i'm sorry, jb.
i misspoke.
i certainly do not question the validity of what you've said you've seen. you've been in this business a very long time. i'm sure you've seen a lot.
nor do i question the validity of what ed has read. i do not have personal knowledge of what he has seen so i won't comment on it though i would imagine he has seen evidence he believes supports his claim.
i have seen AND read about demodex.
assurdedly not in the amount you, as a breeder has of course, but i'm not entirely ignorant on the subject.
my question more accurately should have been:
if new evidence were presented that was in direct opposition to your current belief, would you reconsider your position on the subject?
i ask because after speaking with my own vet, those he recommended at the university, those THEY recommended and some breeders of other dogs, the supporters of each theory seemed to be equally divided with a number switching sides at various points in time.
each had supporting evidence to base their conclusions on.
at base level, if demodex is a contagion, normal protocol of quarantine and treatment should be followed and (unless a breeder allows another exposure) there should be no further problems in any puppy in any litter.
if it is genetic, the dog should not be bred.
BUT....the question remains what new research will show.
lord knows, the human health field is rife with hitherto unheard of treatments for diseases that were fatal only 10 years ago. i see no difference in the animal health field.
i am a 'what if...?' sort of person.
because of that i am usually quite conservative and cautious.
it seems to me the best course of action would be one i was advised of many years ago and which combines both theories:
A) follow protocol to avoid/treat/eradicate the contagion and
B) not breed any dog (female OR male) that has a history of demodex in itself or in it's line.
in this way, there may be prevention of any occurances in all litters.
