "The Blueprint 2: The Gift & the Curse" (Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam). The album sold a mighty 545,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan, and knocks the Eminem-heavy soundtrack to "8 Mile" (Shady/Interscope) down to No. 2 on the chart. Jay-Z's latest, one of five top-10 debuts on The Billboard 200, also arrives at No. 1 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

"The Blueprint 2" bests the first-week total of last year's "The Blueprint," which sold 426,500 units when it came out last September and has sold 2.2 million units to date. The rapper's best sales week came during the holiday season of 2000, when "The Dynasty: Roc La Familia" opened with sales of 558,000 copies.

Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott's "Under Construction" (The Gold Mind/Elektra) hammers its way to No. 3 on sales of 259,000 copies. The total just edges out the first-week total of her "Miss E ... So Addictive," which landed at No. 2 in June 2001 with 251,000 copies sold; the album has since moved 1.6 million copies. "Under Construction" fared slightly better in urban markets, and opens at No. 2 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

Veteran Seattle rock act Pearl Jam sold 166,000 units of its latest Epic album, "Riot Act," to roll onto The Billboard 200 at No. 5. Although hyped by a number of interviews, as well as two appearances last week on "The Late Show With David Letterman," the album sold less in its first week than the band's last, "Binaural," did in June 2000. That set shot to No. 2 on sales of 226,000 copies, and has since sold more than 700,000.

"3D," TLC's first Arista album since the death of Lisa "Left Eye" Lopez, sold 143,000 copies to land at No. 6 on The Billboard 200. That's less than half of the first-week total racked up by the group's "Fanmail" in March 1999. That album opened at No. 1 on the chart with 318,000 units, and has since sold 4.7 million copies. "3D" lands at No. 4 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums tally.

Rock act 3 Doors Down scores its best sales week on The Billboard 200 with "Away From the Sun" (Universal/Republic). The album sold 115,000 copies to rocket to No. 8 on The Billboard 200, a bountiful increase over the No. 104 entry of the band's last, "The Better Life." However, the new set has a long way to go to equal the latter, which has sold 4.7 million copies.

Even with all the new releases, the "8 Mile" soundtrack remained a strong force, suffering a 21% sales drop to 400,000 units and falling 1-2 on The Billboard 200. Justin Timberlake's "Justified" took a 57% hit in its second week and falls 2-4 on the chart, while Christina Aguilera's "Stripped" (RCA) falls 4-7 on a 30% dip to 119,000. Eminem's "The Eminem Show" (Shady/Interscope) slides two positions to No. 9 on sales of 115,000 copies, and Santana's "Shaman" (RCA) rounds out the top-10 with another 110,000 copies sold.

Opening just outside the top-10 at No. 12 is Elton John's "Greatest Hits 1970-2000" (UME/Universal), which sold 100,000 copies, fueled in part by an aggressive TV direct-marketing campaign. Koch's latest World Wrestling Entertainment compilation lands right behind John at No. 13 after selling 86,000 units.

Other notable entries on The Billboard 200 include Saliva's "Back Into Your System" (Def Jam) at No. 19, Sean Paul's "Dutty Rock" (VP/Atlantic) at No. 26, O-Town's "O2" (J Records) at No. 28, Phil Collins' "Testify" (Atlantic) at No. 30, and Fat Joe's "Loyalty" (Atlantic) at No. 31.

The new Billboard 200 chart will be posted tomorrow (Nov. 21) on Billboard.com.

BT Secretive About 'NSYNC Payback On Upcoming Album

11.19.2002 7:53 AM EST

TARZANA, California — BT is hesitant to reveal that his new album features a collaboration with JC Chasez, but not because he's worried about ruining his dance-music credibility.

"I've been playing it in my sets and I'm top secret about who it is, 'cause I want people to judge it on the song, not the whole 'NSYNC affiliation," the DJ/producer explained Friday at his home studio. "People go f---ing nuts, even my super cool friends that would never admit to [liking 'NSYNC]. They're like, 'Wow, this is such a great tune.' And I'm like, 'It's JC.' And they're like, 'Shut the f--- up,' buggin' out."

