JC Chasez Wants Your Opinion, But Keep It On The Download
11.07.2002 7:56 AM EST

JC Chasez is recording solo material and he wants you to critique it.

The 'NSYNC star said on Friday that he's close to releasing some material on OnlyArtist.com, the new Web venture he was promoting on his T-shirt at the MTV Video Music Awards.

"I am releasing original material on there as an experiment, a writer's experiment," Chasez explained at a party to celebrate the release of Justin Timberlake's debut solo album (Click for photos from the party). "What happens is I'll release a song or whatever, then I get feedback, and like ... it's an open forum for criticism on writing ideas and stuff."

Currently the site offers only a registration form, but a full launch is planned.

In the meantime, one of Chasez's songs, "Blowing Me Up (With Her Love)," will be released to radio in early December. The song will be included on the soundtrack to the upcoming movie "Drumline," due December 10 (see " 'NSYNC's JC Chasez Records Solo Tracks, Considers Album").

Though Dallas Austin, producer of "Drumline" and its soundtrack, said he expected Chasez to release a solo album, JC said his Web site is his top priority. Second to Timberlake, Chasez has been the most hands-on member of 'NSYNC, co-writing material and standing out in concert (see " 'NSYNC Tour Opener: It's The Justin And JC Show!").

Timberlake's Justified was released Tuesday (see "Timberlake, Janet Jackson Make Sexy Pair On Justified").

Timberlake Will Tour, But Not Until Summer
11.07.2002 7:56 AM EST

Now that Justified is in stores, fans may be wondering whether Justin Timberlake will tour behind the record or go back to the studio.

And the answer is ... both.

Timberlake said Friday at the release party for Justified that he'll definitely hit the road, but his Jive Records spokesperson said it wouldn't be until late next summer (Click for photos from the party).

When Timberlake returns to the studio in the meantime, it may or may not be with 'NSYNC. Asked if the group would release another album, he answered, "I think so. You know, you kind of have to follow the creativity wherever it goes."

Timberlake later implied that his creativity is heading in the way of collaborations. Although he wouldn't reveal any details, it has been confirmed that he'll be featured on Mariah Carey's new Charmbracelet (see "Timberlake, Jay-Z, Cam'ron Contribute To Mariah Carey LP").

"I'm working on some stuff right now, but I don't want to say too much about it, just in case," he said. "You know, sometimes legal stuff gets in the way of that. I've been working with a lot of people, though."

For the last few weeks, however, Timberlake has spent all his time promoting Justified, including a concert in New York on Tuesday night (see "Justin, Avril And More Celebrate 'What's Next' At Teen People Concert") and his lavish release party, which featured go-go dancers and an ice sculpture of the "JT" logo on the CD.

"I have to thank the guys in 'NSYNC for that because if we wouldn't have sold those records, Jive wouldn't have had the money to make this party happen, so thanks, guys," Timberlake joked at the party.

Although you might expect him to be a little nervous about the album, especially going up against the "8 Mile" soundtrack, Timberlake said all he's feeling is confidence.

"I made the best possible album that I could make," he explained. "I'm happy with it. I'm not going to sit here and say it's the new sound and it's the whatever you wanna call it. It's just totally me and it's fun. I can make that promise. It is a fun record to listen to."

Justified's second single, "Cry Me a River," will be released later this month (see "Justin Tightlipped About Whether 'River' Flows From Britney").

The Shady/Interscope soundtrack to "8 Mile" debuts at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 and Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums tally, on sales of 702,000 units, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The set, the companion piece to the Eminem-starring film of the same name, wasn't expected to perform as well as "The Eminem Show," which sold 1.32 million units in its first full week of release earlier this year. But it has already spawned a No. 1 Hot 100 single for Eminem with "Lose Yourself."

In a week of major releases, "8 Mile" is one of five albums to debut inside the top-10. At No. 2 with 330,000 units is Christina Aguilera's "Stripped" (RCA), and right behind at No. 3 is Interscope's long-awaited self-titled Nirvana hits set. Aguilera, now sporting an even more ribald look and some newfound songwriting abilities, previously reached No. 1 with her 1999 self-titled debut. "Nirvana," containing the No. 1 rock airplay single "You Know You're Right," marks the band's first appearance at the top of The Billboard 200 since live album "From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah" landed at No. 1 in 1996.

