Not that anyone cares (so why do I?) but I did go back to watch "As You Were" and I think the question of Spike holding the eggs for a friend does not wash. When Buffy comes to see Spike to dump him after the eggs were destroyed, she says "And I'm not here to bust your chops about your stupid scheme either. That's just you. I should've remembered.". Spike makes no objection to this statement which I believe indicates that he is guilty as charged. As far as whether he knew whether they were dangerous - they were demon eggs - what did he expect to hatch, a bunch of floppy hoppy bunnies?