It's easy to understand why BT's friends don't recognize the Chasez collaboration, which BT is concealing the title of to keep the details secret. The song is heavily influenced by the producer's trance background and is a far cry even from 'NSYNC's "Pop," which BT produced (see "BT Earns 'King Of Dirty Pop' Title With 'NSYNC, Britney Tracks").

BT first met the pop star two years ago when Chasez started showing up at his DJ shows. After forming a friendship, Chasez eventually asked him to work on Celebrity. Busy schedules kept BT from working on Justin Timberlake's solo effort, but he's set aside time next year to work on some cuts for Chasez's album with Alexander Greggs (Brandy, Aaron Carter).

"Alex has that whole R&B sh-- locked down. He gets that, and that's not my world," he said.

In the meantime, BT is putting the finishing touches on a proper follow-up to 2000's Movement in Still Life. Despite losing several tracks when his studio robbed in late 2001, the prolific BT had 42 finished tracks to choose from.

Twelve of the songs stood out, including collaborations with Peter Gabriel ("Our Loving Silence"), the Roots ("Tao of the Machine") and Gang Starr's Guru ("Knowledge Is Self") (see " 'Emotional' New Album, Korn Remixes, More Film Work For BT"). One epic number, "The Great Escape," features guitarist Richard Fortus (Guns N' Roses) on cello.

One song destined for the new LP, "Superfabulousness," is reminiscent of the Movement in Still Life single "Never Gonna Come Back Down" with Mike Doughty, but with an electroclash slant. It features vocals from Girls Against Boys singer Scott McCloud and actress Rose McGowan ("Scream," "Charmed").

"She totally can [sing]," BT said. "I think she sounds a bit like Shirley Manson."

Although it's packed with guest vocalists, the upcoming disc features several tracks sung by BT, who began experimenting with singing on his last album. One song he sings on, the album closer "Animals," samples recordings from deep sea scuba divers.

"I'm really proud of this song lyrically," BT said. "It's a metaphor for the human experience and just talking about how basically that's what we are — animals who can talk and have consciousness, so therefor feel so grandiose and self-important as to justify all different kinds of behavior."

BT's work in progress covers a wide range of emotions, from deeper reflections to party joints, but the DJ promised the album will make sense when you hear the songs in their correct order.

"I try to make records people can listen to from start to finish that encourage you to not, like, flip to track three," he explained. "This is a commitment. You can't read a book or watch TV while you listen to it."

Mariah Remakes Cam'ron Song, Drops Timberlake From New LP

11.19.2002 7:53 AM EST

As a world traveler who's been bouncing around to Paris, Miami, the Bahamas, Jamaica and most recently St. Tropez, Mariah Carey knows a thing or two about being relaxed and inspired by exotic locales.

But none of those spots, she said, have a thing on Italy, where she lived during the summer while recording parts of her upcoming Charmbracelet (December 10).

"This album is probably the most personal album I've ever made," she said. "I basically moved into the studio in Italy. I was writing songs in my little apartment upstairs, then I would go downstairs and record them at night. I had so much to say, [and] this was the perfect outlet for me to do that."

Charmbracelet's likely next single, "The One," was co-written with Jermaine Dupri. "It's a personal song," Mariah said. "I've been collaborating with Jermaine since we did 'Always Be My Baby' in 1996. So every time we do something together it's a special moment for me. The song is kinda about when you feel hurt in relationships in the past, and maybe you meet somebody and you want to get involved but you're unsure whether you should or not."

Mariah said the video will likely be directed by Joseph Kahn (DMX, Janet Jackson) on location in Japan.

For another track, "Oh Boy," Mariah looked to Cam'ron's Come Home With Me LP. "I redid Cam'ron's 'Oh Boy' for the record, and Cam'ron came out to Capri and did his rhyme out there. It's definitely one of my favorites, 'cause I love the original. It was cool to have him out there doing his thing in such a random environment."

Cam'ron wasn't the only member of Roc-A-Fella to record on the album. Jay-Z and Freeway appear on "You Got Me."