Country act Rascal Flatts scores a career best with the No. 5 entry of "Melt." The Lyric Street album sells 169,000 units and also races to No. 1 on Billboard's Top Country Albums roundup. Previously, Rascal Flatts have not been higher than No. 43 on The Billboard 200, but "Melt" has been propelled by the success of "These Days," which last week breached the top-40 of the Hot 100.

Tori Amos' "Scarlet's Walk," her first set since jumping from Atlantic to Epic, strolls to No. 7 on The Billboard 200 on sales of 107,000 units, falling short of the No. 4 entry of last year's "Strange Little Girls," a covers set that sold 111,000 units in its debut week.

With all of the top-10 debuts, last week's No. 1, Santana's "Shaman" (Arista), dips to No. 4 on a 41% slide to 175,000 units. Faith Hill's "Cry" (Warner Bros.) takes a 24% hit to 147,000 units and falls 4-6, Avril Lavigne's "Let Go" (Arista) sinks one slot to No. 9, and the Dixie Chicks round out the top-10 with "Home" (Monument/Columbia), which drops from No. 6.

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony enter just outside the top-10 at No. 12 with "Thug World Order" (Sony). The album, which arrives at No. 3 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums count, sold 82,000 units, a hefty decline from 2000's "BTHNResurrection," which moved 280,000 units in its first week to arrive at No. 2 on The Billboard 200.

Other newcomers inside the top-20 include Lil Jon and Eastside Boyz with "Kings of Crunk" (TVT) at No. 15, Backstreet Boy Nick Carter's solo debut "Now or Never" (Jive) at No. 17, and Tank's "One Man" (Universal) at No. 20.

Elsewhere, Shaggy's "Lucky Day" (MCA), the follow-up to the 6.5 million selling "Hot Shot," arrives at a disappointing No. 24. Icelandic rock act Sigur Ros notches its first appearance on The Billboard 200 at No. 52 with "( )" (MCA). The group's Shortlist Prize-winning 1999 set "Agaetis Byrjun" has sold 123,000 units to date.

-- Todd Martens, L.A.

I was positive that Christina would be #1 this week but she didn't sell even half of what Eminem did. What the!? Stores in my area were selling her album for less than $10 and I thought that would boost sales. Hrmm... And Nick is in at #17. How do you guys think Justin will do this week? If I had known Rascall Flatts had a new album out I would have gotten it. They are my fav country group. *ducking out of range of people who might throw rocks at me for liking some country music. LOL*

Hey everyone! I bought Justin's album yesterday. Overall I think it's pretty good. My favorite song is "Take it From Here." I think it's so beautiful! I like Justin's voice altogether, but I love it when he does slower songs, and this album seems to have more upbeat songs. But I liked it. It's just weird to not have the other guys voices along with his. I think that there's a lot of allusions to the break up with Britney. Just something I kind of noticed. Anyway, I just wanted to share my little listening experience of Justin's first solo album!

Hope everyone is doing well! :) Take care.

Hey y'all...sorry I haven't been able to post in a long time. I lost my job the last day of September and since then have sort of slipped into a depression of some sort. I've been looking for jobs and such but life has been difficult...even those I wasn't fired (I was "laid off") it still felt as tho I was. It's a sucky feeling and I just haven't felt much like doing really anything. So I apologize for not being around updating the birthday lists and such. I am getting better...but a month with no job has taken it's toll...boredom has set in and there are days when no end seems in sight...however I have been in a few interviews and I will keep you all updated on what happens.
Anyway...I hope you are all doing well. Take care of yourselves...
Much love...

