Subject: The Spidey Responsibilities
In reply to: Sunshine 's message, "Re: Spidey" on 17:35:07 10/27/05 Thu

I'm just pointing out that for both sides of this spidey quote, those responsibilities exist already, to the degree they exist at all, in the same amount in the same way for all people, whether born poor or rich, with birth defects or with mutant super powers.

Does one choose to take those responsibilities upon oneself and use the power one does have, whatever that may be, in light of those responsibilities? Spidey does. Buffy does. The potentials in Buffy's living room do. Willow ultimately comes to that point in Chosen. I see no grounds on which to excuse off screen potentials from this just because they didn't get to choose their own reflexes or healing time. That's tantamount to "I didn't ask to be born!" which is true, and which I guess I have some sympathy for, but is still just a tantrum and the world is the same and the choices the same once the tirade is over. That's my only point.

Neither one's condition in life, nor the manner in which one comes to be aware of one's own power, has any effect on whether or not the "spidey responsibilities" exist. One either philosophically accepts that they do or rejects that they do. But I don't see how they can be contingent on one's genetics, breeding, class, social connections, sex, size, strength etc. The particular manifestation of one's choices will be contingent on such things, but the existence of the spidey responsibilities is either recognized to exist or not.

So I just think the off screen potentials should stop whining. My 9 month old whines quite enough for me.

Hey maybe that's it! The off screen potentials are going through separation anxiety. I figured it out.