" 'You Got Me' is a song produced by Just Blaze," Carey explained. "We went in the studio after I heard the 'Oh Boy' track he did for Cam'ron 'cause I just loved it. This is kind of a signature Just Blaze track. We had Freeway on the song, and Jay-Z was in Capri this year taking a little vacation and he came and heard the song. He said he wanted to get on it."

One person who didn't make the album was Justin Timberlake. The two did work together, but Carey said their collaboration will appear in the future via a remix.

"Justin and I did a song together called 'Yours,' which is probably going to be on the remix of that song," she said. "He did an amazing job on the vocals and I was happy with what he did. It's sort of a romantic, mid tempo R&B record that Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis and I wrote together."

Besides working on her own disc, Carey has also gotten on the new Busta Rhymes album, It Ain't Safe No More, which drops November 26.

Timberlake Breaks Foot, Cancels Two Weeks Of Appearances

11.19.2002 2:24 PM EST

Justin Timberlake now has a broken limb to match the broken heart he sings about on Justified.

'NSYNC's first solo star broke his foot earlier this week while rehearsing for several upcoming television performances and has canceled all promotional events scheduled for the next two weeks. Details on how the injury occurred were not available.

"I am sorely disappointed that I must miss any scheduled events," Timberlake said in a statement. "However, I must adhere to my physician's recommendations and rest. I look forward to being able to perform again and hope to see all my fans soon."

Timberlake will miss an appearance Wednesday at Much Music's "Live@Much" and a co-hosting and performing gig Sunday at the Smash Hits Poll Winners Party in London, among other events.

Timberlake is still scheduled to perform at the Billboard Music Awards on December 9 in Las Vegas. The singer said recently he will not tour behind Justified until next summer (see "Timberlake Will Tour, But Not Until Summer").

The video for "Cry Me a River," Timberlake's second solo single, will premiere later this month (see "Justin Tightlipped About Whether 'River' Flows From Britney").

JC Chasez, Joe, Jadakiss, Alicia Keys On 'Drumline' Soundtrack

11.18.2002

JC Chasez's debut solo recording will be released as a single from next month's "Drumline" soundtrack, but not until Joe and Jadakiss have had their say.

The pair's "I Want a Girl Like You," which hits radio this week, will be the first single from the "Drumline" disc, out December 10. The song, like most on the album, was produced by Atlanta hit maker Dallas Austin, who is executive producer and executive music producer of the movie. A video for the track was shot on November 8 and 9 in Los Angeles, and directed by Erik White.

The second single from the album will be Chasez's "Blowing Me Up (With Her Love)," which will hit radio December 9. Chasez recorded at least four songs for consideration for the movie, but only "Blowing Me Up (With Her Love)" will be on the soundtrack. The rest may appear on a future solo album (see " 'NSYNC's JC Chasez Records Solo Tracks, Considers Album").

"Drumline," inspired in part by Austin's background as a high school drumliner in Atlanta, tells the story of a hip-hop drummer from Harlem who moves to Atlanta to be a drummer on a university's marching band drumline. The film opens January 10.

Track list for "Drumline" soundtrack, according to Jive:
AT&T Drumline (The Senate) - "D&K Cadence"
Q "The Kid" f/ Jermaine Dupri - "Been Away"
Joe f/ Jadakiss - "I Want a Girl Like You"
JC Chasez - "Blowin' Me Up (With Her Love)"
Petey Pablo - "Club Banger"
Syleena Johnson - "Faithful to You"
Alicia Keys - "Butterflyz (KrucialKeys Remix)"
Monica - "Uh Oh"
Raheem DeVaughn - "My Own Thing"
Nivea - "What You Waitin' For"
Nappy Roots - "Peanuts"
Nick Cannon - "I'm Scared of You"
Too Short & Bun B - "Shout it Out"
Trick Daddy f/ Deuce Poppi, Tre+6 & Unda Presha - "Let's Go"
"Marching Band Medley"

Kurupt Hits Big Screen, Talks Lisa Lopes Album, Tha Row
11.11.2002 3:52 PM EST

Don't look for lyrical assassin Kurupt to be shooting off at the mouth on his own album anytime soon. He's focusing on his acting career and helping Suge Knight put out some long-discussed releases from Tha Row.