This series combines artist interviews, photos and performance footage to tell the story of these controversial moments, from the assasination of John Lennon and Sinead O'Connor tearing up a photo of the Pope to Madonna's "Sex" book and Ozzy Osbourne biting the head off of a live dove.
VH1's "100 Most Shocking Moments in Rock & Roll" defines and analyzes those lighthearted, amazing, provocative, tragic or just-plain-surprising events that stopped time, grabbed worldwide headlines, and burned themselves into the collective consciousness of music fans over a half-century of rock history. Topping the list is the 1980 assassination of rock legend John Lennon, which still reverberates throughout the music world more than twenty years later.
Features exclusive new interviews with Boy George, Chuck D, Marianne Faithfull, Talking Heads' Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth, Sammy Hagar, Moby, Spice Girls, Steve Vai and Dee Dee Ramone, and many others. Sugar Ray's Mark McGrath is host.

Teen-pop biz banks on Justin
Mon Oct 28, 7:49 AM ET
Elysa Gardner USA TODAY

NEW YORK -- Justin Timberlake (news) admits he made a fool of himself over Kelly Clarkson (news).

The American idol from 'N Sync (news - web sites) met the American Idol winner recently while doing a photo shoot in Los Angeles. ''All of a sudden, this feeling came over me, and I started spitting all this stuff out,'' Timberlake recalls. ''I asked her, 'Are you OK? Are they working you too hard? Do you feel like you're getting to do your own thing?' ''

Timberlake shakes his head. ''I'm probably saying too much, but it might have had something to do with Lou Pearlman,'' he says, referring to the boy-band guru who managed 'N Sync during its rise to fame, then fell out with the group. ''I remembered what it was like for us in the beginning, and I would hate to see bad things happen to her. I'm sure she'll be fine, but when I saw her, I suddenly became this weird caretaker or something. I felt like her big brother, you know?''

In fact, at 21, Timberlake is only one year older than Clarkson. But in terms of showbiz experience, the former Mouseketeer points out, he's an old pro.

''I've been doing this since I was 12, and 'N Sync has been together for seven years,'' Timberlake says, his lanky frame hunched over a huge bowl of room-service pasta. ''I honestly never expected things to get as big as they did. At the end of our last tour, we were booking stadiums with no new album out. It just got crazy, and I think we all knew we had to take a break, to figure things out.''

For Timberlake, that period of reflection bore fruit in a solo album that is bound to be one of the most closely watched and carefully scrutinized CDs in recent memory. Due Nov. 5, Justified is already a source of intense speculation among industry insiders, many now looking to Timberlake to prove that a fading bubble-gum-pop movement can spawn an artist with broader appeal and more staying power.

''This is a make-or-break record -- not just for Justin, but for the whole teen-pop scene,'' says Rolling Stone contributor Rob Sheffield. ''The problem these kids are having is that, at this point, most of their fans are about 10 years younger than they are. This is Justin's attempt to find an audience closer to his own age. And there's a feeling that if anyone can do it, he can.''

Certainly, it should come as no surprise that Timberlake is the first member of the world's foremost teen-pop group to release his own CD. (He stresses that the album does not signal the end of his association with 'N Sync's Joey Fatone (news), Lance Bass (news), JC Chasez (news) and Chris Kirkpatrick (news).) Since the band's meteoric ascent began in the late '90s, Timberlake has emerged as the act's most prominent voice, both literally and creatively. Timberlake's input as a songwriter and producer was especially evident on 'N Sync's most recent album, 2001's Celebrity, which found the band incorporating more of the hip-hop and contemporary R&B textures favored by older teens and young adults.

Rawer and more sophisticated

With Justified, Timberlake moves further in that direction. He co-wrote all 13 songs, teaming up with some of the most popular and respected writer/producers in urban music, among them Timbaland, Bryan McKnight and The Neptunes, who also worked with Timberlake on Celebrity.

The results sound at once rawer and more purposefully sophisticated than 'N Sync's material. The first single and current Top 10 hit Like I Love You features a crackling acoustic arrangement and vaguely dissonant chords. Other tunes are similarly lean and sharp, with syncopated rhythms and soul-based flourishes.

Though some may view this approach as a bid for more street credibility or critical acclaim, Timberlake says opportunism played no role in his choices. Rather, he describes Justified as the product of influences rooted in his childhood, along with his desire for autonomy that early experiences in 'N Sync nourished.

''I grew up listening to Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway, Al Green, Michael Jackson (news), Prince,'' says Timberlake. ''If you know that, then this album makes perfect sense. It's not a departure from anything I've done, because I haven't done anything on my own. 'N Sync is great, but this is different -- not only from 'N Sync, but from anything out there. I knew that when people first heard Like I Love You, the consensus would be, 'What is this?' People aren't used to hearing me in this way, and it may take them a few listens to get it.''

Barry Weiss, president of Timberlake/'N Sync label Jive Records, dismisses the notion that Timberlake's boy-band baggage will be a liability. ''People have to understand that real artists can come out of this genre. Look, Michael Jackson came out of the Jackson 5, and George Michael (news) came out of Wham!''

Weiss isn't the only one making these comparisons. Cory Robbins, founder of the hip-hop label Profile Records and president of the dance-music company Robbins Entertainment, says that Like I Love You ''is the record Jackson should have made'' his last time at bat. And others have noted Jacko's influence in the sinuous, falsetto-laced vocals on Justified.

But the sandy-haired, blue-eyed-soul crooner from Wham! may invite more obvious comparisons to Timberlake -- and a few telling contrasts. When George Michael's solo debut Faith was released in 1987, few expected it would establish him as a singer/songwriter with real clout. But a big factor in Michael's achievement was a sense of independence that's become increasingly rare in today's hyper-collaborative pop world, where stars trying to assert their own visions often seek out help from tested guides.

''When George Michael made Faith, he didn't hire the top R&B producers of the day to help him,'' says Rob Sheffield. ''He went out on the limb himself. On the other hand, there was a lot less pressure on him than there is on Justin. I mean, no one expected George Michael to rescue the music industry.''

If the pressure is getting to Timberlake, he's showing no signs of it this afternoon. Grabbing lunch in his hotel suite, the Tennessee-bred singer is a model of laid-back Southern decorum. He politely asks for a moment of silence so that he can pray before digging into his penne with cheese, explaining, ''I wouldn't say I'm a religious person, but I'm a spiritual person.''

A promise to Britney

Timberlake exhibits similar poise and reserve when asked about his personal life. Regarding the breakup of his very public romance with Britney Spears (news) earlier this year, he says, ''I made a promise to her I would not talk about it.'' Nor is he eager to give clues to those looking to glean information about the couple's split from the lyrics on Justified. ''Some of the songs are autobiographical, but about half are fantasy -- like, 'What would I do if I met this hot girl,' or whatever.''

Spears and Timberlake still talk occasionally, he says, and he keeps in touch with her family. ''I've known Britney since I was 12, so of course I'm not going to cut off all ties. They've been a big part of my life.'' Timberlake says he is especially close to Spears' 11-year-old sister, Jamie Lynn, an actress on Nickelodeon's All That. ''I did a sketch with her on the show. Now, that girl is going to be a star. What a cutie.''

Predictably, Timberlake declines to comment on rumors linking him to older cuties such as Janet Jackson (news) or Alyssa Milano (news). (Timberlake's publicist denies a report that Timberlake and Milano are engaged.) ''I'm single. I am single,'' he says, as if repeating a mantra. ''If I was an item with somebody, I wouldn't say so for a good few months. But I'm single.''

He later adds, smiling, ''You could say that, right now, I'm dating Justified. This album is my new girlfriend. It's the biggest priority in my life, and I poured my heart and soul into it.''

Justified is being lavished with equal affection by the head of Timberlake's label, who relays his marketing strategy with the zeal of a military dictator plotting world domination. ''We're going to attack Justin's primary audience first,'' says Barry Weiss. ''But there will be a massive campaign, and we have every intention of hitting as many markets as possible. Of course, we'll do it in a natural, organic way.''