"Right now I'm just sitting behind that desk, I'm planning on chilling out for a little bit," he said last week, via phone from Los Angeles. "I'm going to concentrate on these movies and running this company side by side with Suge. I'm the Senior Vice President of Death Row.

"We're patching up Crooked I's album right now," he continued. "The first release is going to be Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopez's album (see "Suge Knight Plans To Release Left Eye's 'N.I.N.A.' LP"). The N.I.N.A. album, that's the first record we are going to release from the company."

Kurupt said Suge is going to have the final decision on the album's title. He wasn't sure of the LP's release date because Missy Elliott and 'NSYNC were still adding guest vocals to tracks ("We just really waiting on those last two records before we lock down the album and call it complete," he said). He was certain, however, that the first single was called "Untouchable."

"The first single is basically Tupac and Lisa," Kurupt revealed. "All Lisa wanted was a record with Pac. She loved Pac. They were real close friends. And we brought that dream to life. We felt it was only right that the first release on this record is in dedication to the two fallen soldiers from our company."

Another song off the album Kurupt is excited about is "Friends."

"["Friends"] is really about a relationship with a girl and a boy, showing how they separated and how no matter what, the girl was with him," he said. "She is really sincere about herself with him. He's out there f---ing around. They break up and even through all this heartbreak and all this name-calling he was doing with her, she still accepted him back in the end. It's such a big record. Its what I would describe as a classic TLC record. This is like Lisa's 'Waterfalls.' It's so big."

Tha Row didn't want to make a big deal loading the long-anticipated album up with cameos.

"We kept it really closed circuit; we didn't want to Hollywood it out," Kurupt explained. "We just let certain people get involved into it. People that we know Lisa respected, business or musically-wise. Or you gotta be a friend of Lisa's. Missy was real close with Lisa, and Lisa loved some 'NSYNC, so we were definitely with that right there. But as far just loading it up with a gang of people to make a gang of noise, nah. We really want everybody to concentrate on Lisa. She was not for play. And when people hear this record, they are going to see a whole different side of Lisa rap-wise because she really put that pen to work."

When he gets a chance to get outside of the office, chances are you'll find him on the movie set. "Half Past Dead" (see "Ja Rule Teaming Up With Steven Seagal For Action Film"), where he co-stars as Twitch with Steven Seagal, Morris Chestnut and Ja Rule hits theaters November 15. Meanwhile, he's filming "Two Cops" with Harrison Ford, Master P., Gladys Knight and Josh Hartnett (see "Master P, Kurupt, Outkast's Dre Do 'Hollywood Homicide'"). That movie and "Dark Blue," where Kurupt shares screen time with Ving Rhames and Kurt Russell, are slated to drop in 2003.

Can't Nudge '8 Mile' From No. 1

The Shady/Interscope soundtrack to "8 Mile" maintains its grip on the No. 1 position of The Billboard 200 for a second-straight week, withstanding a mighty charge from Justin Timberlake's "Justified" (Jive). Sales of the Eminem-heavy soundtrack slipped 28% to 508,000 units, according to Nielsen SoundScan, but that total was still enough to fend off "Justified," which sold 439,000 units and bows at No. 2. The two albums hold the same positions on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

As impressive as the numbers for Timberlake's set are, the 'N Sync member's solo debut expectedly fell far short of the 1.9 million units sold by the group's most recent Jive release, 2001's "Celebrity."

Yet in a battle of solo efforts from boy band members, Timberlake is the clear winner. As "Justified" debuts at No. 2, Backstreet Boy Nick Carter's solo Jive debut "Now or Never" plummets from No. 17 to No. 63 in its second week on The Billboard 200. Timberlake's first single, "Like I Love You," made it into the top-15 of Billboard's Hot 100 last week; Carter's "Help Me," meanwhile, managed only a No. 36 peak last month on Billboard's Top 40 Mainstream chart.