While Like I Love You was shipped to Top 40 and rhythm crossover radio -- where Jive promotions executive Joe Riccitelli says it's been among the top five most requested songs since Labor Day -- the follow-up single, Cry Me a River, due Nov. 11, also will go out to mainstream urban stations. And on Nov. 9, Justified will be the focus of the premiere episode of albumLAUNCH, a new MTV series offering a behind-the-scenes look as stars make and promote CDs.

''The industry needs this right now,'' Weiss says. ''They need more artists that can hit many different sectors. Eminem (news - web sites) hits five different demographics, and I think Justin will, too. The goal is for Justin to have a huge solo record, and then for 'N Sync to follow that with the biggest record they've ever had.''

But as Timberlake polishes off his lunch and prepares for yet another photo shoot, he relays his hopes for the future in less grandiose terms.

''What makes 'N Sync work is everybody's individuality,'' he says. ''I knew that if we took time off, we would each shine in different ways. I would assume we'll get back in the studio some time next year. But right now, I'm giving this new album everything I've got. This is a dream that became a reality, and I consider myself very blessed.''

Justin Timberlake "Justify My Love"

-- Jon Wiederhorn, with additional reporting by Jeff Cornell and SuChin Pak

As he bounded into the skyscraper studio to talk about his first solo album, Justified, Justin Timberlake looked to be in high spirits when he warmed up the room with a brainteaser.

"A man lives on the 45th floor of a building," he began. "Every day when he goes to work, he gets in the elevator and hits 'lobby.' But when he comes home, he hits '15' and walks the rest of the way up. Why?" Smiling devilishly, Timberlake said the answer would be revealed after the interview was over.

Clean-shaven and bubbling with boyish charm, Timberlake looked as eager and excited as he was during his first American interviews with 'NSYNC over four years ago. He wore a black T-shirt under a red Pony warm-up jacket with the sleeves pulled up to his elbows, revealing a round black watch surrounded by diamonds on his left wrist and a blue and white wristband and diamond bracelet on his right. He joked with the producers and camera crew, repeatedly impersonating Dustin Hoffman's autistic character from "Rain Man" and smiled warmly as he greeted everyone on the location. Yet this is a newer, more experienced and more adventurous Justin, and his look and attitude belie the frustration, sexual discovery and personal growth he's experienced over the past year.

Not only did he end a three-year romance with Britney Spears, but he also stepped out from his multiplatinum pop group to record a racy, experimental dance album influenced by rap and '70s
R&B. In the process, he demonstrated a new taste for authority by hiring P. Diddy to produce a track for the disc, then axing it — much to Puffy's dismay.

Judging from the pulsing beats, sensual vocals and suggestive lyrics of songs like "(And She Said) Take Me Now" and "Rock Your Body," it would be easy to assume the babyfaced singer had outgrown his squeaky-clean finery and wanted to slip into something more revealing. But while Timberlake agreed that the musical changes on Justified stemmed from personal experiences, he stressed that he wasn't consciously trying to conjure a new image.

"This record was probably the most organic experience I ever had in making music or being creative," he said, hands clasped in his lap. "It's definitely honest. This album is completely me. The lyrics are just the way I say things when I get into those moods that are described in the songs. It's just me on a platter, which is kind of scary."

So, what's in the Justin du jour? It's a tantalizing medley of palpable emotions, flavorful sensations and delectable sounds that chronicle Timberlake's mindframe from the time he and Britney split to the point where he started hitting the clubs and dating again.

"I went through some real changes while I was making this record," Justin explained, crossing his right leg over his left. "There's definitely a continuity there. To hear the person who started off and the person who finished, I hear two different people."

In simple terms, the person who started off was frustrated and angry, devastated from an ugly breakup with a girl he thought he'd be with for the rest of his life.

"I was feeling angst in the form of heartbreak, and it was eating me alive," said Justin, adding that he started working on Justified as a sort of therapy. "Writing a couple of songs on the record helped me deal with things. It was like a whole big spa treatment. I just got better and better and at the end of the record I was like this person who had just let it all go and said, 'Wow, I'm over it. I'm past this. I'm in a good place.' "

Helping Timberlake find that place were hotshot producers the Neptunes and Timbaland, whose individual styles and sounds mark Justified like thumbprints. The Neptunes' Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, producers for the likes of Jay-Z, Mystikal and Ludacris, lend a sultry flow to songs like "Nothin' Else" and "Last Night." And various cuts, including the album opener "Señorita," contain breathy, spoken-word passages reminiscent of Britney's "I'm a Slave 4 U" (which was also a Neptunes production). Timbaland's tracks combine epileptic beats, unconventional songwriting and lots of layering with Timberlake's soaring vocals. As different as the producers are, they both imbued the singer's music with a more grownup, grinding dancefloor vibe. A hint of his more urban environment came with the Neptunes-produced single "Like I Love You," which blends Michael Jackson-circa-Off the Wall vocals with rapping by the Clipse.

"Initially people will be surprised to hear my voice in this venue, but I think at the same time people will recognize that it's not contrived at all," Timberlake said, his serious expression a sober bid for street cred. "I grew up on Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, and Al Green lives down the street from me in Memphis — literally five minutes from me. That's what I grew up on. And hip-hop is what determines pop culture right now."

While the rap and R&B references stand out like cleavage in a Mariah video, Timberlake said Justified was also inspired by a genre of music even whiter than 'NSYNC's.

"I love the Eagles and Steve Miller Band," the singer admitted. "On 'Like I Love You,' the guitar comes in and there's a crazy rhythm, and initially that reminded me of the Doobie Brothers on acid." Timberlake stopped talking and broke into a human beatbox rhythm, followed by a boy-noise impression of an electric guitar before singing the Doobies' "Long Train Running" in falsetto.

"I don't know if people will get this, but the way I treated my vocals in the verse of 'Take It From Here' was like [Radiohead's] Thom Yorke or [Coldplay's] Chris Martin," he added. "To me, Radiohead and Coldplay are the modern-day Beatles. I would love to do a duet with Chris Martin someday. That would just be something so original, and I know I could pull it off. It may not happen, but it doesn't hurt to put it out there."

While no members of the Britrock elite appear on Justified, Janet Jackson and Bubba Sparxxx managed to pitch in. Timberlake recruited the Underdogs to produce "Still on My Brain," Brian McKnight for "Never Again" and P. Diddy on "Love Don't Love Me," but when it came time to select the final track list, P. Diddy's ditty didn't make the cut.

"I just thought it was too friendly," said Timberlake, addressing an obviously touchy subject. "I felt there were songs that I did that were too friendly and they weren't big enough and didn't have enough balls as far as sonics. I think 'Love Don't Love Me' is a surefire song to get hella buzz on the radio, but that doesn't mean you should use it on this project."

'NSYNC's JC Chasez Records Solo Tracks, Considers Album
10.10.2002 4:34 PM EDT

Justin Timberlake is not the only 'NSYNCer releasing solo material this year.

JC Chasez will have at least one song on the soundtrack for the upcoming movie "Drumline" and appears to be well into his own album.

Dallas Austin, who's producing the film and the soundtrack, has recorded four songs with Chasez, including "Blowin' Me Up," a strong contender to be the soundtrack's first single.

"We've been doing some great, great material," Austin said Wednesday from his Atlanta home. "At first he wasn't going to do a record, but I think now he's kind of interested, so we'll probably just keep recording. We were just writing songs for the movie and we caught a niche and it was like, 'Oh sh--, this is cool for you, let's keep going.' "

So far Chasez and Austin have recorded fun, fast-paced songs and mid-tempo ballads.

"It's back to George Michael and Prince and that '80s era, where even though you had up-tempos, they still had songs to them, they had a lot of attitude," Austin explained. "It was a trip because we didn't realize how far away music had gotten from doing real songs until we started working on this stuff."

The soundtrack — due December 10, according to Jive Records — will also include Alicia Keys, Monica, Petey Pablo and Jive newcomer Nivea, who was featured on Mystikal's "Danger (Been So Long)."

A collaboration between Joe and Jadakiss called "A Girl Like You" and the first teaming of fellow Atlanta producers Austin and Jermaine Dupri, "Been Away," were recorded for the album as well.