"Justified" is one of four top-10 debuts on The Billboard 200, with a comfortable lead over the No. 3 entry of U2's "The Best of 1990-2000/The B-Sides" (Interscope). That two-disc set sold 185,000 units; a single-disc version that does not include a compilation of B-sides, was released yesterday (Nov. 12). The band's last two-disc greatest hits set, a collection of songs from 1980-1990, arrived at No. 2 in November 1998 on sales of 237,000 units.

Jaheim's "Still Ghetto" (Warner Bros.) lands at No. 8 on The Billboard 200 on sales of 111,000 units, a stronger entry than last year's "Ghetto Love." The latter sold 80,000 units in its first week to arrive at No. 9. On the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, Jaheim's set debuts at No. 3.

The latest live effort from the Dave Matthews Band, "Live at Folsom Field" (RCA) soars to No. 9 on a sales of 110,000 units. The number isn't quite as strong as the 131,000 copies posted by "Live in Chicago 12.19.98," which entered at No. 6 at this time last year.

Christina Aguilera's "Stripped" (RCA) suffered a 49% sales hit to 168,000 units and falls two two slots to No. 4, while Santana's "Shaman" dips one to No. 5 after a 20% slide to 140,000 units. Faith Hill's "Cry" (Warner Bros.), which is No. 1 on Billboard's Top Country Albums roundup for a fourth-straight week, holds at No. 6 on The Billboard 200. With Eminem's movie riding high, his album "The Eminem Show" (Shady/Interscope) saw a 14% gain to 115,000 units, earning it a one-rung boost to No. 7. Interscope's self-titled Nirvana collection, saw a 53% sales slide to 109,000 units, and slides from No. 3 to No. 10.

Another three new albums land inside the top-20 of The Billboard 200 , led by Andrea Bocelli's collaboration with the London Symphony Orchestra, "Sentimento" (Phillips), at No. 12. His last album, "Cieli di Toscana," performed similarly, soaring to No. 11 last November. On the other end of the musical scale, Detroit's Insane Clown Posse arrives at No. 15 with "The Wraith: Shangri-La" (Riviera), and U.K. singer/songwriter David Gray notches his highest album chart-position to date with the No. 17 bow of "A New Day at Midnight" (ATO).

Elsewhere, "Irv Gotti Presents the Remixes" (Universal) arrives at No. 24, the Wallflowers' "Red Letter Days" (Interscope) enters at No. 32, Alison Krauss + Union Station dock at No. 36 with their latest live collection from Rounder, and Deborah Cox's "The Morning After" (J Records) settles in at No. 38.

Tony Bennett's collaboration with k.d. lang, "A Wonderful World" (Columbia), glides to No. 41 to give Bennett" his best showing on The Billboard 200 since 1966 when "The Move Song Album" hit No. 18. "A Wonderful World," a collection of interpretations of Louis Armstrong songs, was heavily promoted on television last week, with a feature on "20/20" and appearances by the two on "Live With Regis and Kelly" and "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno."

Further down the chart, Alan Jackson's "Let It Be Christmas" (Arista) arrives at No. 52, and thanks to the increased focus on the artist after his five wins at last week's CMA Awards, his album "Drive" receives a major boost. That former No. 1 set cruises 94-23 on a whopping 293% burst to 50,000 units.

All of Billboard's latest charts will be posted tomorrow (Nov. 14) on Billboard.com.

A cautionary tale about the cost of becoming one of pop’s expendable icons, "Bubblegum Babylon" explores the dark history and culture of carefully-crafted, sticky-sweet pop music directed toward teens - its songs, its bands, its commercialism, its undeniable relevance - from inside the bubblegum music machine

'8 Mile' Soundtrack Edges Timberlake To Top Billboard Albums Chart
11.13.2002 3:14 PM EST

Despite a strong first-week showing from Justin Timberlake's solo debut, the "8 Mile" soundtrack will stay a stride ahead of the 'NSYNC singer on next week's Billboard albums chart.

Timberlake Justified his #2 position with more than 439,000 copies sold, according to SoundScan figures released Wednesday. However, fueled by the adrenaline-inducing single "Lose Yourself" and the momentum associated with the film topping weekend box-office charts (see " '8 Mile' Goes The Dista nce With Record-Breaking Opening Weekend""), the Eminem-stamped soundtrack bested the NSYNCer's LP by more than 68,000 copies to bring its two-week total to more than 1.2 million.