"Drumline" is based on Austin's experiences in his high school marching band and is due in theaters January 10. Nick Cannon (Nickelodeon's "The Nick Cannon Show"), Zoe Saldana ("Crossroads") and Orlando Jones ("The Replacements") star in the movie.

Second to Timberlake, Chasez has been the most hands-on member of 'NSYNC, co-writing material and standing out in concert (see "'NSYNC Tour Opener: It's The Justin And JC Show!").

Timberlake's Justified is due November 5 (see "Timberlake, Janet Jackson Make Sexy Pair On Justified").

What's Next For 'Nsync?
BY ZENA BURNS

Worried about the future of 'Nsync? Don't be. Even if Justified turns Justin Timberlake into a solo superstar, we have a feeling that the group won't be officially disbanding any time soon. Justin spoke to TeenPeople.com about some of the issues that have been weighing on his fans' minds:

On the fact that a lot of people are concerned about 'Nsync's future...
"I don't really understand [that]. If they're curious about what we're going to do, then I understand. [But] there's always going to be a group."

On other on-again, off-again groups, like Wu-Tang Clan, New Edition and the Rolling Stones, that 'Nsync want to compare themselves to...
"I don't see us as anything [like any other group]. I'm sorry - as far as I'm concerned, we're making our own rules. That's what we've always done. We never tried to be the Beatles. We never tried to be New Edition. We always just wanted to be us, and that's what we're doing."

On how the other members of 'Nsync feel about him embarking on his solo career...
"Everybody [in 'Nsync] is very supportive. As much as everyone wants to participate, they're going to. It's going to be cool."

On mistakes 'Nsync made before taking control of their career...
"There were just things that we were naïve about. Things that we were like, well, we don't know how to do this, so we can't do it. In every aspect. We depended on a business manager who double crossed us. We depended on producers to come in and tell us how to sound because we weren't exactly sure what we were doing. But then it got to the point where we learned more, and you sit in the studio and you're a sponge. You soak up everything, and you learn more and learn more, and you're like, 'I can do this.' And then you find out that what's been inside of you - you almost get pissed off at yourself, because you could have started doing that three years ago, and it's like, 'Why didn't?' Everything in life is a journey, and for me personally, every step that I've [taken] has led me to the music I write these days. So I don't think I'd give up anything. I don't think I'd change anything. It's cool, man. It's a cool place to be."

On 'Nsync's next album...
"We get all these questions - 'Is your new album going to sound like Celebrity? Is it going to be more R&B?' It could be whatever we want it to be. However we go into the studio, and whatever we're vibing - we could want to go on to some Ben Harper stuff. We could if we wanted to, and that's the beauty of having so many heads that have so many different influences, you know? You go in and make the music that you want to make that feels good to you, and hopefully people like it. I don't think there's any other way to be an artist."

Ms. Kelly Clarkson. I'm super happy for her. I'm bummed that Justin didn't win...I'm bummed that they both can't win...but I'm really happy for Kelly. Good for her!!!

Is it me or were the VMA's ultimately SUCKY last night!?!?

I'm going to jump right onto Axl Rose...okay...I was actually embarrassed for him last night. I used to be a big fan of their music. But why is everyone saying how "Awesome" he was last night (everyone being those MTV people)!?!?! He was horrible!! All those years of drinking and smoking really caught up with him. It was probably the most horrible performance I've ever heard!!! But no one is going to say so (on MTV) because G&R are a great band...but they have it wrong...they USED to be a great band. It's just not the same...no amount of pyros or whatever will make this band what it used to be. It was just awful. Sorry if I sound harsh, but being as big of a fan of the music as I was I am so horribly disappointed with that performance. It was sad. It was like watching the Anna Nicole show...you just couldn't believe it was even on television. Simon Cowell was probably cringing backstage!!!

Justin's performance...I just don't know what to think of it. I was looking for some great song with great vocals. It was good...it just wasn't as great as I was hoping it would be. My best friend always says, "Expect nothing, and you won't be disappointed." I think I just expected too much. But it's Justin...he's a major talent, and I just don't...well, in the words of Simon Cowell "Song selection is important." I'm interested in what the rest of his CD sounds like...then I will make a decision on whether or not I like his music. His performance wasn't bad...it was good. I love to hear him sing and his dancing was great. I was just expecting more.

Okay...what is it with Paula Abdul!?! Whoever wrote her script needs to be shot. It's not funny when she does the whole "touchdown" thing on AI and it wasn't funny here. I did like the fact that the judges looked like they were actually enjoying themselves and playing around with each other. That was good to see. I know a lot of people don't like Simon...but I do. And I liked watching him last night. I honestly would love to hear his true comments on the show last night. Kelly and Justin looked very comfortable and happy to be there. Good for them!

Avril Lavigne just lost a fan. I thought her music was great...I thought she was so cute, and talented. Now I'd just like to smack the girl. Seriously. What a snot!!!!

Eminem...I was happy to see him win what he did. I enjoyed his video, and I enjoy the song...and I think he did an okay performance. I'm not a fan of Eminem's but I was glad he won what he did. However, I do think Elton should have won best Male video. But that's just my opinion. As for his comment about Moby...it was a joke. Although I do think he shouldn't have threatened him! But I was happy he apologized later on that night, and said that he is in anger management classes (which is true, by the way). It was probably very hard for him to apologize in front of everyone.

Shakira...wow...great energy, great dancing...mediocre vocals. But she sure can put on a show. I thought her perfomance was fantastic!!!! She kicks butt!!!!

Britney...she looked like a dominatrix in her outfit, but girl is looking good!!! You go girl!!!

No Doubt...what the hell happened to them!?!?! No offense, I know a lot of people like their music. But where's the rock music? I understand musicians grow and change, but they are complete hip hop now!! I miss my rockers. And I don't think they should have won any video awards...the video wasn't really that great!!

Jimmy Fallon...Okay...he wasn't that bad. His Lance in Space thing had me laughing my arse off!! I thought he was okay. The beginning stuff cracked me up!!!! When he made fun of P!nk being drunk I laughed pretty hard, too.

Christina looked great...except for the pound of make-up on her face!! I didn't mind the outfit much...but well...the make-up was over the top. And I'm proud of both her and Eminem for being polite to the other.

The Hives...dude, you are not Mick Jagger. For real, people. Really awful performance. ALMOST as bad as G&R.

The Vines...great until the end. Um...is there a reason he had to play pissed off Rock Star??? Far better performance than the Hives. But then again I'm a Vines fan. I love MTV2!!

Lisa Marie...um...one question...WHY??

The TLC Tribute was beautiful...it's still a shock to me. It was done very tastefully.

Mayor...er...Former Mayor Rudy...I'm still a little choked up by that. It brings a tear to my eye...God bless, him...ya know!?!?

Sheryl Crow...never been a huge fan, but she did a beautiful tribute and sounded fantastic!! Perfect person to do that song. She's pure class.

P!nk...I love her. Seriously...she's just so real. She is who she is. I just love her individuality and her confidence and her talent. Good for her...and yeah...she's honest, too! "I'm too drunk..." hee hee hee.

David Lee Roth...again, WHY!?!!?

Mike Myers...I think he's so freaking funny. They should have him host the show next year!!

I LOVE DASHBOARD CONFESSIONAL!! Okay, just had to throw that in there!!

The Olson Twins...Anyone else feel old at the site of them??? Look at those two very beautiful girls!?!? Wow...they've grown up. *wipes a tear from my eye*

I thought Kelly Osbourne looked great as well!! I like her a lot. She's just damn cool!!

I'm glad Michelle Branch won the viewer's choice. She's talented, and well...I like her. :)

P!nk's performance was probably the best. In my opinion.

But all in all the performances were pretty boring, the show was pretty boring...I was just unimpressed. Next time I'll just tape it so I can fast forward through the boring stuff...which in this case would be a good 80% of the show.

These are just my opinions...please don't shoot me. Thanks.