Eminem's über-presence in the media last week made more than 114,000 people realize that he's not just a movie star — he's got an album out, too. Sales to those catching on late in the game allowed The Eminem Show to continue its 25-week engagement in the top 10. The LP actually increased its weekly sales tally from last week's 99,000, nudging it up a slot on to #7. In all, the rapper's third major-label album clocks in with total sales upwards of 6.5 million.

Picked from hits of the last decade, including "Beautiful Day," "One" and "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of," U2's "The Best Of 1990-2000 will debut at #3 with more than 184,000 copies sold. The landing surprised many chart watchers, not the least of whom is Christina Aguilera, whose second album, Stripped, will drop to #4 (168,000) in its second week.

Jaheim got into the #8 slot with Still Ghetto (see "Jaheim Shooting For 10 Million With Still Ghetto"), his follow-up to last year's Ghetto Love, while fans are still gettin' into the Dave Matthews Band big time. The group's Live at Folsom Field - Boulder, Colorado, which will follow at #9, continues their streak of high-charting LPs. Since 1994's breakthrough Under the Table and Dreaming, eight of their nine full-length albums — including live records — have placed in the top 10. Listener Supported, released in 1999, came in at #15.

Elsewhere in the chart's top 10, Santana's Shaman will slip a spot to #5; Faith Hill's Cry will maintain its #6 position for the second week, and Nirvana's greatest hits collection, Nirvana, will bring up the rear, falling seven spots from its #3 debut. Juggalos nationwide united to give the Insane Clown Posse their highest chart debut in three years. The harrowing harlequins' latest album, The Wraith: Shangri-La (see "Insane Clown Posse Find Light (And Hotties, Homies, Faygo) At End Of Tunnel"), will land at #15 with more than 76,000 copies sold. Only 1999's The Amazing Jeckel Brothers, — which came in at #4 and sold nearly twice as much — proved a more successful debut for the clown-faced couple.

"The Other Side," the first single from acoustic softie David Gray's latest album, A New Day at Midnight, helped propel the new release into top 20 territory. The British bard's fifth album will land at #17 after selling more than 71,000 copies in its first week.

In July, he presented the Inc. Now Irv Gotti has served more dishes with a new twist from his posse (see "Irv Gotti Shooting Ja Rule, Bobby Brown, Charli; Reveals Remixes List "), and hip-hop heads are salivating for a taste. Irv Gotti Presents the Remixes, featuring new takes on tunes by Ashanti ("Unfoolish"), Toni Braxton ("Me and My Boyfriend"), and Ja Rule ("No One Does It Better"), among others, will come in at #24 with more than 46,000 copies sold.

The Wallflowers' make their second attempt to match the success of their 1996 breakthrough, Bringing Down the Horse, with Red Letter Days (see "Red Letter Days Shows Wallflowers Aren't Leaving The Dance"), which will place at #32 with more than 38,000 copies sold. Unfortunately for Jakob Dylan and company, 2000's Breach fared far better after its first week in stores, having come in at #13 with more than 80,000 copies sold.

Other notable debuts on next week's chart include Italian opera singer Andrea Bocelli's Sentimento at #12 (98,000); "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack alum Alison Krauss' Live at #36; classic rockers Boston's first full-length album of new material in eight years, Corporate Ame rica, at #42; Eric Clapton's two-disc tour re-visitation, One More Car, One More Rider, at #43; Missy Elliott and Timbaland protégé Ms. Jade's Girl Interrupted at #51; R&B crooner Brian McKnight's 13-year retrospective, From There to Here 1989-2002, at #62; living legend Johnny Cash's latest covers album, Amercian IV: The Man Comes Around, at #70; Grandes Exitos, a best-off culled from Shakira's three Spanish-language albums, at #80; Björk's Greatest Hits at #115; Badly Drawn Boy's uncharacteristically peppy pop album (see " Badly Drawn Boy Salutes Cobain, Turns Down Madonna"), Have You Fed the Fish? at #135; and Ours' second LP, Precious, at #187.
